  • I love it ...go sax

  • The drums at the end is goddamn cool!

  • 1:22 that bassist is god

  • look at the drummer at 2:54 I love how his head stays perfectly still and he keeps smiling the same. Looks so natural to him. I love basie.

  • Don Byas on tenor. Almost dead on Lester for the solo.

  • Gotta love basie :]

  • this reminds me of tom and jerry Lool

  • @ilovefood416

    .

Tom and Jerry got their start in 1940. They used then-contemporary music for the cartoons and that's why this music, recorded in the same style and at the same time, makes you think of T & J.

  • I'm glad this is still out there xD its hard to come by awesome swing jazz nowadays.

  • Lo conocia de hace tiempo pero no todos los temas, este muy bueno como todos supongo lo recomiendo.

  • this guy is fucking amazing!

  • Big band/swing jazz is just...awesome.

  • Wow the great Count Basie Band FANTASTIC!!!!

  • me hubiera encantado vivir esa epoca

  • yeah buena musica :)

  • i love this so much. big band is definitely a favorite :)

  • I like count basie because all the songs he did had a very unique feel.

  • Chik's band.

  • Classic big band jazz here.

  • maaaan, i wish i were right there

  • I love how Jones on drums does not move his body at all while playing. And with that permanent smile he looks like a puppet playing those drums... XD

  • I would never have seen this without the Internet. It is wonderful I can catch up on all those great bands from the late 30s and early 40s. Life could not be better

  • which is then genre that is more down-tempo one? (: please answer, thank you.

  • @thiskidgotmoves - Hi, glad you liked the video. I'm not sure if I understand your question, but the genre of both of these songs is Big Band Swing. The first one is medium tempo, and the second one is fast tempo.

  • @that1940sguy i'm talking louis armstrong tempo, sloooowww (: minus the vocals, like this, except, sllloooowwww :O

  • @thiskidgotmoves

You may be thinking of the genre Blues. Very slow and low some if you are looking for that.

Try Nina Simone - Do I Move You :)

  • @thiskidgotmoves I'm not quite sure I understand your question either, but if you're talking about the type of jazz with slow tempo, it's cool jazz.

  • oh yeah that's magnifico!

  • The next person who gives their age in their comment gets a slap.

  • Nice I saw this in school today

  • I refuse to listen to today's shit. It wouldn't be half bad if there were some actual talent there, but there just isn't. Between auto-tune and today's extremely simple melodies, there is literally nothing to admire about most modern music. People like Rebecca Black are actually allowed to live. Its a shame . . .

  • @rickricardo94 lol i don't mind them living, it's not their fault they're talentless, it's media's fault - they rape people's ears with that kind of stuff and destroy all possibilities of developing an actual taste. As Miles said "Life is all about taste". That's why i don't watch tv/listen to radio. I find new music through internet, thank you youtube.

  • Black people made music what it is today!

  • im 21 and love the fact that this music is about the music and the talent of the people that play it ... todays rap and hip-hop and pop music lacks the feeling that these groups have...

  • i'm 13 and i seem to be the only one left of my age who loves and respects this music

  • @MrBumba456 I respect that.

  • @MrBumba456 not alone man im 17 but i love this stuff!

  • @scuba323 Yeah, it's really legend and amazing stuff!

  • @GreenCertains true is this statement! .... yoda ftw .. lol

  • beastin it up with his hat. i wish i was alive during these times. just to be able to hear great music like this.

  • I'm 15 as well, and love big band and swing jazz too, and pretty much anything from the 30's- 40's like the Andrews Sisters and others, and my mom always says I was born in the wrong era!

  • i am just beginning to become a swing and a jazz fan but damn why didnt i discover this high quality music before better than these days music ( i am a young guy)

  • Amazing! The greatest swing band this planet has ever seen!

  • greatest swing band ever. Hands down. The Duke had the greatest jazz big band of all time, but this is the greatest of the pure swing bands. Nobody could touch 'em.

