  • This is the definition of "in the pocket."

  • a song will rise began a much greater appreciation for music to this day harmonies really make it. they were a super group. they are a super group. their musicis timeless.

  • A bass, one acoustic guitar...and 3 talented performers combine to ROCK! Don't be afraid to crank this baby! Intensity does not require mega amps, electric guitars, a drummer, or a big screen. But it does require mega talent! Rock on!

  • I heard James Taylor at Tanglewood once make a reference to the "Great Folk Music Scare of the 1960s". I'm sorry but a lot of great songs came out of this period .... and this is one of them.

  • That is the epitome of folk harmony and dynamism! The definition of the art, heart and soul of a live performance. Their energy was contagious and synergy was unequalled. My eternal gratitude for this posting and You tube. Amen.

  • They kept changing the arrangement of this song over the years. Sometimes that's good, but sometimes the purity and intensity of the original is lost somewhere along the way, but not this one. Check out a related song on their first album, "Early In the Morning". Rounding out my trilogy of favorites of their spirituals was "Very Last Day," on their third album, "PP&M In the Wind," which was one incredible album with their covers of Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind" and "Don't Think Twice" on it.

  • fucking great live version! got me high!

  • so great!!!!

    I am so happy!!

  • Peter, Paul and Mary as an entire package -- singing ability, message consistency, appearance, memorability, professionalism -- was simply the best singing group of its time.

    rvatz@towson.edu

  • Forgot how they could rock it. PPM remembered has a neat version too. Not copied just remembered.

  • Forgot how they could rock it

  • omg sooooooooooooooo good !!!!!!

  • Love the way Paul and Mary interact around 2:04

  • Trying to compare to Reverend Gary Davis to PPM reminds me of the old saying, "trying to conpare oranges and apples"

  • definetely special

  • I often wonder if Peter, Paul and Mary know or knew the pleasure they bring and brought for so many years to people not just of all races and religions, but also of all political beliefs. I have dozens of their songs on my ipod, and they would not agree with my politics, but they are ingenuous and, most of all, spectacularly talented. To me they are/were uniquely talented.

    I love and loved them.

    rvatz@towson.edu

  • And they wonder why we get exasperated with today's music! This is just superb.

  • They sang some songs that were by others......none had the "voice" that they presented to a nation about the anti war sentiment. They were at the LB Johnson White House as guests and SANG: Where Have All the Flowers Gone. That killed their commercial carrers. It was bold, it was courageous.I was a kid seeing the messed up guys coming back from Nam.They did the right thing.FULL CIRCLE: In 02, they were at Atlanta, Ga (RED STATE) and played to a HALF HOUSE.I was there. To hell with the warhawks!

  • Oh YES!!! This is music!

  • Checked out Rev Gary Davis version of this. Pretty good but I still favor this one. But, thanks for introducing me to the Rev. Good stuff.

  • 2old2Rock,

Evidently not! Thanks so much for putting this up!

    Yeah!

  • unbelievable talent.....

  • Passion...pure, unadultered, passionate singing...

  • I've never seen more powerful 3 people in my life on this song. I don't think any three poeple could put more into this song than PP&M. To me, they live and breath this song and it reaches to the depths of my soul. Marc Trainor.

  • sure beats rap music.

  • A brave effort from this well meaning, well rehearsed but ultimately commercial group, but you should listen to Rev Gary Davis' original.

  • @jackwarshaw Oh puhleese.....Brave effort?? I'll try to find the Rev's original. But, under any circumstances this is more than a " brave effort". Where did you come up with that phrase anyway?

  • @jackwarshaw they were a commercial success, yes... you make that sound like a bad thing, it's not. PP&M were about so much more than just seeling thir next record. They were about activisim and doing the right thing as well as being entertainers. They asked questions, sought answers, inspired us, delighted us, and put us in touch with our inner child. Their songs can express our souls.

Learn a bit more about PP&M befor you dismiss them as simply 'commercial.'

  • I was lucky enough to see them in concert a couple of times and loved it. The best harmony I've ever heard. I bought their first album as my very first LP purchase in 1961 and have listened faithfully ever since.

  • They were absolutely fabulous! WOW!

  • they are so powerful, i really love them. its curious how my music preferences change as i grow and become maturer .. this is real music

  • OMG, that's good. I don't remember them doing stuff like this. I was too young in the 60s to appreciate PPM, and I paid little attention again until now. I am essentially discovering them really for the first time now, and I am VERY impressed. Wow.

  • @tsmonki I'd like to hear Harlem Street Singer do this song . . . why don't you post it?

