@simplymrfingers994 They're doing it with something called rhythm, not much of that on early bandstand days. Didn't get it until they had competition from Soul Train.
@luvureally For starters, why don't you watch the original Contours do it, "Do You Love Me" (Live 1963), or James Brown, at least as far as the mashed potatoes is concerned. 2nd, I don't know how old you are, but back in those days, that type of dancing was a little stiff, compared to how it was REALLY being done.
@simplymrfingers994 They were confined to a very small area and many Black musicians t.v. performances were very tame when compared to live performances. Contours were known for their energetic live performances which included splits they were known as the wildest dancers at Motown.
@luvureally I know, and I do understand that, but the lead singer has enough to do the "mashed potatoes correctly, at least, if he's gonna be tame doing it. By the way, are you aware that these fellas here, which include young Dennis Edwards are not the entirely the original members? And if you've watched the "Live 1963" video, the leader isn't the same guy either, who really could cut up.
This song has the WOW feature on my personal "Face-to-Face" on proposed K5DR. When I first heard this on KQV, Pittsburgh. . .it was . ."W-O-W - what was that great song?" It was soooo good, bought 2 copies on the Gordy label, and brought it to the UK. . . .and nobody at the time (Dec '63) wanted to listen to it. . .'til Radio Caroline played it. Great sound. Thanks for posting this great sound.
Does anyone notice that former temptation, Dennis Edwards is in this lineup in the middle of the 3 backup guys? Freakin crazy seeing him with a process haha. I'm only used to seeing him with an Afro. Great stuff!
AWESOME!!!! Dennis Edwards left the Contours and joined the Temptations..he's all in the backgound, not dispaying his full potiential. Oh but when he got with the Temps...it was on and poppin'.......
@katjcfl1964 We love Dennis! What a great talent. He joined the Tempts at the same time Cindy Birdsong joined the Supremes. Both great additions to 2 great Motown groups. Dennis was certainly a diamond in the rough. Handsome dude, too!
What kind of "twisting and mashed potatoes" was the lead singer doing? The kids on American Bandstand were doing it better than that.
