I was at Woodstock in 1969. Met a few of the signers also. Janis, Jimi, Stephen, David Crosby, Country Joe McDonald, and a few more besides Richie. The best concert in the history. of Mankind.
I think Neil Young took advantage of them. They should have not let him into the band. The Managers pushed that. I love Neil's songs with the band, Neil tried to kick Stephen out of the band and forced drummer Dallas Taylor out, I think he envied/had a grudge on Stephen and manipulated the situation to come out on top, which he did. It's all in Neil Young's authorized biography "Shakey".I believe without Y, CSN would have put out more records. No reason to disrespect nobody folks.
@AstorreHerrera kind of agree, i personally don't think he added that much to the band. i also hate how it's just sometimes Y. make up your damn mind.
@ejectorerector Haha Yeah, but that's the way it came down. It's amazing the way this music and the history of the musicians has such a hold on fans. cheers.
@smauk78 you are obviously a deaf and stupid jack ass. neil young is one of the most talented musicians of the twentieth century. he didn't fry his brains out either, he's continued to make wonderful music for 40+ years. he didn't just burn out after five years. talent is when you sound beautiful on record and even more incredible live, which neil young has done his entire music career. neil young is fucking amazing, the end.
They got together as a trio after things clicked so well at a party Mama Cass threw. Looking for another guitar, they tried to avoid asking Neil since he and Stephen often fought. That's one thing that ended Buffalo Sprinfield. Hard to say who's at fault. Dave Mason, John Sebastian and a few others turned it down, so Neil came in by default. The attitude later was that Young was always welcome, but didn't always want to join them. He had other projects he wanted to do...and did them.
i had the privilege of seeing buffalo springfield last month, it was the greatest show ive ever seen. Stills is so talented, i think hes a little underrated.
neil was there, can totally hear his guitar. arg ! not only was it 42 years ago,and i'm sure the hash was good, but when buffalo springfield brings along david crosby, graham nash ! neil is hiding behind the lights. 3:24 you can plainly see neil.so i'm almost sure that you really were'nt there. i was there.

@beroth77 you dont know shit. neil young added so much to the band. they were at their best with him. he provided some edge. deja vu was the best music any of them ever took part in. neil young was responsible for a large portion of that. fuck yourself
@amnesiac65 Man you gotta cool your jets. Take a look at the first Crosby, Stills and Nash album, it was absolutely amazing and in my opinion just edges deja vu. Don't get me wrong, Neil is amazing and so was deja vu. Neil is better than any of the other three on his own but as a group crosby stills and nash are better than neil and better off without him.
@amnesiac65 Neil Young actually didnt play on that many songs on "Deja Vu". Much like the first CSN album, Stephen Stills played most instruments except drums. The best song on the album, "Carry On" he played every instrument except the drums. No NY on that one and a few others.
@karmices I have respect for you sir, because you appear to be knowledgeable about the subject, unlike alot of these fools. However, I believe you are incorrect when you say Neil Young didn't play on that many songs on Deja Vu. He didn't WRITE alot of the songs. He wrote 3 songs on the album, which were almost cut my hair, woodstock, and helpless. But I do believe that during the recording of the album, Neil PLAYED on every song, stills WROTE most of the lyrics and music. they recorded as a band
@amnesiac65 Neil Young did not write "Almost Cut My Hair" Crosby did, nor did he write "Woodstock" Joni Mitchell did. Young wrote "Helpless", "Country Girl" and co worte with Stills "Everybody I Love You" Of course Young played on the songs he wrote, but he is not on "Carry On" (the best song on the album) "Deja Vu" "Our House" "Teach Your Children" and "4+20"
@amnesiac65 how are you guys going to argue about a man that fried his brains out and really didnt contribute anything that the group didnt have before or after him. young was a total lack of options and wasnt a big loss after he was gone.
@smauk78 crazy Neil young is Amazing and they all did drugs back then You Don't know what your talking about ! Just enjoy good music that is what is about now !

never mind the crummy sound. It's a feed from the monitors most likely and you must remember this was before digital...way before. The music was even new to them at this performance. This group ushered in the 70's as we who were old enough remember it being. A "summer of love" baby.

@julyarchives dear Jimmy, the trio only sounds out of tune here because of the deterioration of the videotape in this particular upload. If you listen to their commercial recordings (or better yet, to them live, in concert today) you will hear they can sing perfectly in tune.
I'll bet Stephen cringes with chagrin when he hears this version of 'Long Time Gone' now. And if not, he should, 'cause his improv here is horrible. That being said, CSNY is one of the greatest bands of all time, and in no small part due to Stills; but it was absolutely a group effort.