  • It doesn't get any better than this. They're having one hell of a great time!

  • who ever heard of a FIERCE folk song ??? but that is exactly what this song is . makes me want to go out and protest something posthaste ! bless you 3 ; always loved you ; always will .

  • Love the way Pete moves his feet.Fancy.

  • Most awesome Trio ever.Did they ever change the world-past-present and future.

  • MY GOD - that was awesome !

  • NOW THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT FRIENDS.

  • WATCH MARY GRIN WHEN PAUL STARTS TO GO OFF INTO SPACE. WONDERFUL!

  • Why is there no other group that is doing what they are doing? Did we abort all the good ones? I had law breakers!

  • I was fortunate enough to see PPM in concert twice..in the early 70's and early 80's.

Both concerts were magical. There is a good reason that their music has endured....pure talent. No gimmicks....just pure talent. I agree, Marc, they "own" this song.

  • This song is a good part of the reason I named a beloved cat of mine "Samson" that I had for 17 years. This song still makes me want to get up and dance ! ~~~ Chuck I will always love you my dear kitty Samson ! Miss you !

  • TESTIFY!

  • Awesome! Got even more 'hits' than 'Too Much of Nothing" from whence I came to this PP&M classic. They were having the kind of fun doing this song that only those with real talent can ever know. God they were good and I'm a Republican.

  • @sangell3

    Bloody AMAZING

  • Shine on Mary, shine on.

  • wow I absolutely got hooked up to the entire song! it's a great tune!

  • Man i love the way Pete moves his feet. This is a great tune. I Miss Mary awfully.love you peter and Paul god Bless.

  • i forgot how good they were....she's not singing flat....she's fabulous....three unique voices

  • This is one of my favorite PPM clips on youtube. It's a great example of what Mary described as a vocal trapeze act. One voice reaching for and depending on the other voices to lift it which in turn lifted them as well. I get a huge smile on face and a tear in my eye every time I watch this clip. Today is Mother's day. Thanks Mom for playing those PPM records when I was a kid. They taught me harmonies, got me started on the guitar and along the way the meaning of the lyrics sunk in too.

  • @bricknboxer

I love that analogy - vocal trapeze act. That is right on!.

Finding these clips on utube is a gift... saw them many times in person , but this brings it all back. The first clips are the purest - hard to not choke up. I played the guitar too - knew 'em all, and still do today. There was never a group like them. She was magnificent. I am still so sad she, and therefore they, are gone...

  • 40 years later and there still the Berries.

  • I feel like shoutin'!!!

  • they were great even when they were stoned like here

  • @davidb10se3... ya, like you would know, moron... These were my friends, and they were NOT stoned, although you may well be...

  • @davidb10se3 YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!

No one could perform like that stoned. The words would be slurred or the voice would be off key.

    SHEESH, is nothing sacred????

  • forgot how great this song was . had the album in the 60's. Lot's of sound from just one guitar

  • Pual, ne Noel.

    But where is COSMIO PROPELLOR?

  • Great video... fantastic performance..... it's great to see it here on Youtube.

  • Who's playing the base?? They are GOOD!!

  • @HolyMotherofGrid His name is Richard Kniss and he accompanied PP&M 98% of the time.

  • @thesongislove Thanks a lot! I;ll look him up elsewhwere also.

  • this stuff just rocks.... peter yarow iis not even playing in this concert. (he becomes a singer) totally brilliant!!

  • His name is Paul -_-. Think Paul (Tall) :p

  • @ALLscaledUP Actually, Peter is playing the guitar and Noel Paul Stookey ( the taller one) is singing and clapping, and yes, I AGREE... this stuff just rocks!!! ; }

  • To peach , you're sooo right real A I's

  • O dear God, that really rocks! Je to fakt síla...mazec...

  • the REAL American Idols

  • does anyone know where I can find more performances like this....with similar kick-ass harmonies...of any band?

  • I listen a lot to chris hillman of the byrds - some of his solo stuff has good harmony singing. Some buffalo springfield has great singing - try the song, We'll see

  • GREAT video. How sad that 40 years later young people listen to rap music about killing and drugs...

  • Young people listen to a lot of things.

I'm 24, and not only do I listen to Peter Paul & Mary,

but I love them! I would love to see a rapper take on

Hangman, or any of their greats! RIP Mary!

  • mediamamachick... you nailed it.

  • TOOO.......COOl are Peter Paul and U know. That girl who died recently, but no one cared to report it... R I P...Mary.. u gave us so much with your voice.

  • They are sooo in the pocket with their harmonies. I love how they just ride on each other's notes and non verbal cues.

