@RJMusicology WOW..she is definitely not a whore, the industry heads may be whores and they are the ones who make these decisions, what a sad old bitter man!! also people today love the newer stuff and the more r&b side of Sade, barring SMOOTH OPERATOR and SWEETEST TABOO..obv big fans like me love everything, but ive noticed...at the o2 arena last month most ppl were excited for by ur side, no ordinary love, kiss of life, king of sorrow...u know what I mean? this man is just nasty and bitter
@RJMusicology The saddest bit is that this person is spreading this sort of hate on her all videos...there's a lot after promise and diamond life...most of my real favorites happened afterwards and most of America identifies with Love Deluxe, Lovers Rock & Soldier of Love. Obviously SMOOTH OPERATOR was the big hit of the 80s...but then the hits afterwards made their own mark too!! By your side! CHERISH THE DAY! NO ORDINARY LOVE!! PARADISE!! come on!
I think when artists get as famous as Sade or Mariah Carey or Michael Jackson...everybody and their grandmom think they were a part of their success..let it go, this happened 28 yrs ago lol..I wasnt even born lol
I agree Jeff with Ray St John - Sade would not have been famous:) Smooth Operator is still the biggest and best know Sade hit to date along with the first album Diamond Life. We did invite Ray to join the band when we split with Pride but got rid of him as he didnt look right as we had the iamge of the three latin boys in the band with black jumpers:) What happened after that was that they then added every ugly session player in town and blew it. Sade was signed on image and on that hit song....
@PaulCookeMusic I think Your Love is King, The Sweetest Taboo and along with Smooth Operator is Sade's biggest known hits. I'm always watching Sade's live concert videos, and those songs seem to get the biggest audience reaction, well that's partly true... a lot of their songs get big reactions. I read that Diamond Life and Promise sold 15 million copies. And Love Deluxe or The Best of Sade sold 12 million (can't remember which). Sade's not only famous for Diamond Life and Smooth Operator.
The song Smooth Operator that Helen Adu didnt write:) This song was written by Ray St John the guitarist from Pride, he created the original lyric, song melody and music. Ray your a genius mate and you got ripped off by a Smooth Operator:(
@PaulCookeMusic : What became of Ray ST John ? what is he doing actually ? Anyway i hope you'll get what you and he deserve. This song is one of the best pop song of all time and is still the one associated with Sade the group (its signature song). Without it, Sade would not have had any career i think.
Ok I'm not sure I understand what's happened here. Your song, Smooth Operator aka Diamond Life was not credited to you..Is Ms.ADU, who claimed 50% credit, SADE? If she isn't SADE, does SADE know you got ripped off? Smooth Operator was one of her biggest hits and you keep battling to get what's yours!!!!
@PaulCookeMusic Let me tell you something paul. God dont like ugly so if she did that....Damn....Thats a very foul pratice on her part. Money is the root of all evil...I cant Sade could be soo ruthless paul. Thats sad....
@jeffbeck70 Suprised the hell out of me as well? I still have the original lyric sheet he wrote and we worked off in my loft:) The song was called Diamond Life to start with. Sade called her first album DL:)
This was the first ever recording we made of Smooth Operator in the studio, we got a demo session with EMI Publishing and went into their studio to put this song down. It doesnt differ from the track that Robin Millar produced and I think we did a better job:) It more or less remained the same and this Pride song by Ray St John is what made Sade what she was in 1984........
Shame !!!! What does St.John say about all this?

Don't know about the legality, but clearly dubious morality and the rhythm section definitely define this song.

jeffbeck70 2 years ago
@jeffbeck70 Not really Jeff, 1st copyright established by EMI yes, but no deal signed at the time?
PaulCookeMusic 1 year ago
Absolutley, that was the whole problem the singer signed a solo deal so got all the power:( Way of the world I am afraid.

@Paul: How could Ray St John accept cowriting credits if he did write Chords AND lyrics ?
Have you talked to him about this since ?
What's his position ? For the others, maybe the deal was: you all stay in the band but shut up ?