  • ah yes i remember the time when music was made by real music and real musicians and not computers run by part tie tech support people. but then again, i wasn't even born during those times.

  • @AirMover49 Hey there are some musicians that combine tech and real instruments that make beautiful music. If you have the time just search for an artist named nujabes. You will not be disappointed, I promise you this

  • wow, thx for the vid that1940sguy! this music is just so great! notice i said is, not was, because its so good that its still around! the crappy rap and pop of today won't last decades like big band/swing/jazz has. im 15, so my generation doesnt appreciate this music for what it is. im also a drummer, and i love playing swing. ive always loved this kind of music, but i havent seen many videos. youve got me hooked tho. keep it up!

  • @montana6426 - Glad you like swing jazz. You're not alone, checkout website thefedoralounge dawt cawm (have to misspell it because youtube tries to block the correct spelling because they dont want anyone to ever visit any other websites in the world other than youtube) - Folks of all ages are on thefedoralounge including teenage who like vintage 1930s-40s-50 stuff including music and movies.

  • @that1940sguy thx! i'll check it out.

  • @montana6426 Hey I'm 17 and I love this kind of music, and I know there are more than just us 2. This is one of the genres of music that inspires me to make music.

  • @SleepingGiants1 ya man! what do you play?

  • @montana6426 I started with the trumpet and branched out to the piano, those two are pretty much my favorite after growing up listening to like jazz, swing, and just a bunch of other genres that were heavily based around those

  • @SleepingGiants1 sweet. ya, i played trumpet for my 3 years of middle school. i got tired of it though because my music teacher gave us boring music, and my dad made me practice a lot, so those two coupled together made it extremely boring.

  • Comment removed

  • @montana6426 amen

  • @montana6426 im your age. i love big band/jazz/swing too. but, im a trombonist...in fact, i love this so much that i go to listen to jazz every saturday

  • " Dios Bendiga tu Alma "

    Gracias Basie.

    21/08/1904 - 28/07/2011.

  • OMG! that was totally WICKED!!! I wish I can play like the trumpet solo guy! hahaha :p

  • Nice swing to it

  • DON BYAS...

  • O que mais me chama a atenção, é que todos os músicos não tem uma estante com partitura, e improvisão muito. Parabéns.

  • it's like Tom & Jerry soundtrack

  • Great Basie footage! Man could that band swing. Every current horn player should view this video to "freshen up" that old time swing phrasing, that is sometimes lost today. Thanks for sharing. JT.

  • i think that1940sguy is....crazy

  • this is REAL music!!

  • This is what we call REAL MUSIC I LOVE IT.

  • what a great big band. but I prefer Glenn Miller and his orchestra, the best swing big band ever! :)

  • @edwardconway27 - Glad you liked the vid! - Hmmmm, Best Swing Band Ever... that's a TOUGH one, there's just so many different styles, to fit so many different moods. Miller's and Basie's were definitely representative of the era... but as far as All-Around Best, wow.... I think I'd have to go with Duke Ellington's 1940-42 band, which included Ben Webster on tenor. (Of course, that band was So Much More than just a Swing Band, that's almost an unfair answer...)

  • @that1940sguy I also like Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Harry James, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington and many big bands, but I really adore Mr. Miller. I think I was born in a wrong era, why I was born in 1989? *sigh lol thanks for sharing a beautiful music from the greatest era! -Edward

  • @edwardconway27

Love me some Miller, but Glenn's band never swung as hard as this band.

  • @edwardconway27 Count basie band was clearly better than glenn millers

  • @BlacknesUnforgivable haha sorry I still prefer Major Miller and his greatest big band!

  • @edwardconway27 Nope when it comes to swinging , nobody tops count basie

duke ellingtons band was also better than millers

  • @BlacknesUnforgivable whatever you said Mr, its all about taste :)

  • @edwardconway27

Arty Shaw said that Glenn Millers band was too "safe". They were never pushed to take musical chances. I like Glenn Miller, but I like the Count swinging the blues from KC and The Duke more.