One tapping foot, a guitar , 2 soulful cats and force called mary, can make sound so big it can shake the rafters. current artists take note. pure talent no filler.

Thank you Peter, Paul and Mary for the artistry. AMAZING!

    sing on children,

    Mediamama chick

  • @mediamamachick Excellent prose my friend.

  • @mediamamachick Well put.

  • This is what MUSIC is!!!

  • I named my cat Samson after being inspired by this song !

Had the little guy for 17 years!

  • Funny, my dad used to have a cat called Samson as well :))) And he says he's so glad that he can now, after the years, see PPM on youtube when it was forbidden, some years ago, and no way how to get it to our country. That's why we know the songs but with Czech texts and not in original...

  • I appreciate your thoughts.

I find that unexpected that PPM would be forbidden some years back. Much o f their music is of love, goodness, charity and spiritually uplifting.

    Yes!

My poor old cat Samson who I had for 17 years died of cancer 3 months ago and when ever I would play this song or the movie Samson and Delilah, I would make jokes to him about being Samson ! LOL.

  • Well, of course music of love, goodness and charity and spirituality was forbidden in a country, where the communists ruled :))) Lucklily, these days are gone and we can freely listen to that !

  • Great vid ! Really gets you moving. :-)

  • The bass in this performance is so damn groovy--I love it!

  • ho lee cow. that was FANTASTIC

  • Too bad we can't award 6 stars!

This awesome performance reminds us PPM weren't just recording stars -- they were the real deal, better in person where you see all the music coming from just 3 voices, 2 guitars (just 1 here) & a bass! This was about the time I saw my 1st PPM concert=hooked for life. Probably did this 100s of times, yet still love doing it.

JohnGee: 1968-69, judging from other songs on this Smothers Bros. appearance: Too Much of Nothing (Late Again, 1968) & Day is Done (1969)

  • You are absolutely right. They were great in person because they were for real. Didn't rely on a bunch of electronics to make their sound.

  • This is simply awesome. PPM at the absolute peak.

  • Anyone know what year this was?

  • Mary will live forever.

  • that mary was one awesome DIVA.

i love her and i miss her.

  • "Hammer," "Puff," "Jet Plane," and the others are all wonderful, but I hope all we PP&M fans get to see this and remember the group for *this* performance.

  • God rest her soul can have you heard the DISHONOR to Peter Paul and Marys name it in that stupid britney spears song called 3 she talks about 3 somes

  • I always was in love with Mary. I looked the whole world over for a real Mary but in the end I realized there was only one for me. See you on the other side,Mary...

  • ...and so at one concert Peter told the story: This was their closing song at every concert and in an early performance Peter and Paul were stomping their feet, Mary was swinging her hair, and as they sang the last line: "If I had my way in this wicked world...I would tear this building down..." and the riser they were standing on crashed under their enthusiasm. Always in my heart PP&M. You were the rock of my youth. Margo...gone to graveyards every one.

  • Watch Mary at the very end, when she stands erect and smiles at the camera. She knows they did good!

  • Peter Paul & Mary have been and will continue to be the greatest folk group in history - may you R.I.P. dear Mary, I hope you are in heaven singing with sweet Odetta and all the other wonderful folkies that have welcomed you....your forever friend.....Saskia

  • One of their most amazing performances on video ever. Mary, we love you and will miss you -- what will the world be like without Mary Travers? Fortunately, we can relive you on YouTube again and again. RIP.

  • Powerful song. The fact that their harmonies could actually excite is testament to their amazing talent.

  • thanks so much for creating such amazing music

  • RIP Mary..thanks for sharing your God given gifts all these years..you've left behind such beauty for all of us.

  • Wow! She knocks my socks off! Fantastic!!!

  • The world could use a lesson from Mary and the boys about how to treat our fellow man and woman. Peace and Love to All.

  • God Bless you Mary, you have gone on your way to your reward in heaven and great it will be.

  • R.I.P. Mary, thanks for the sweet melodies.

  • fantastic!

  • Great Bass in the background

  • Just "f"-in' smokin'!!!!!!

  • This goes to show what great performers can do with three voices, an acoustic guitar, an upright bass. foot stomping and hand clapping. Between 2:07 and 2:15 , the intensity is so high, you swear that they are going to lose it. At this point they are a polyphonic jazz band with each voice going off in different directions.

These are magical moments and we are lucky to have it captured on tape

  • @gchs1965 Right On - compare to the band and soundstage they use on American Idol to make the kids sound good. In 10 years of Idol, only Carrie Underwood comes close to the talent these three had.

