Actually, look at player like bombsoldier and Ken. They use both aerial and ground attacks in combos. IF you just run away using long range attacks or just use aerials all the time, then your not very good.

personally I use Roy, and yes I think wavedashing is essential, although my friends think im retarted for taking the time to master it, but I still kick there asses, but anyway, you should learn it. and learning good combos and putting them toghether and timing them.
