I was Signal Maintainer at Irondale Al before it was sold to a short line and I had 8 sets of lights exactly like this. It was an old SAL line, then CSX (when I came there in 90) then was sold off.
The Way the lights are mounted on the pole makes me wonder if these used to be WigWags at one point in time. Pretty cool and yes I love the TearDrop bell. Its a nice vintage Bell to hear.
You know why I think those bells are strong sounding? I think that when the old contacts died, they replaced em, and made sure that the bells rung nice.
A PAIR of Teardrops! Wow! Good find. They are definently ex wig-wags. The bells have to be the original ones. They still sound pretty strong. The signals do need some paint though. What if the Heart of Georgia railroad converted them BACK to wig-wags? That would be talked about by railfans nationwide. The crossing would make a great setup for some photo run-bys with some steam locomotives, too.
Everything about this video screams awesome! Love the old signals, love the two teardrop bells, and love the horn! You know what kind it is? I couldn't place it.
I like this crossing setup. This indeed looks like they converted or even modernized (at the time) from being a wigwag setup. It's a shame they didn't keep the wigwags at this crossing since it's small enough to still warrant that type of signal. However, it still has that vintage look to it and I like it. That makes me wonder when this crossing signal was converted from a wigwag to a flashing signal.
I enjoy the US&S Teardrop bells - classic railroad crossing signals at its finest! It reminds me of a similar railroad crossing with these same type of signals here in St. Petersburg, especially the one on 16 St S south of 1 Av S on the former CSX (former SAL) line which is today the Pinellas Trail. When CSX abandoned the line a few years ago the old style crossing signals were taken down as well. Excellent video!
@storm24awesome US&S Made these bells. They were the first alone mechanical bells ever made. US&s got sold January 1st 2009, so they are no longer producing equipment. The teardrop bell is no longer in production, but i want Western Cullen Hayes, a signal manufacturer company, #1 in America, to patent the bell and re create it. I would love to see it back up again.
Lovely crossing. You really need to get pictures of it before it's gone! 4/5. Sorry, but no tripod lead to a shaky video, but I admire everything else.
are they still made?.

Very cool and unusual signals.

Very strange-looking lights. Makes you think it could of been a wig-wag.

Throw a little paint on the targets and the teardrops, and that crossing will look super spiffy.
