I guess what i am saying is that either way degree or not, we are all screwed. how long do people think that the government will take care of you think? no more foodstamps, welfare, assistance nothing and then what can you do then. in reality we are all in debt

Borrowing money for education should be less difficult, especially with college graduates having such a hard time finding jobs after college. Some drastic reforms are needed. I was able to graduate from college with out having to take out a loan. However, I did get financial aid for the first two years that I was at a community college but after that I no longer qualified because my single mother went over the limit by two thousand dollars. But I was prepared for the worst so I started working part-time gravyard shifts and crazy hours. Saving all my nickels and dimes, picking up cans and then it all adds up to getting a degree from college. I don't regret going.

You forgot advise #4: STAY AWAY FROM SALLIE MAE!! They will rip you off! The are inept keeping their accounts, they add interest, fees, and penalties and rack up your loan four, five times.They get their money from the government plus interest if you default and then collect on you with their agencies, GRC, Pioneer, Arrow. So, its to their interest that you default, they get their money and also collect from you. Their collectors dont even need a GED and are rude. STAY AWAY FROM SALLIE MAE!

It is interesting how, in order to make money a person must borrow money. This doesn't make much sense. By the time a person finishes college, he or she comes out in debt, where jobs don't pay enough to pay off the debt, because most jobs are struggling financially themselves to afford to pay people anything to make some kind of a profit.

If you want to go to college, #1. Know why you want to go: what do you want to do after college? #2. Is college going to give you marketable skills to get a good job? If you major in women's studies, you are a fool because no one hires for that. If you need that to get into law school or poly sci, make that a minor subject. #3. Forget this video - I'm going to give you the best possible advice right now - do not EVER get a student loan. Need to go College? Work and save up. its simple really colleges are a big rip off unless financial aid covers for it don't go and never take out "loans". they just scam people and make a living off of you while you pay off those "loans" on hidden interest rates. @swinggcat1 I disagree. There are some schools that are VERY affordable. If you're not a baller, try looking at an affordable school instead of trying to go to Northwestern. Harris Stowe State University, for instance, costs 1,500 dollars a semester. Go to a small state school where you can get a part time jobs. College of the Ozarks in Missouri is FREE, because they have a heavy federal work study program. instead of downing college, find an economical way to get the degree.

I took out loans and today paying back loans to the government is like paying back the mafia. If you don`t have a job or the money to pay, they will take it our of your paycheck when you do work and take your income tax return money and then after years of paying them through garnishments, they can and will sell your loans to a finance company for 24 percent interest wheither you like it or not. They won`t even tell you before they sell them. All the U.S. is about is MONEY

Yeah--I have a degree in accounting that I haven't used for anything.  I mostly lost interest in the subject after I graduated and had some office jobs that I HATED. I'm just glad that I went to a school that was cheap at the time. Today's 20-somethings are a "lost generation" with big student loan debt and few jobs out there waiting for them. I thought they were more "street smart" than that. Instead they were scammed into going to college and wasting all that money.

You are an accountant, and I got my degree in Business Administration. I worked as a night security guard banking all my money in BMO Monthly Income Fund getting 6 cents per 8.15 unit. and did my homework getting paid for what I had to do anyways. I graduated with 10,000 in my bank account, and 2 years later, I have 63,000 in my BMO Monthly Income Fund. As of rent, I became a Resident Advisor, which included free housing as part of benefits. I did not get parental handout and did it alone.

Those adds can be misleading... Please don't borrow $40,000 a year for college! If you borrow that much you will be in well over 100K of debt when they hand you your diploma.

The last 3 tips are the great. The most important one though is number 2... don't over borrow! Borrow what you need to live your life and that's it - it will only hurt you later.

Going to college is not worth creating debt with an unmerciful government. Sometimes, health issues and certain mental and physical disabilities prevent a person from making enough money to barely survive on, but the government will still take their money. You can not take bankruptcy. You are trapped permenantly. There is no mercy! No forgiveness of debt. Don't be fooled. A job is not promised at the end of your education. Education doesn't always mean prosperity.

Words of wisdom. I'm an honor student with a a large scholarship. I work and make little to nothing. I came from community college paid practically nothing and obtained a better education than the one I am receiving now. LOL. After college I will have $20,000 in grant and bank loans. Private colleges should fail like the banks. Or, at least go back to what they used to mainly be, country clubs for the wealthy. They are obsolete and a racket.

You won't have to worry about it. Right now, this very minute, there are IOUs in the cumulative social security fund box. It was put there by the government. Let's see, the government owes itself for spending our social security accumulation. Now the government is running the Social Security Program like a Ponzi scheme. By the time the last baby boomer retires, this Ponzi scheme will be bust. So they can't take what they don't have--BECAUSE THEY ALREADY TOOK IT!

@MrFaisel34 there is a misconception about social security. The money you pay now goes to those who recieve SS. The money does not go to you as a saving however, but you do have an imaginary balance. That is paid by the generation after you. Its a neverending cycle. Parents pay grandparants SS. Children pay their parents SS. And so on. Im not stating absolute fact, i dont know if my statement is 100% true, if not tell me.

You are correct. "The money you pay in SS taxes does go to those who receive SS." Now that money is paid by the current generation to the current recipients. Soon, the money collected from the the SS taxpayers wont be enough to cover all the baby boomers retiring. The government has been tapping into the SS pot for a long time. They have also been tapping into USPS profits. Do you really think the post office is going broke because everyone is now sending e-mails?

All the taxes our goverment collects from us only covers 58% of goverment expenses. here in nyc, we have a budget deficit with taxes at an all time high, at 9% and growing. Highest in the country :) But our city buses are being cut, nypd police officers only make 25k a year, and fdny stations are being closed down by the city. Not to mention our teachers. Only an idiot couldnt figure out there is a problem here...

fuck this bullshit, if you cant afford it dont buy it. Take a year off and live with your parents and dont fucking go to parties dont do anything other than working 2 jobs straight. And youll be straight for college. unless your going to medical school, but for most ppl youll be straight. If your parents force to you pay bills monthly youll save around maybe 15-20k. When you get that, go to a community college then a 4 year one and you good to go.