  • ooooooooooh hat mutes gotta try dat

  • Blow Daddy Blow

  • It's Buck Clayton on trumpet later on, at "Swingin' The Blues". Notice the ever smiling 'Papa' Jo Jones on drums. Wonderful!

  • @KaRidder234 - Sure is Buck in "Swingin" - thanks, updated description.

  • I heard Don Byas in 1946 on the French Riviera - but I was too young to appreciate him. His tone and approach are obviously Hawkins-ish but, on his extended solos in small groups, you can hear original and quite complex lines.

  • @usefulmusic - LUCKY!!! I was born in the wrong era.. but DID get to hear Cab, and got his autograph, during one of his last performances, less than a year before he died. Sure wish I could've heard more of the greats of The Era Of Style, in person...

  • Simply fantastic to watch! thanks for posting

  • you can "count" on basie. what an ensamble here. thank you so much for the treat tom d brick,nj.

  • 8 people are not swinging the blues...

  • Yes. Glad to see there are other minors who appreciate this incredible genre. I'd like to see a comeback.

  • Eight people are hearing impaired.

  • @flamadiddle86

    .

Eight people who are deafer than a dead dodo...

  • THIS IS GOOD STUFF "HEAR"!!!!!!

  • i am 15 and i LOVE this music. for a talent show my BF and i are going to do a swing dance number to this song! we are having soooooo much fun! thx for the vid!

  • great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • true music

  • Shit, I want to learn how to play my trumpet with a god damn hat :D

  • My sympathies, dcentral; I'm a 50-something trombonist who spent about two years touring with ROOMFUL OF BLUES; that's a band which defied the economic odds for many years and brought to many modern audiences (beginning in 1970) some of the best jump blues since the original stuff in the '40's. They're still together, but the economy is such that fielding a band of that size (10 when I was in it, 7 now) is nearly impossible.

  • @Friendoffreedom

Love ROOMFUL OF BLUES; sad about the economic difficulties. That's cool that you played with them.

  • @that1940sguy

Thanks for the reply. If you get a chance, check out their latest release, "Hook, Line & Sinker." It's killer, and their new singer and trumpet player are both world class-really nice guys, too.

  • Yeah but... whose gonna be jivin' to Lady Gaga and all that crap in 80 years from now? NOBODY that's who. These guys are immortals.

  • Hmmm I love a large variety of music, but this is at the top :)

  • im only 14 and i live off the music

  • I'm 18, but I could jam to this song all day! Can't beat that swing jazz.

  • it's just preferences...

we like this kind of music, other people like another kind

  • Comment removed

  • @lauralockie very well said. there is a lot of cultural/musical nostalgia that has been created. times were shit then, times are shit now. theres not a whole lot thats changed. take away all the fancy electronic crap and the massive commercialism, and you're left with the same fucked up shit.

  • much better then that Mtv crap.

  • im only 20 but i love this music

  • Don Byas... I have no words for how much of a bad mother f***** that dude is... Oh, and the whole freaking band obviously xD

  • I'm 2 years old and i've been listening to jazz since i was a sperm.

    Get serious, people.

  • @protsimer That's seriously the funniest thing I've heard all day

  • @protsimer I'm an infant in the womb and I've been a modal jazzer since I was conceived.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeahhh

  • I'm 15 and i'm totally into jazz, not in that crap the today's radio's vomit all the time.

  • I'm 19 and I've been loving swing since I was 13 or 14. I'm a hugeee fan of of jazz music.

  • Most of my swing band's fans are under 30 and over 70.

  • Im 13 and i love swing jazz way more that todays pop! Your not the only one!!!!!!!!

  • I'm 31. I love punk, soul, blues, etc... but THIS is the GREATEST thing I have EVER heard. EVER EVER EVER!!!! Holy holy sh*t!!! For anyone thinking this is just a "good" swing band is mistaken. This qualified, untestified, number 1 swinging JAZZ!

  • Im 11 I love swing, blues, gosple and rock 'n' roll

  • Be careful, dcentral what you wish for!

