Charley & Humphrey also appeared on the Phoenix station KTVK, Channel 3. I remember watching them around 1963-64, I was in kindergarten at the time.
I also remember we also had a small single of Charley & Humphrey, a Christmas record: Charley was trying to recite the Night before Christmas, and was constantly interrupted by Humph, who couldn't follow the tale very well.
Holy cow, what a flashback! I grew up in the Bay Area in the '80s and used to see these two all the time when I was little. Had been trying to remember their names and managed to find my way to this video.
@MichaelHansenFUN This is Bach, brandenburg concert #3, and a synthesized version performed by Wendy Carlos. The album you will find the music on is called switched on Bach.
Great vids! Thanks for posting them. I used to love the Charley and Humphrey show when I was a kid. Believe it or not, I still have an autographed picture of Charley and Humphrey that I got in the early 70's by writing to KTVU.
I still yell out "glue....I need glue" when I've broken something...and whenever someone takes something, "1002 stupid things to do...borrowin without askin" is the first thing that comes to my mind...I'm so lucky to have been a child of the 80's in San Francisco...
Growing up in the slums of the southbay was a hard period. Humphrey and hambone brought a smile to face in the 80's. My kids are fortunate thru my hard work. They love this video. Thanks for posting this
Thank you SF Chronicle and an even BIGGER THANK YOU to Mr. Pat McCormick! This will forever be special to me (and my children!). Can you share the one about Bee's?
I remember growing up in Eugene, Oregon back in the '80s we got KTVU 2 and even as a little kid I regarded their kids programming as extremely lame s*&t. Ramblin Rod and KPTV 12 (Portland's, independent until 1995 UHF counterpart to KTVU) was some GR8 stuff back in the day!
I would love to find the Bits and Pieces segment where Humphrey fights with Sneezer (the cat with sunglasses). At the end, Sneezer apologizes to Humphrey and says, "I'm sorry for pokin' youz in da nose." Does anyone else remember that one?
Just FYI, for everyone looking for other Bits & Pieces segments, Golabutron has posted "I'm Proud to Be a Japanese American" and 80sCommercialVault has posted "I'm Proud to be an Italian American."
I love the "Bees" & "Boating Safety" clips too. Hope they can be salvaged as well. Thanks for finding & posting these blasts from the past. Murdoch murdered all that was good on Channel 2.
Does anyone remember 'Snippets' from Channel 44? It was a cartoon featuring a large, green, ostrich-like bird which led a crew of kids on various educational songs about various bodily functions.
That's right! I got "Most Important Person" mixed up with 'Snippets' for some reason. Probably for the reason you mentioned. I also remember the cartoon ducks (one a mallard and the other white) talking about predjudice. Was that a Snippets or something different?
Some 'Snippets' seemed to be cast-off's from those appallingly bad Christian stop-motion morality tales. They make fun of them on 'Adult Swim' now!
Just when I think I found the most obscure things on Youtube I stumble across this! This really brings back memories of growing up in the bay area! Thanks for the wonderful upload!
we used to get this sation here on the southern oregon coast then it went away in 91 but I grew up with it and I remember these guys bob wilkins from creature feature and dialing for dollars with pat mccormick..
Thank you so much for posting! I searched the internet for this a few years ago and was sad I couldn't find it. It's the only one (besides the dog getting sick from waves that I remember from my childhood).
Now my boyfriend understands why I sometimes say "glue... gonna need lots of glue...".
Man, what a trip down memory lane! I used to see these two all the time growing up in the Bay Area in the early-80s. The "bits & pieces" logo alone brought a smile to my face. :)
I remember this! I was a little kid then. I watched Channel 2 all the time, some time before it was called Fox Kids! I'd watch cartoons after watching Punky Brewster. This one is my favorite! Do you have any more Bits & Pieces?
they were showing these during the early midday shows on ch. 2, up to around the early 90s if i recall..hardly see anything like this anymore...bring back locally produced TV!
This is the only Charly and Humphrey borrow episode I remember. I remember that bits and pieces jingle. I think I saw this back in 1988 or 1989 maybe???
1988 or 1989...Yeah, that's about right. Channel 2 stop showing Charly & Humphrey PSAs around that time, along with the other PSAs (ethnicity & "acceptance" pride).
I havent seen this in over 20 years...watching this unlocked the fountain of youth...it usually came on after the cartoons were over....I never knew their names..but the memory of them has haunted me for years because I never got to see them once KTVU stopped broadcasting in the Central Valley...Thank you for posting these clips.
Charlie and Humphrey!!!! Have you ever forgotten a whole swathe of your life and then, with one click, had it come crashing back into your mind again??? My love of pugs dates from Humphrey. My fear of horses comes from Charlie's officiousness. WOW!
Dammit, I've been looking for a Charlie and Humphrey t-shirt for years! I didn't think one existed. Do you know if they are still selling this shirt? Is there any website you know of that I can order from?
@CMLion. Normally, you're right. Horses don't like glue factory. The reason the dog yelled "Glue..I need glue" is because he broke the lamp (which he borrowed without asking" and needs the glue to put it back together. He is in trouble one way or the other, though.
The one with the Beatles' song was interesting because a "word" was blurted out...The verse that goes, BLACK, WHITE, GREEN, RED, CAN I TAKE MY******** The actual fill in: "Can I take my friend to bed" (rhyming with "RED") KTVU blurted "BED" out because it construed having sex.
What a great memory of those early days in the 70's living in Vallejo. I was 11 years old and came home after school to watch their show every day at 3 or 4 PM. Then on Saturday night I used to watch "Creature Features" with Bob Wilkins (RIP). Thanks for posting all of these priceless clips.
Though I was born & raised in San Jose in the 70's...I'll Always remember watching Channel 2, along with this clip!
Does anyone remember Captain Cosmo? Or Scooby Doo being shown on at 3pm, right after Bowling For Dollars?
What about those segments on "Multicultural" Heritage...The ones that had a child of different nationality who would say, "I'm proud to be a...-American!"
ABSOLUTLEY!! I totally remember the multicultural heritage ones..Im waiting with bated breath for these and the Dialing for Dollars episodes to be on Youtube.
Yes! I'm *dying* to see these again. Someone must have them.
"I am proud to be a Chinese/Italian/Mexican/Japanese etc.. American!"
