1. No way in hell he'd have lived if they had been that close and 2. They're not 'top heavy'- the fact is, T-Rex was perfectly balanced, like a suspension bridge. The legs are placed at exactly the right place, the head is counter-balanced by the weight of the thick tail, and vice versa- the arms are short BECAUSE it would make it top heavy. These animals were very well designed and absolutely could move quickly if they chose to. a 10 foot stride means it'd outrun us with a 'power walk.'

Then it might look like the head of something much bigger and scarier. All we have is bones. Yeah and given that T-Rex was relatively smart for a dinosaur it's size, and considering how there has been evidence of pack behavior, they'd likely know their own limitations. If they really wanted to I suppose it would be possible for them to push past 25 on occasion, but only on flat open plains where there's nothing to trip them. Fortunately there was a lot of open ground back then, very suitable for it and it's pack to hunt down prey.
