Very VERY good. 8+ Mach diamonds, nearly complete combustion- nice blue flame. This makes me think LOX or LNO2 as an oxidizer. I'd bet on LOX, though I'm not 100% sure. I'd bet that motor is capable of a couple thousand pounds of thrust.
thats an impressive engine.. what was the thrust output? psi of fuel and rate the your pump had to operate? how much fuel does a rig like this burn per minute? need a shop geek? a scientist or technician's assistant's assistant? shop janitor? shop janitor's assistant? kudos guys, it really was a great video. ive never seen such a perfectly focused engine. do you guys make solid rocket fuel too? and ever use nitrous oxide mixtures?
@PLxFTW yea if you notice from the beginning its a pool of water, check out the ripples just as it starts up. But yea it would have been cool if this thing produced water, but then that would make it a LOX/H2O2(Hydrogen Peroxide) powered engine, not LOX/CH4O(Methanol) engine.
why are we even bothering with chemicals? i mean exhaust velocities of 3 km/s aren't gonna get us anywhere, and a take-of-mass / payload ratio of 1/25 for GTO is just ridiculous.
@monimstarfox It's called auto-exposure. The flame is much brighter than the ambient light, and hence the camera automatically adjusts the exposure to accommodate.
i would totally play around with it like a candle.. you know quickly putting your finger in and then out again ^^ but i think you would get a nasty burn by that flame xD
I don't think John Carmack has to worry about getting his money back...he basically invented first person shooters. His gaming company has sold millions upon millions of copies of games since the 80's...he's simply putting it back into science man!
Why do you wish to discourage people that might show us how we have been doing it wrong? 20 mil might go a long way in the right hands..... I can only hope if any beings got a glimpse at carl sagan's voyager plaques that they come back in 20 years because if they came around recently they surely saw us as idiots.
Advantage of liquids at all? Or over cryogenic fuel? Liquid hydrogen is hard to store. That in some instances prevents its use, or makes it less attractive. Smaller craft, long storage, lower technical ability, etc.
Liquids as a whole are much more efficient than solids. They are often the better choice. But not always the best. All three: solids, hybrids, and liquids have a place and time where they are best.
Pretty sure this is a mono-prop motor. One tank instead of two, and non-cryogenic. Big advantage over two cryo-tanks. Biggest drawback is storing high test H2O2. It can be nasty stuff.
Yeah alcohol and the O's. Not sure how reliable cryogenic O2 is going to be for use on the moon or after long storage - they may have to go with more funky mixes at some point, no more pretty flames :)
...I want one...
