My six grade class actually visited a mock control room for a science field trip, we worked it perfect, then a group of college kids came in and causes a fake meltdown.
You'd think those alarms would sond like a bunch of buzzers, bells, and sirens. I don't see how a few beeps and a small dinging bell would create any concern.
@pollyisagoodbird It's not about creating concern so much as allowing operators to know what the top tier items are. One of the big problems at TMI2 was the sheer volume of alarms made it difficult for operators to prioritize. Control room alarms are now set up in a "Worst, First" sort of arrangement.
@pollyisagoodbird Of course. Please consider that all nuke plants in the USA are "Old" as none have been built since the 80s. That being said: the NRC makes sure everyone conforms to the same set of regulations and that includes how the alarms work.
wow that is a really crappy set of alarm sounds. the plant i work at has like 7 or 8 alarms that haunt your nightmares. those alarms sound almost pleasant
@pollyisagoodbird Yea, i saw it when I was a kid (like 12) (and parts of it as an adult). but my dad explained to me how nuclear power worked and got me interested in it. fast forward a decade and i'm a nuclear engineer
@pollyisagoodbird If you have permission you can record a simulator, generally speaking, but I don't think cameras are allowed in a real control room.

@pollyisagoodbird There are no regulations against it. I posted a video response to this video that demonstrates a large break loss of coolant accident at the plant I operate.
what is this type of reactor?? ;OO

@Manadox97 Well half the fun of a simulator is "breaking" it.

Fascinating! The people standing in the room should have clapped to the beat.

One presumes it doesn't matter /what/ the alarm sounds like so long as it's distinct and audible, which this certainly seems to be.

@RingshadowCat Would old power plants now have those kinds of alarm sistems today?

@RingshadowCat well, they DO replace parts now and again so you have a old-new hybrid kinda thing goin on.

what are they training for? the "it's gona blow, RUN!!" simulation"?
iceass01 8 months ago
@iceass01 They aren't, those are Operators showing the students of my class what it's like when there's a reactor trip.

@enthalpy any chance you could record a simulated reactor trip and post it, or would that be against regulations?
