Accardo does not play other piece well as compared to Menuhin, Oistrakh and Heifetz. but talking about Paganini's, I always believe that Accardo intepret the best. :)
Accardo made a good living playing Paganini. He plays in good taste & with a clean, beautiful tone. It's definitely not my favorite version, but I keep returning to it for its academic value. My favorite versions are of Heifetz, Rabin, & Ricci. Accardo did a fabulous job recording the 6 Paganini concerti & the variations on God Save The King. His version of the Caprices contains many interesting features & has enhanced the violin repertoire. If I can describe Accardo in 1 word-- elegant.
Rabin, Mintz, Heifetz, Majeske, Zehetmair, Kavakos, Midori, and FP Zimmermann...and even Ehnes bring much more consistiency to this caprice...I mean, c'mon, how can the double-stops be so out of tune?
neanche a me piace Uto Ughi.
I agree Accardo is a Paganini expert because he includes so many Paganini's music in his repertoire. However, please don't forget another Italian violinist, Ruggerio Ricci. I believe he had played every Paganini's work known to his days(except concerto #3 & 5). I was fortunate having listen both of them in live concerts and recitals. Although Accardo could play clearer (Ricci older by 22 years), I love Ricci more because he is more passionate and colorful.
Mistake: Ricci did not play too much works for violin and guitar.
Regarding the most difficult Paganini, I recommend hearing "la campanella" played by Nathan Milstein. He ran the fastest and smoothest in the rapid double stopping passage. I don't think Kogan or Heifetz could do better.
When you get up to the level of Ricci, it is hard to keep perfect clarity and tone. One or two violinists may have played a part of a piece better here and there but Ricci is consistently the most breathtaking and passionate Paganini interpreter ever. Oh yes, that includes better than Heifetz too.
@FlashyCat2008 : Ricci is incredible. And not to put him down or anything, but have you ever heard Leonid Kogan play any of Paganini's pieces? He is the best in my opinion, but that's just me. Then again, anyone that can play these pieces at such levels is certainly not someone to be down talked.
Caprice 24 can be played as a vituose piece or a very emotional one. I like very much Accardo balanced reading of the piece. It is faboulous. The first place I would give to Menuhin, in a video no longer avaiable on youtube. But it is a personal choice.
Ole Bull, Norwegian violin virtuoso went to see Paganini plays like everibody that time, and he said..."Well, to understand Paganini you may first understand the Italian coloratura "...Mr.Accardo had performed the Paganini Concerto per Violino #3 I didn't found it on youtube !
By the way, Gidon Kremer plays Paganini like an Italian...and so, many others.
I was reading through these comments and was amazed at how right crazy77town was while vagabonda1982 was busy being so profoundly wrong. crazy77town is the man
accardo is slower but more clear..Did you meet Paganini? who tell you that this sheets was played very speed? It's like the people tell you : you must use a 4.4 big size violin..and not 3-4 ...
this instrument can be played in many different ways...it's a free expression oh the feelings and emotions,,i love the original interpretation.. many violinist try to make a technical demonstration.. it's sad.
look, if you are a grown up person and you can play with a 3/4 violin size it's ok for me....I am 190cm and i cannot play on such a small field...furthermore, i doubt you are gonna have the kind of sound you have to with a small field..
then, i agree about the freedom of expression in music but not on paganini!! Good or bad, paganini was thinking too much about himself and he was writing just to show himself that noone else could play what he could, and this is why it's just high level exercises
everybody knows except you apparently what paganini was as a man, and a player. I doubt that he would be that democratic to negotiate with anyone about the style of his music and the interpretation.. he wrote to sound like that, speedy and aggressive, so for me if someone is not able to play paganini fast, aggressive and clear he should better keep on with kreutzer and dont.
@vagabonda1982 Actually, it is said that Paganini created his 24 caprices for his students to improve their technical ability. But, different strokes for different folks.
If an interpretation in its whole is good, it may be better than a devils play BECAUSE it is another thing and a new creation. Or is slow or .. better: lovely eval??.
@netuser1707 , i fully respect that this is another creation and music is all about new creations and different opinions, but this especially sounds to me something like practising in order to clear up the difficult spots....
does anyone know what QUASI PRESTO means?? you dont need to be italian to know...maybe i didnt meet paganini himself but at last he wrote how he want his music to be played...
I think what misterbg1 means by "easy" is that it's just easier . It's as if there were 2 mountains. one was Mt.Everest and the other was K2 mountain. K2 isn't short, it's just shorter compared to Mt.Everest. Just because it's shorter doesn't mean it's the shortest right?
@vagabonda1982 If you play guitar, it is really easy (I do). But I suspect, that there is a huge difference in difficulty level between guitar and violin ;)
Guitar is soooo much easier than the violin itself; muscle memory, bowing style, which part of the bow, how loud, how soft, what kind of fingerings you need, how you need to play certain notes, how long...
@kubap66 I would however, love to see Dablooder provide us with a violinist that can play John Williams' interpretation of Asturias on a violin. That is of course seeing as guitar is soooooooo much easier than violin. :)
@Dablooder To say the guitar is easier to play than the violin, is an absurdly ignorant statement. Any respectable musician should know that. Each and every instrument in the world has its own merits and technicalities that must be mastered. Comparing any two is stupid. And in regard to the things you were listing off. They all apply to the guitar as well, apart from the bow specifics. To add to your ridiculous list of muscle memory, note interpretation and fingering would be easy for guitar.
Marvelous --in some ways better than any other interpretation I've ever heard. Especially the miserably difficult passage from 1:25-1:40. Accardo nails it!
1:25 - 1:40 ... is the easiest passage in the caprice. its just a bunch of chromatic scales and then easy arpegios. the only thing that is easier then that variation is the original theme.
I hope you understand i did not say the passage is "easy" i said i find it easier then any other passage in the piece. The theme is easier then it. but certainly not any other variation is easier, arguably the the 1st variation, but i think they are on the same level.
... are you calling paganini caprice no 24 easy? this piece is considered pretty much as one of the MOST difficult violin pieces ever written. If you call this easy, i would like to see you play it.
Can anyone tell me how this artist approached the 4th Caprice? There a youtube video out there? It's my fave of the capricci and I'm on the market for a 24 caprices cd. I hear his is definitive but I'd be disappointed if the 4th one wasn't played like I like it. With enough emotion to make a stone burst into tears and time seem to stand still.
@man55man I find all this kind of comments very naive, it all depends on what the listener is searching. Maybe you like more the style and cleanness of Accardo, or the passion that Heifetz puts on his interpretations. Maybe you don't think it's as I say, but the other way.
Anyways, thanks for the upload Angus; for sure this is a great recording.

Many people simply do not know of the great artistry of Accardo. These videos should help. Sweet sound, masterful technique and a style in the grandest manner.

Plus, Heifetz did a lot of editing to his. This interpretation is one of the best complete 24th caprice by Paganini

Scusate...

I agree, but this is the closet to it I have EVER heard. Even more than Perlmans!

Many people simply do not know of the great artistry of Accardo. These videos should help. Sweet sound, masterful technique and a style in the grandest manner.

Grazie umegghju.... Avevi ragione........
L'ho conosciuto (Accardo) a Parma 20 anni fa;
Straordinaria persona... umile e scherzoso.......
