I remember when this happened. I was a recruit that year (my senior year of hs) and so I was at the practice the day before I did this thinking "there's no way in hell they're going to do this tomorrow. They must just be messing around", and sure enough they did it :D

however, i assume its because thats where the usc (red) players were at on the sidelines so the defense prob assumed he was joining them as opposed to lining up..
