  • I don't see where exactly in this video the Trains make the switch from Third rail To the overhead catanary wires? I didn't see the pantographs being raised.

  • the transition isn't shown in this video. There aren't even wires for an up pantograph to hit here. The trains transition between here and Pelham station in the area where there is BOTH third rail and wire.

  • Interesting how catenary towers continue on even when the trains are on third rail and there is no wire underneath the towers. A leftover from when the switchover was further west?

  • yes. the New Haven railroad used to switch over right at Woodlawn as soon as they diverged off the Harlem - by the time their trains cleared the east end of what is today CP212 they were all on AC power...

  • Sounds like flat spots to me!

  • This station looks awesome in the snow.

  • nice, happy that wight stuff is gone, is that sound wheels with flat spots?

  • Very cool!

  • thanks

  • These are Bombadier M3 EMU's right?

  • No. Not even close in any way.

1 - Bombardier didn't have ANYTHING to do with the M3/M3A cars - which were built by Budd in 1983. Bombardier's only EMUs in NY Commuter Service are the M-7 (LIRR) and M-7A (MN) which are both 3rd rail DC only cars - and run on the Hudson & Harlem Lines.

2 - This video does not contain ANY M-3 type cars - as this is the New Haven Line, where overhead AC Catenary provides the traction power (thereby limiting service to only M-2, M-4, and M-6 cars.

  • 3 - The cars in this video are:

    -2 car units = Budd M-2s "Cosmopolitans" (1971-1973).

    -3 car units (8900s) = Tokyu Car Company M-4s (1988).

    -3 car units (9000s) = Morrison-Knudsen M-6s (1992).

  • IT SHOULD however be noted that sometimes the M4s and M6s are spotted in pairs, dummys going inop for whatever reason. Caught that with 8934 / 8935 a few weeks ago.

  • true, but that is semi-rare. Not that it DOESN'T happen but there are:

an M4 set with an M6 middle car.

    AND

an M4 set with no middle car.

    Other than that its rare.

  • "an M4 set with an M6 middle car."

I've seen that one enough times in the month of railfanning I pulled off last month that I got bored of seeing it.

  • "as this is the New Haven Line, where overhead AC Catenary provides the traction power"

Except from west of pelham though, which is 3rd rail.

Only mentioned since that, in part, might throw some less knowledgeable people off.

  • yes, absolutely true - and although its never happened in revenue service the ACMUs made it here on their farewell excursion and a train of M7As came here once on a different FRN excursion.

  • I've seen photos from the ACMU farewell trip taken at Mt. Vernon East. That must have been cool in its own respect. Too bad I have a bad habit of missing the interesting farewell trips for particular pieces of equipment about to hit retirement. ~_~
