Noone said anything bad about gretzky or lemiuex, it is just simply that ovechkin is better. And as far as being assaulted in front of the net, you dont know what your talkin about. The rules for physical play in front of the net are still the same. Moreover, if you pay attention, the best hockey players dont score their goals from campin out in front of the net. Its an important aspect, but its not how the majority of great goals are scored.

I have been watching hockey for a long time, and for a long time I was a firm believer that Mario Lemieux was the most well rounded player of all time and the only reason he didn't set a ton of records was his constant injuries. I watched Ovechkin a lot this year and he is better than Mario was (and that pains me to say). The best things about Ovechkin (aside from his amazing skill) is his toughness and that he plays the game with a youthful exuberance. The NHL isn't a job for him, it's fun!

Its important to remember that the goalies are way better these days simply because they wear bigger pads. All of the scoring records from years ago were set in a time when it was much easier to score. Taking that into consideration; Ovechkin is certainly one of the best players of all time.

it is also important to remember that back then star players were getting assualted if they went to the front of the net, now u cant even breathe on a guy without taking a penalty, with all the 5 on 4's and 5 on 3's the nhl is making it pretty easy for guys to pad there stats. and if gretzky or lemieux had the kind of training player developement and equipment that players use nowadays im sure they'd be better too. that arguement works both ways