I discovered hot jazz in the mid sixties and am still a big fan. But then, we also enjoyedf Mahler's 4th last week at the Sydney Opera House!

And we love Indie music too.

  • this is a true hot band, although i have to admit i dont mind glenn miller. lol

  • I hope I'm not the only 20 something that loves Swing Jazz and hates today's pop crap music! Why can't we revive swing and big bands again? Today's jazz world is somewhat stale and boring. I wish I lived in the 30s. :(

  • @dcentral

Hey there are LOTS of 20somethings, 30somethings, and even some kids, who LOVE the swing era . Checkout this site where lots of em (including me) hang out & even sometimes arrange meet-ups: thefedoralounge (dott) com

  • @that1940sguy I'm a freshmen is Highschool and I can't get enough of Big Band music. Its just an awesome genre.

  • @that1940sguy

That is quite true. im a huge fan of all forms of jazz and im 17. I can't stand todays pop music but I do credit

    jazz musicians today aswell,

  • @dcentral dude im 22.. and i totally love jazz.. tho my primary music style is rock and metal.. i absolutely love jazz.. also best drummers in my book are jazzers..

i mean the improvisation jazzers do is just amazing.. true player is not the one who can play someones music.. its the one who can create new music that is amazing..

and improvising great music is what every jazzer can do.. thats what i like in jazz.:)

  • @dcentral

You're not. I'm 17 and I love this stuff. We played swingin' the blues in our school's honors jazz band.

  • @dcentral

i like swing jazz and studying A levels :)

  • @dcentral Hey, I am 19 an I love this kind of music! It makes me feel good and makes me calm down to think about many things. As you can see, you are not alone ;)

  • @dcentral yeah you're not alone

  • @dcentral

You're not the only one. I'm 24, grew up in the city and never really gave into the mainstream music. Don't like pop, hip-hop, rap, etc but I love hard rock, metal, and swing jazz!

  • @scryedzxp Same here, man. Great tastes, you have, in my opinion. :)

  • @dcentral I'm 16 and i LOVE this era and also wish i lived in it :( You are not alone haha :)

  • @dcentral yeah

im 14 and I listen to metal and jazz and the fusion of that

pop crap and its variations are horrible

  • @dcentral no not at all me and my partner love it and want it at our wedding and i'm 23

  • @dcentral agree

  • @dcentral

You must be musically deaf if you think that today's jazz world is stale or boring, you really need to start listening to some guys like chris potter, kenny garrett, maceo, mark turner, even michael brecker...in no way is any of their music stale...i mean commmee oonnn

  • @ironcross427 it's an opinion, so I guess you can't expect everyone to agree, but I also find today's jazz

stale and boring. A lot of times it's very spacey, ambiant, or if not, then it is very self-indulgent.

  • @johnsurs22 check out john zorn and his band naked city

  • @AtheistAnarchoRudi I checked it out- thanks- it was pretty good, but it was closer to

funk/rock which I tend to like anyways. It wasn't what I was referring to when I said modern

    jazz.

  • @dcentral

When I was in my 20's, I too thought I was the only 20-something who loved this music. Boy, was I wrong! I think music like this is timeless and will always have folks like us toe-tapping long after the folks who made the music are gone.

  • @dcentral i love this music so much

  • @dcentral no ur not the only 20 something :)

  • @dcentral Don't worry, we might seem to be few, but we still exist. =)

I'm 18 and I just love swing and bepop. ^.^

  • @dcentral AMEN!!!

  • @dcentral who stops you from reviving swing and big bands? there are plenty of possibilities, the problem´s that they aren´t used too often. and the jazz world now is definitely not boring ;)

    best greetz from germany.

  • @dcentral hey im 15 and i love jazz and soul music!!! i wish we could get all those artist back that would be nice♥

  • @dcentral

Well, I'm 30 something. But I loved Jazz/Big band in my 20's. I've liked Ska since my early teens. But not sure which came first, Ska to Jazz or Jazz to Ska.