  • those harmonies kick serious ass!!!:D

  • Ok, I'm probably gonna get some comments on what I'm about to say, but, I've been in and around music all my life, and I don't think your gonnna get any three people together with better harmony, more soul, and do a better job on this song than PP&M. In my opinion, they "own" this song. Marc Trainor.

  • I'm with you marctrainor...priceless.

  • @ marctrainor ,

    No my friend.

There are many who love them as much as we do.

This was a time of love,

or thoughtfulness and love towards people.

I pray people will relearn Peter Paul and Mary's love for mankind.

  • @marctrainor And I say AMEN to that...........

  • @marctrainor Fuk that... Mr Blind Willie Johnson "owns" this song.

this is a highly inferior rendition

  • @marctrainor can't agree more.. This is great!

  • @marctrainor Marc, you brought out the divergence this trio stood for for nearly 50 years. The fact is, everybody is right. The fact is they marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. when even whites were being killed for walking the streets of Selma picketing for the rights of all. That is the song Peter Paul and May own. It has many titles, it features each of them, and it is love.

  • @marctrainor

    you are right!

  • @marctrainor No arguement from me. With few exceptions they "own" every song they ever did. I have every one of their albums and most of their solo efforts. But hte three of them together created a magical blend that may never be repeated. What a shame that this kind of real music has fallen out of "popular" fashion. coyote49@graceba.net

  • Superb performance as always from PP&M, although Paul does look a little 'lost' without his guitar .

And just to confirm Paul's, hand isn't hurt, you can see his guitar in the background as the clip starts .

  • Great Song! Ty for posting

  • This song is called "Samson and Delilah",or at least it is when the Grateful Dead play it. judging from the design on the floor, this is from the Smothers Brothers show. And dig those polyester doubleknit suits! Thanks for posting this, I've never seen them do this one before.

  • PP&M were doing this when the Grateful

Dead were merely the Cheerfully Infirm.

  • That doesn't really matter though, since it's basically the same song. Although the Dead's version is expanded and improved

  • I don't think the Dead's version is better at all. PP&M's version has soul! The Dead had more instruments and voices involved, but no-way was it better than this. This is real musicianship!!!

  • The Reverend Gary Davis was doing this song when Peter Paul and Mary were drinking from sippy cups. It's his song, after all, and they did him right by crediting it to him and paying him for it. Look it up. His title for it was simply, "Samson and Delilah"

  • Paul's hand was not hurt. The song was arranged for one guitar. Note how enthusiastically Paul claps.

  • I LOVE THIS GROUP OVER ALL OTHERS...However, it appears that Paul's left hand must have been hurt, because I have never seen him without his guitar.

  • LOVE them. LOVE the song. Thanks for posting!

  • Timeless!

  • this group was/is one of most talented of their time and still more relevant than what is heard today

  • I saw this on TV the other day and had simply forgotton what great musicians these guys are. With just their instruments and well blended voices they really rocked. Such a feel for music and counterpoint.... just superb. Rock on guys, from a happy hippy..

  • Vitriolic posts do not deserve replies. This group launched a whole movement towards people getting together at parties, singing songs, looking at the social issues of our day, singing with our hearts. They were the main reason so many of us bought a guitar and PLAY IT TO THIS VERY DAY. Where are the protest songs of today? Where is the movement towards unity and freedom? Shut up and sit down if you can't take the message.

  • Couldn't agree more! Thanks for your reply.

  • babaradio

Thanks for talking about our day. Our university trio never measured up to this one, but we had some success with other PPM songs. And yes, 40 years later I haven't come across anything like those days.

  • #1, this is one of my favorite songs, and this vid is an incredible performance...#2, when someone starts complaining about how poor things are these days I have to break in and say that the protest songs of today are all around you, you just aren't hearing them..."the movement" is there, it's just not on television, radio, newspaper, or internet...seek out independent media, independent folk, classical, and rock music (much richer and bigger now than it was 40 years ago) and you will find it!

  • note: my comment was in reply to the comments below by 'babaradio'...I wasn't just commenting out of the blue...hmmm, this is a persistent youtube problem!

  • Very well put, sirtop.. I have been preaching the same thing. There is a plethora (maybe 2 plethoras) of great music today, but in smaller clubs and concert halls. Lots of great singer/songwriter/musicians writing and performing.

  • This is as intense and passionate as any performace I have ever seen...too cool!

  • Right -- one of the greatest songs from one of the all time greatest groups ever. We shall never see their likes again...

  • too bad they dont show the bass player , I guess it was Milt Hinton

  • Dick Kniss, I think.