Yeah and Neil Young makes a lot of dumb career moves. Anyway, I am not saying CS&N r not very talented just that Neil is a dangerbird soaring higher and yeah Neil from 1980 2 today has only done a dozen great songs. Look I just tell it how I feel it.This is not a love feast I just don't lie on Utube as I do in life.
The greatest talent in the whole music business is Neil Young. From 1966 to 1978 he wrote a hundred great songs that most of you don't know when you are hopelessly helpless lost on the Marrakesh Express. Mr Soul, Expecting to Fly, Winterlong, I've been waiting for you, Needle and the Damage Done, Powderfinger, Cortez the Killer,Old Man, onights the Night, Birds

I thought i'd seen or listened to everything from Woodstock , CSN& Y... but This is a new one on me.....Thanks ol' buddy..ha ha ha ....I really wonder where you got this....it is appreciated......
After Stills' quip about helicopters, Graham just about loses it... some CSN fans know that in the process of getting to Woodstock, Nashie's helicopter almost crashed. This marvellous cat has nine lives, he's accident prone and his guardian angel works overtime.
Young didn't consider himself 'apart' of the group yet. This was only like their second gig as the foursome. It was still CSN in theory at that point.
cos he didn't think the cameras should've been there to commercialize the event. he threatened to swing his guitar at anyone who aimed a movie camera in his direction.
they didn't even perform ohio.ohio wasn't even written by neil young yet. the shooting at kent state ohio were not until may 1970. this is 1969. to bad they didn't play it though.
Sounds like you are fomous in our own mind BFD Alot of famous people act like idiots and love attention to satisfy some inate defficiency in their being. To even mention you might be famous personifies that aforementioned deficiency. Charlie Manson is famous as is Hitler. Get a life probvably too late for that.
In Neil Youngs autobiography 'Shakey' he says that despite being there on stage with CSN he wanted no part of the film and in his own words,'Threatened to hit the cameraman over the head with his guitar if he pointed it anywhere near him'
Your doubt sure is not knowledge, and why on earth would someone be turned on other than for the neatness of the truth. Your derision ought to be accompanied by research. I heard the pick-up truck story repeated again on the recent anniversary looking back at Woodstock. Neil Young tells it in many of his interviews. So, what's your point?
I expressed my opinion, didn't state anything about research. For that matter, neither did you. How would YOU know something like that? Also, there wasn't any derision included in my comment, merely an opinion. I know Neil Young and I've never heard him tell that "story". What's YOUR point?
Simple point: Neil Young tells that story, maybe not to you, but to any interviewer who might care to ask. I believe Elliot also repeats it in an interview. The story starts out like this: Neil Young and Jimi Hendrix arrived for the Woodstock festival in 1969 in a helicopter. They soon discovered, however, that the helicopter pad was several ...
BTW, when someone adds "whatever" and "turns you on" to the end of a sentence, I think it is derision. Maybe like this story, you just don't know.
what name-dropping? This is a vid which engendered a discussion about Neil Young, I used to know him, so what? since i was in the music biz for a lot of years, i knew a lot of musicians. some were my friends. is it "name-dropping" to name someone who is a friend simply because they're famous? maybe i am too.
In fact, if you listen to the intro in the film Chip Monk says "Please welcome warmly Crosby, Stills, Nash" and there is a brief moment of silence where Young's name is edited out. However, if you get any of the soundtrack recordings the full intro is on there.
Neil WAS with them in '69, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, first show was apparently the 17th of August in Chicago, then Woodstock directly after. Or that's what Wiki tells me anyway. He just didn't want to get filmed I guess, threatened some cameramen according to Wiki again..
You can't pretend that's not Neil's guitar in there, no one else sounds like him.
@notaphaser Except Stills, when the two are mixing it up or when he's playing the lead on a Neil song if they perform live and Neil wants to focus on singing. You see it with both BS and CSNY. They're different players, but it's funny that Stills adopts a Neil "accent" on guitar sometimes.
I think he's pretty much there...at the end...not arguing 'cause maybe he didn't give the rights...but the second lead is Neil and at the end of the video...it's Neil
he he and i was watching Woodstock Directors cut at the weekend with partner and i was sure Neil wasn't there, i even argued the point, oh well, wrongo me o. Peace y'all! Huge Neil and CSN fan here. Thanks for posting vid!!!
It's too bad they didn't include C.S.N.'s whole set in the 40th anniversary box set of Woodstock. What pisses me off is they didn't even include Merrakesh Express or Black Bird. Perhaps they'll include some in the 50th anniversary box set. Just another example of how they squeeze as much life out of one concert as they can so that they can squeeze as much money out of us as possible.
Dude I just got the box set today (ahead of schedule) and I can tell you it's KILLER! The thing that sucks is that the same non-Woodstock version of "Sea Of Madness" is included! I just don't understand the logic behind that one. "Blackbird" probably wasn't included because it's a Beatles song (neither was Ritchie Haven's version of "Strawberry Fields Forever") and the whole Beatles re-issue thing is going on right now.