  • @dcentral hahah im 16 and i LOVE swing jazz, youre not the only one =)

  • Long live Belgium for the birth of the sax! =)

  • awesum. ive neva thought of mutin my trumpet with a hat before. ive used bottles but they change the pitch. ima i try that now.

  • fuck today's music

  • I only started hearing this 5 mins ago and i already think its awesome:)

  • I love playing this in jazz class

  • The thing anout swing is ... You gotta make it Swing!!!

  • @PUreMonKz It dont mean a thing if it aint got THAT SWING

  • @DeadbrainLives lma the swing boys

  • Breathtaking. Words can't convey the brilliance of this band. Made my day seeing it!

  • the best of the best.

  • This is where my best sampling comes from.

  • Cool! Thanks man for this!

  • I have to admit I never really enjoyed Count Basie's band (as much others)

that is until I heard this

  • I think I could probably get into jazz...... can somebody suggest some more good musicians for me.

  • @IrishAmerican1234 - Cool, one place you can hear more is to click on my username to go to my youtube channel page, then scroll down & on the left under "profile" are some links to artists to Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, more Basie, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington... other favorite swing-era jazz artists of mine include Jimmie Lunceford, of course Louis Armstrong, Artie Shaw, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Ventura, Lester Young, Charlie Barnet...

  • @that1940sguy Thanks! =)

  • @that1940sguy George shearing is good to! :)

  • @that1940sguy don't forget about Ben webser, Jhonny Hodges, Charles Mingus and Jhon Coltrain

  • @that1940sguy Check Basie Boogie on this list. This features Wardell Gray on tenor sax. Then check Gene Norman,s Just Jazz. Look for "Groovin, High" This features Wardell Gray at length and is mt favourite tenor solo. Also Howard McGhee and Sonny Criss feature on this one.

  • @Lennitriss

YEAH, man 2 of my alltime favorite tenor players are Wardell Gray and Dexter Gordon! They were SO similar in their styles back in the early days, before Grey died; such a tragic loss; Can only IMAGINE how great he might have sounded when he got to be as "Seasoned" as Dexter Gordon was when Gordon made those INCREDIBLE Blue Note 1960's albums (my All Time Favorite hard-bop albums by any artist!). Gray also played w/ Benny Goodman a short time somewhere around 1950.

  • @IrishAmerican1234

Duke Ellington for swing, Jelly Roll Morton for classic, Miles Davis for Modern Jazz and Fusion, John Coltraine, and then there are the latin Jazz guys like Mongo Santa Maria and Poncho Sanchez.

take your pick it is a huge genre with lots of styles to choose.

  • @IrishAmerican1234 Go to swinginkatz YT

  • @IrishAmerican1234 Also chech out Ken Burns JAZZ. The PBS documentary is excellent and is on DVD.

  • @gjohnsoningary

Yes, agreed: For anyone wanting to learn more about this & other styles of jazz & swing, the Ken Burns "JAZZ" documentary DVD set is Awesome - and it's available to rent, through Netflix.

  • @that1940sguy Also, some good stuff is John Coltrane and Dave Brubeck. Find their jazz casual stuff. Not quite swing, but might just make a jazz lover out of you. Cab Calloway is also awesome. You may have heard his song Minnie the Moocher. Great stuff.

  • That's a VERY shiny piano.

    Great Music Btw.

  • I love showing racist people this stuff, because it is so absolutely fantastic

  • I love how the Count plays the first four notes of Byas's solo along with Byas, super.

And Jo Jones is the man!!! He makes it look soooooo easy and he's so relaxed. And you can't top his smile, can you?

  • @Disques13Swing

    Indeed!

  • @Disques13Swing Yeah, those four notes are the same ones Lester Young played on the original recording of "Swingin' the Blues". Don Byas replaced Prez when the latter joined the army, so he's clearly paying homage to his predecessor. Long live swing music !

  • @tadd1

    Thanks for the info!

  • i need some shit like this, can i get some suggestions?