These were short vignettes encouraging kids to be proud of their ethnic heritage, although the only thing I really remember is that they were kind of stereotypical. At least the Italian one was. It featured a fat little boy eating spaghetti and hanging out in a pastry shop. The Mexican one was about a young boy proud that his ancestors worked in the fields.
A different PSA was about a young Hispanic girl fantasizing about what she wanted to be when she grew up. I think she imagines herself in all these different professions, including a firefighter, a zookeeper, and a bunch of others I'm forgetting. At the end, though, I think she says something about just being a kid or just being herself.
One last PSA had a very catchy tune. It was set to the Beatles' song "All Together Now" and featured a bunch of kids playing together, learning cooperation, and sitting on a bench where they were nose to nose, or turn to face each other nose to nose.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!! I have a priceless piece of MY childhood growing up in Frisko to share with my children! Talk about memories of an innocent time!!!
Holy cats!!!!! Charlie and Humphrey!!!!! Childhood memories are happening to me! Damn, I remember so much of this, KTVU, Pat McCormick, the 12 o'clock movie and dialing for dollars. I just cannot believe it....I just can't believe it. Thank you, thank you.
I hope the one where Humpry is talking about joining the coast guard gets added. He is watching the video of the ship riding the waves and gets sea sick from it. lol!
This one was a tribute to the Coast Guard. Humphrey struts in proudly saying he wants to join them. Charley sarcastically says to Humphrey that he gets seasick in the bathtub. Humphrey goes on gushing about the great things the Coast Guard does as stock footage of a Coast Guard boat is shown sailing over rough seas. As the film goes on, Humphrey slowly gets seasick watching it and runs off ill. Charley can only laugh.
You gotta remember, this was the 1970's...Media didn't know any better. It was all Chicano pride & Italians being associated with all things "The Godfather"
Believe it or not: There was a PSA for "acceptance"...Gays.
It featured two young caucasins with shaggy hair, hiking, biking, playing frisbee. At the end, they placed their arms around each other as one of them said: "Steve's not only my best friend...He's my 'partner'!"
Oh My God!!! I haven't seen this since I was eight years old but I just quoted "Glue, I need Glue!" last week. I had forgotten where it had come from. Amazing what sticks with you after 30 some odd years
i miss the i,m proud to be a mexican ameriscan psa filmed on fruitvale ave in oakland and the other psa about the girl sittingdown imagining he career options she a fire fighter and police oficers good shit old school memorys in the bay area....
The music was on Switched-On Bach or The Well Tempered Synthesizer both by Wendy Carlos. My dad had both albums and it was certainly on one of them.
Oh man I remember Charley & Humphrey so well, I feel 10 years old again! I know Humphrey is a bull dog but I have a pug who acts just like him, I'll have to get her a cap and an apple core necklace...
Just an FYI, the piece specifically is the last movement to Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no. 3, performed here by Wendy Carlos on the Moog synthesizer.
man this almost brought tears to my eyes i grew up in oakland back in the 80s and i remember these shorts like it was yesterday havn,t seen these since at least 1989 really took me back to my childhood i miss the 80s....
Ha! I still think about this segment to this day. I grew up in the bay area and remember the bits and pieces tune. What a flood of memories, thank you!
I remember this intro only , "BITS AND PIECES", and thats all. I also remember this segment. Also the song that was used on here is a classical music piece (probably played on a harpschichord...) and believe it or not, at one time, my friends/next door neighbors, were able to find the source of the music (parents had tons of classical music records) but it has been lost since then (I also may have found it on Classic Arts Showcase) but I dont think the music here is from "Switched-On Bach"
Oh yea, a blast from the past! I have to agree the previous post. The honey bee one and the bully one with the cat "pussyfoot" would be awesome as well. Can those be found?
Continued... C: You know, if you leave the little honeybees alone they won't bother you. And besides, they're useful for pollenation and all that and besides, did you know that out of all the world's insects, only honeybees produce food that humans eat, and - uh -- whoopsie.... a honybee just landed on mah... mah back leg. Now if we just let him alone he'll fly away.
I can't wait for SFChronicle to put up "BEES," if at all possible! It went EXACTLY like this: H: Charles, a herd of bees is chasing me! C: A HERD of bees? H: You've heard of bees? C: Yes.. H: Well a herd of em is chasin me! C: Well what did you do to rile em up? H: I DIDN'T DO NOTHIN! ...poked a stick in their hive, got some honey! C: Well, that'll rile em up! I mean, that'll make a bee mad! TO BE CONTINUEED
Thank you!!!! I've been looking for this for months!!! Even though I live in AZ now, I'd still be watching KTVU if I could get a signal! :) Too bad they don't still have creature feature too!
OMG squared! My husband didn't understand why i was hooting & hollering while watching this, as he didn't grow up in the Bay Area. I just forwarded this to my little sister (now in her 40's like me). Missed this!!!!!
Thank you for posting this!!! KTVU if you are reading, please start running these again. Kids today (did I really just write that?!?!) need some Charley and Humphrey :)
As others have said, thanx for posting the "Charlie & Humphrey" PSAs. I totally remember them. Do you have the one where Humphrey's listening to a radio turned up really loud, and Charlie suggests he uses headphones?
Wow, this sent chills up my spine and my hair stood on end. Watching this was like looking through a window, directly at my childhood. Brilliant! Thanks for posting this classic piece of Bay Area nostalgia!
My daughter was doing a project and got up from the table and said..."Glue..I need Glue" I asked her, "You know where that came from?" So I jumped on the computer to see if it might be on here. You guys are great posting this! Great memories of growing up. Oh...and yes my daughter laughed when Humphrey screamed his famous "Glue" line.
YYYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! I have been looking for these since forever! Thank you so much. Now reliving my childhood is so much more complete!!
Ahhh. Now I kinda recognize the voice as a television commentator of some ilk in the bay area...I kn ow the show this is..I was 7 when I moved to south san francisco in 1957.
I remember watching Captain Satellite every day around 3 or4. He would have two kids on as helpers, and one day the moved over to the right room, and when the doors opened, there sat a news guy at his desk. A gag only the captain would get...wonderful local hi-jinks...don't get me started on KTVU's wrestling hi-jinks.
I have Picture Pages on VHS. :-)

