The chopping note is known as 'dhira-dhira' when bayan is also played simultaneously. when only tabla (dayan) is played then it is 'thira-thira'. One needs to slide the palm sideways over the tabla to make that sound. It needs lot of practice to perfect it.

Tabla drums are amazing, theres a trick where you hit the top, then immediately slide your palm accross the top to "bend" the note, almost like a string on a guitar. ABSOLUTELY amazing