  • I have seen them many many times and never saw them do this live but so would have loved it!!! They are the best.

  • Fantastic performance of this song. Probably my favorite PP&M song. I believe this was from The Smothers Brothers show. (I recognize the Tiffany lamp pattern on the floor).

  • Great to see this song done this way as I was always used to The "grateful Dead's"

    Samson and Delilah.

    1977 Terrapin Station.

PPM were and still are one of my favorite talents. They can bring the soul right out of you, make you cry and send you back to a time when quality was a vision rather than a word.

  • One of their best numbers along with "Old Coat" from their moving album.

  • I love them

  • It's sad -- the world is so full of lost, pathetic souls like you, jealous of others' success... And no one cares what you like or don't like. PP&M are an American institution -- and anyone who disagrees with that doesn't deserve to live in this country. Sure, you're entitled to your opinions -- but I don't want to hear them. And neither does anyone else. No one wants to hear your juvenile negativity. So just shut up. Before I kill you.

  • Let hate be . ...You can't bring skank to the light,no matter how hard you try,or how good your intentions.

  • Why don't you twonks stop arguing amongst yourselves. If you don't like PPM, you shouldn't be looking at this site. Hope we don't have to hear from you again, because nobody is really interested in your views, or the other arsehole who has been making the silly threats.

  • If people would stop replying to my comments then I wouldn't come to this video and commenting. Other than the person who posts this video anyone can comment and say what they wish. I haven't been rude. Just stated my opinion. If people don't want to hear different opinions don't go on youtube.

  • You say that you haven't been rude, but you have. You stated that PPM suck, which is not a very nice thing to say. Good music is timeless, as someone said, so if it is some of the modern tuneless rubbish that appeals to you more, then all I can say is that you are welcome to it.

  • Well, they interepreted in a way that worked for them. "Ruined"? That's like saying there should only be one cake recipe, and everyone has to make it the same way. What a monodimensional and closed outlook you have. You sure have the right to your preference, as we all do, but to state as "fact" that they "ruined" it, is simply your own opinion. I think they are magnificent...but, that is opinion, too, not fact, and I dont shove it down anyone's throat.

  • Sorry, It's my opinion that they suck and they ruined the song. I never said it can't be "remade" I just said it was bad remake. Like a recipe some people are good cooks and can remake something even better and some for the worse.

  • Yes...that's exactly what it is: your opinion. And my opinion, along with millions of others, is that they are true artists. This song would prob. not have had the exposure that PP&M gave it, and I'm sure the Rev. Gary Davis isn't complaining as they helped put his name out there as a writer. Royalties probably didn't cause any complaints either. I respect your opinion; I just don't agree with it.

  • I respect your right to an opinion as well, but I don't agree with it.

  • What a pathetic, miserable lost soul you are. I truly pity you.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow. Thats not hyperbolic, vitriolic, or an adhominem fallacy at all. Im being sarcastic by the way.

You make it sound like I support the genocide of the Jews rather than just the fact that I stated my opinion about a group whose style of music I dont particularly like doing a cover of a song that I love.

Comments are for opinions. You have a right to disagree with my opinion, but personal attacks are a bit over the line.

  • I'll pray for you brother/sister because clearly you are troubled. Your threats are not scary, but sad. I hope you find some professional help because threatening peoples lives on the internet is very sad.

  • Geez ,JT1992!! Get a GRIP, man! it's just a silly Blog! It 's not worth making these pathetic and crazed threats ! Come ON ! So WHAT if someone doesn't like PP& M -Ta heck with them! Why get SO bent outa shape about it?

  • hmmm me might attempt this one...she IS a hottie like everyone been saying....isnt she ;D

  • Saw them several times in my teens and twenties. Boy, were they great live. People who have just heard records have no idea!

  • We never had any idea how superb n grandeur PPM was in their performances.Wev been singing PPM songs, playing vinyl records n CDs, revelations in youTube is stunning - technology was not as sophisticated before..PPM is stage-powerhouse, electrifying, artistically brilliant..

  • Aftr listening/watching more PPM vids, we notice their musicality is in-depth n superior..theyre no ordinary typical folk-singing group. Unique style, expressive, audience impact-vocal prowess, harmony, showmanship-chemistry is perfect..PPM, then n now, is still unbeatable!

  • I was literally changed for life after watching them in concert in the early '60's! They were wonderful!

  • You are so right!

  • The best!Thank you.

  • I actually got to sing back up for Peter Paul and Mary in 1997 at Kent State University. It was a very special moment for me.
