We do glassblowing, how would I figure out glass compatibilities? Cool idea! You also mention a hydrogen environment for commercial powder. There are videos on an HHO generator that may spark some ideas for you. Just make sure that is all it sparks!
@dj8083 One of the ingredients is mineral sprites... Go ahead "experiment". Thus I do not take any responsibly for anything stupid you do based off this Info I have given you.
This is very impressive, especially all the detailed instructions.
Do you know of any research into how the powder actually works? I can find lots of obvious stuff on Google about excited electrons emitting photons but why is the rare-earth mix key? What _is_ the final product?
"this is the first time we used a microwave to create something rather than destroy it" destroy it? DO I SENSE A IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO MICROWAVE THIS REFERENCE?
appreciate the crushing of my expectations....in order to complete my most awesome Halloween decorations Ever, I purchased the powder form from my local vendor - completely appreciate the process and enjoyed watching
Perhaps you mentioned it in a previous video, but I'm curious why you didn't synthesize Copper doped Zinc Sulfide? But this Europium, Dysprosium doped Strontium Aluminate is an outstanding Phosphorescent material and you detailing its synthesis for the hobby chemist is an invaluable addition to the field. Perhaps the Morphology that you hint at could be due to an amorphous glazing of glass that blocks a lot of UV from exciting the Phosphor underneath? P.S at 7:45 there is an evil face reflection
@TheBrainParalysis Don't make assumptions. I said you had to do the reaction outside because of the smoke. Thus why i walked away. I also said the door could be blown off. But i never said the microwave could catch fire.
Don't complain about facts that were never actually stated.
i would try a recrystallization of the urea. most cold packs are between 80 and 95% urea. i think it would help by the way it is not made the way you think it is. it is made by the dehydration of ammonium carbamate (NH2COONH4) at elevated temperature and pressure. Ammonium carbamate is obtained by direct reaction of ammonia nh3 with co2. hope this helps
@NurdRage If my neighbors can live through minor explosions and toxic clouds, they can survive a microwave. I have to check on them, see if they're alive.
@NurdRage Funny thing, they used to make urea from dog urine. So if you lived in the 1800s, you REALLY wouldn't want to know how it's made :D. Great videos, thorough and informative.
@Mike211L usually problems arise if you didn't purify your chemicals enough, (you need to perform multiple recrystallizations of the strontium and aluminum nitrates). you also need to use distilled water.
Another problem is getting the microwave to ignite the solution, you might have to experiment with different shapes of containers or amounts of solution or even the position of the container in the microwave.
first take ammonium carbonate and mix it with ammonia and carbon dioxide. Place it all in a sealed container and heat it up until the ammonium carbonate dehydrates and the end result is pure urea crystals and other waste products. got it from ehow (DOT) com (slash) how-does_5194345_urea-made_
Are you not afraid of getting a visit from the local SWAT TEAM because they think you are a homegrown terrorists? Messing with chemicals like that in a fascist regime is not safe.
Is it a good idea to microwave this? P.S. the link in morphology is likely tied to chemical densities. Take samples of the really bright and the really dark from one batch to see what is chemically different. The physical structure alone is likely irrelevant.
@NurdRage If you truely did 10 months of research then you surely hoped on scifinder at least once and found a bunch of articles regarding the synthesis of doped strontium aluminates. You need a temperature controlled muffle furnace (or some other suitable furnace) that can be used with reducing atmospheres. This allows truly precise control of the morphology, which is fundamentally important if you want to obtain long-glow and high brightness phosphors.
nurdrage, good luck exploring... i hope that you can find out how to get same quality as the commercial glow powder!!! <3 you and will continue to watch ur vids. :)
i'm fascinated by all this chemical stuff but i'm dissapointed that i cannot perform something like that on my own (due to these strange ingredients). anyway maybe some day i'll be a chemist

In attempting to make a more uniformly glowing end product have you tried:
1) microwaving thin films instead of doing it in bulk?
2) boiling off the liquid first?
3) using alcohol instead of water?
4) using hydrogen peroxide?
5) finely crushing every component and mixing it dry prior to adding the liquid?
6) doing the combustion several times?
I'm sure there are plenty of tweaks that could be done. Just fooling around until you stumble upon something interesting.