He is watching the video of the ship riding the waves and gets sea sick from it. lol!
someguy209 3 years ago
I really want to see that one again, too!

Multicultural vignettes:
You gotta remember, this was the 1970's...Media didn't know any better. It was all Chicano pride & Italians being associated with all things "The Godfather"
Believe it or not: There was a PSA for "acceptance"...Gays.
It featured two young caucasins with shaggy hair, hiking, biking, playing frisbee. At the end, they placed their arms around each other as one of them said: "Steve's not only my best friend...He's my 'partner'!"
This was shown late at night.

ZazuYen 3 years ago
Just an FYI, the piece specifically is the last movement to Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no. 3, performed here by Wendy Carlos on the Moog synthesizer.

Ha! I still think about this segment to this day. I grew up in the bay area and remember the bits and pieces tune. What a flood of memories, thank you!
ukedildo 3 years ago
I remember this intro only , "BITS AND PIECES", and thats all. I also remember this segment. Also the song that was used on here is a classical music piece (probably played on a harpschichord...) and believe it or not, at one time, my friends/next door neighbors, were able to find the source of the music (parents had tons of classical music records) but it has been lost since then (I also may have found it on Classic Arts Showcase) but I dont think the music here is from "Switched-On Bach"

Look up Wendy Carlos. She did it, it was a classical album that used synth. The album is called "Switched-On Bach".
I don't know which song it is, but its towards the end.
