Though I do like a few songs on this album, I really missed Grace Slick. This band was never the same for me without her, Grace Slick is and always will be a legend in my eyes.
if i remember correctly, mutt lange only produced a couple of songs on this album, he didnt produce the whole album....point is still taken absolutely....
@Rudemanlan actually, it doesnt suck. Why such defense of such pap ?? Do you hear me slagging the mighty Floyd, or Zep, or the Who, or Steely Dan, or the Eagles ? Fuk U, like really. Go play "we built this city" on your cassette over & over. Or is that an 8-track ?? hahaha
@Rudemanlan try bringing up "we built this city" in serious rock circles.....you'll get laughed out of the room !! That song SINGLEHANDEDLY ruined the Starship. Plus, and I cant wait for you to refute this, many Starship members quit and wanted NO part of that schlock...so fuck off with your 80's "cover" bands !!
Its nice you dispute (not) the fact that a catchy, radio-friendly ditty can RUIN a band sometimes, EVEN IF IT SELLS TONNAGE AT THE TIME. Is it worth it in the long run ?? And those "chicks" you speak of ARE flavor-of-the-month types, who move-on to the next cool thing. AC/DC are a good example of not selling out (like Foreigner or the Cars), and look at their extensive career. Message here ? DONT try to appeal to "the chicks" ! They'll be onto something else in no time flat !!
@Rudemanlan Finally, please dont go on about how long a career they had. Songs like "Jane" and other late 70's/early 80's stuff had SUBSTANCE....fans bought those records for the quality. They werent soley love ballads and pop fluff. Take the time to research how utterly LOATHED a ditty like "we built this city..." is. It is literaly MOCKED by those serious about music. This was NOT occurring in the late 70's and early 80's stuff !!!
(cont) they started the "waiting for a girl like you" and "i want to know what love is" crap they lost their devoted, loyal audience. I guess the artist(s) are faced with big money for a short time, or stay true to their roots....many sadly choose the former !! PS If you think "Sara"-style listeners will remain loyal to a group, buying subsequent releases, you are sadly misguided !!
@Rudemanlan I will NOT dispute the fact "knee deep...." sold a lot. My point is that songs like "we built this city", "nothins gonna stop us now", etc, are "flavor of the month songs. Yes, the public will enjoy them AT THE TIME, but will not stay loyal, soon they are on to something else. This happened to the Cars, with fluff like "you might think", big at the time, but those listeners are soon on to something else. It even occurred with Foreigner. HUGE in the late 70's, when they ...
Great song from the album "LOVE AMONG THE CANNIBALS"(1989). In fact, this song souds like DEF LEPPARD Hysteria era, but anyway it´s a good tune! Long live AOR!
I asked Mickey (Thomas) recently what the hell he meant by "bad is better than the burn", and he replied: Selling fewer records without Paul Kanter and Grace Slick is better than getting "burned" by them on royalties, which DID occurr ! Great meaning, when one thinks about it !
I remember the first time I listened to this album years ago.... I couldn't believe how good it was and I don't understand why it was never popular....
Great oldies, Real rock and Roll song. It makes me sad that this band really fell by the wasteside this album was what my dad made me listen to growing up, it brings back good memories keep jefferson starship alive.
Dont get me wrong....ME ??? I still like the song, but the general public just weren't buying....Night Ranger (remember them ?) were very similar...very catchy songs, but caught in the middle between heavy and light music. When that occurrs, the record-buying fans just arent there !!!
if this had young "prettyboys" in its group, a la Def Leppard, it would have sold TONNAGE. Sad fact is, nobody gave a shit about Mickey Thomas, not the big record-buying public (teens and young adults). What REALLY did this group in? And why was this album virtually ignored? Four, and two years prior to this, they released "We built this city" and "Nothings gonna stop us now". THAT is what did them in. Loyal fans do not stick around after that pap. And thats not opinion...it's fact !!!
"We built this city" is not my thing, but the band did very well out of it, surely? It was a song of its time. Starship/Jef/Airplane span a wide range of styles. Embrace them if you can.
I hear you on the.. lightweight.. nature of this type of song, but even Def Leppard used to be a real rock band when they started.
This is one of my favorites from their 1989 album. It's like Def Leppard and Bryan Adams singing in the background vocals with Starship and lead singer Mickey Thomas when you hear it. That hanging with the guys kind of song singing those big anthemic choruses good and loud! Good song to pair with It's Not Enough.

Tremendous group. Great songs!! The vocals are awesome. Up there alongside Journey, Foreigner, Haywire, Loverboy, Toto etc. When I find the right vocalist this is definitely some of the stuff we will be doing!
@adrenalized86 dude how perfect your words are!!!! I always love this song when I heard it first time, it was my mobile ring in 2011 and it'll be in 2012..heh
...except that Mutt Lange didn't produce it. Mike Shipley produced this song and a few others from Starship's album. I am this huge Mike Shipley fan--like anything he has produced or mixed for artists. Shipley produced Def Leppard's Adrenalize album. He's more of a mixer, but you know that intersection like rock sound he does on the Mutt Lange songs for Def Leppard and on his own with other bands and artists! ALways have followed his stuff for years!
Are there any videos of the band playing live the songs from this album? I can't seem to find them anywhere. I would love to see mickey thomas sing these songs live.

I'm a fan of this album too. I like this song the best but also like "I'll be there for you". It was used at the end of the movie "Gross Anatomy". The song that is most Def like is "I didn't mean to stay all night" The harmonies are a dead giveaway.
Is bad better than the burn? At this point, I think.. I don't know. I'm both.