After Stills' quip about helicopters, Graham just about loses it... some CSN fans know that in the process of getting to Woodstock, Nashie's helicopter almost crashed. This marvellous cat has nine lives, he's accident prone and his guardian angel works overtime.

@blasphemy70 Actually, David Crosby wrote it. He wrote it the night Bobby Kennedy was shot.

Holy Shite, never heard such a chrystal version, just came in my jeans, I can actually hear Crosby sing....

never better -- before drugs and booze started to hammer down crosby and stills.

Sorry,biography not autobiography!!!!
wallingx 2 years ago
In Neil Youngs autobiography 'Shakey' he says that despite being there on stage with CSN he wanted no part of the film and in his own words,'Threatened to hit the cameraman over the head with his guitar if he pointed it anywhere near him'
wallingx 2 years ago
that sounds a bit like him, he is rather a private person even through what he does
secretliescomeout 2 years ago
I was at Woodstock, Young definitely was there. But I don't see him anywhere in this video. Anyone point out the time where you think you see him?
4Peace4All 2 years ago
Congratulations if you really were there.I think that he appears on the minute 03,25,just for a few seconds
elyeye66 2 years ago
yeah, he and Hendrix and his manager stole a pick-up truck at the local airport, and drove to Woodstock ... no helicopter for them!
phddddd 2 years ago
I doubt they stole a pickup, but whatever turns you on.....
4Peace4All 2 years ago 2
Your doubt sure is not knowledge, and why on earth would someone be turned on other than for the neatness of the truth. Your derision ought to be accompanied by research. I heard the pick-up truck story repeated again on the recent anniversary looking back at Woodstock. Neil Young tells it in many of his interviews. So, what's your point?
phddddd 2 years ago
I expressed my opinion, didn't state anything about research. For that matter, neither did you. How would YOU know something like that? Also, there wasn't any derision included in my comment, merely an opinion. I know Neil Young and I've never heard him tell that "story". What's YOUR point?
4Peace4All 2 years ago 3

4Peace4All 2 years ago
with or w/o permission Neil's in the last seconds of that vid and is hard for me to hear in the audio track
boardsailor 2 years ago
Neil was there, and the previous poster was correct - he wouldn't give permission to be included on the album or film.
pac401 2 years ago
In fact, if you listen to the intro in the film Chip Monk says "Please welcome warmly Crosby, Stills, Nash" and there is a brief moment of silence where Young's name is edited out. However, if you get any of the soundtrack recordings the full intro is on there.

I am trying to find the song "Hummingbird" I thought it was CSNY, but I can't find it. Anyone out there who knows?

That's a Seals and Crofts tune, isn't it?

NO.
Young didnt wanna be filmed. He was on the back.
gitarista08 2 years ago
You can see Neil on stage at 3:25 or so on the vid.
notaphaser 2 years ago
Neil wasn't with the band in 1969. That's why they were CSN only.
manumoka 2 years ago
Neil joined them on stage to jam some. He knew Stills/Crosby from Buffalo Springfield
alanwrobel 2 years ago
Neil WAS with them in '69, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, first show was apparently the 17th of August in Chicago, then Woodstock directly after. Or that's what Wiki tells me anyway. He just didn't want to get filmed I guess, threatened some cameramen according to Wiki again..
You can't pretend that's not Neil's guitar in there, no one else sounds like him.
notaphaser 2 years ago
@notaphaser Except Stills, when the two are mixing it up or when he's playing the lead on a Neil song if they perform live and Neil wants to focus on singing. You see it with both BS and CSNY. They're different players, but it's funny that Stills adopts a Neil "accent" on guitar sometimes.

A great song, a great moment by a great band. Just heard them at Saratoga Springs and they opened with this song.
chi4you2 2 years ago
Ypung was there but he won't give them the rights to show him so they either show just CS & N or they block out Young.
alanaim 2 years ago
I think he's pretty much there...at the end...not arguing 'cause maybe he didn't give the rights...but the second lead is Neil and at the end of the video...it's Neil

ya man, that's totally a Neil lead

It's too bad they didn't include C.S.N.'s whole set in the 40th anniversary box set of Woodstock. What pisses me off is they didn't even include Merrakesh Express or Black Bird. Perhaps they'll include some in the 50th anniversary box set. Just another example of how they squeeze as much life out of one concert as they can so that they can squeeze as much money out of us as possible.
stsancho 2 years ago 2
Dude I just got the box set today (ahead of schedule) and I can tell you it's KILLER! The thing that sucks is that the same non-Woodstock version of "Sea Of Madness" is included! I just don't understand the logic behind that one. "Blackbird" probably wasn't included because it's a Beatles song (neither was Ritchie Haven's version of "Strawberry Fields Forever") and the whole Beatles re-issue thing is going on right now.
