I saw Valerie open up a show the day after Xmas many years ago in a bill with her, the Kinsey Report. Lonnie Mack and Buddy Guy. She opened with Gladys Night's "Use My Imagination" which was the high point of the show............she pinned me back in my seat!
Val was my best friend at one point circa 1980-84, and I was so fond of her generosity in recognizing the talent in anyone. I hadn't the money to travel to her memorial and her father said he would send me the program. When he did'nt, I was not at all surprised because the reason she changed her name from his (Hall) to Wellington is because she never sang for her father. I believe she has helped me from the other side. Rock on!
I had the pleasure of seeing Valerie a few times in Chicago when I visited in 1992. Once was at Koko Taylor's birthday party at Legends, she performed with Buddy and Koko. Also played with Sons of Blues at BLUES etc. There were 5 people there 3 from Australia, 2 from Germany!! Had a long chat, beautiful woman, GREAT singer. Wish I had my video camera back then:(
I see the great Carlos Johnson on guitar, recognizable for his lefthandedness & up front in the camera shot. Is the other guitarist the equally great Lurrie Bell? He's too far back for me to recognize, and didn't get a solo, which would've cleared up any doubts for sure!
NYC 1980's Winter Music Conference. Standing in the back of some dive waiting to hear some singer that had some buzz I noticed a stunning woman standing next to me. I nudged my friend and said "she looks like she could belt a few bars"
I will never forget the moment that I realized it was Valerie Wellington as she walked to the stage and the sheer pleasure as she began to sing. A Gorgeous and powerful force of nature.
this is definitely why l love Youtube! I had the great pleasure to know and hang out with Valerie when l lived in Chicago in the mid - 80's. She was as real as it got, genuinely born to sing the blues. Always sweet and friendly when her set was over. I miss this part of my life. We miss you sweet talented Valerie. Sing for me when we meet again. love always - josh
Real nice seeing Valerie Wellington again....she was one of my favorites in the 90's Chicago Blues circuit.....her death was certainly saddened me greatly....
