I never listened to a lot of Otis Redding, but thanks to Kanye West & Jay-Z I now know about this amazing song. They did not ruin it. They paid homage. It is a great song and so is this. Stop The Hate, Enjoy The Music.
Even in death, Otis Redding's talent succeeds all others. Congrats to Jay-z and Kanye West on their Grammy win and for showing great honor in doing justice to an Otis Redding sample. :)
If only more men took this advice OH how there would be so many less problems in this world! Tenderness = Compassion, helping your love when she is in NEED!!!
Thanks for the memories! My old band played this in '68. I had a ball. Other songs on our list were "Fire" by Hendrix, and even "Mustang Sally". I just wish we had a recorder then!
love the jay z and kayne watch the throne of course but i've been listening to otis for a long time, he is truly iconic and how totally cool that jay z and kayne can turn a whole new generation on to this music! don't just stop with this song, check all of his legendary tunes, brilliance!
People dont get mad this is a great song and I knew about it b/c my parents kept the radio on classic R&B during long road trips. Hip Hop has been sampling since 1975 when DJ Kool Herc decided to use two copies of give it up and turn it loose by James Brown to create a longer break beat thus break dancing. Hip Hop! (Please dont lecture me with all the detail of the history of Hip Hop I get it I am trying to prove a point that ppl need to stop hating sampling).
Thanks to Otis Redding and everyone listening to this song. I appreciate that so many people listen to Otis Redding and get joy from his music, no matter how they found out about it & I'm glad so many people love and respect the classic and legendary Otis Redding songs, specifically this magnificent one. Thanks for listening and commenting, and request a song you would like be the post.
@Launchballer thumbs up for the J and Kanye comment althought I don't know what whitespace is but it sounds like a hot topic in todays sociopolitical climate (This means it sounds racist yall) (joke)
Not funny. After the song, there's a tremendous amount of "empty space" at the end where nothing's audible which is called whitespace. It's a conjectural term, which means I can't think of one so I made one up - if you can think of a better term I'll be obliged.
People need to stop being so fucking ignorant. Obviously the original song holds more creativity and soul than the sample by Jay-Z and Kanye, but if you're going to consider yourself cultured enough to criticize what they did you clearly have a narrow minded approach to music. It's called sampling and it's about reinventing a groove to create interesting rhythms and phrases. The only person who has done this song a disservice is that woman bashing, piss weak hack Chris Brown.
You know what? Jay Z and Kanye didnt do a bad thing... they did everybody watching this a great service by introducing this beautiful soul music to hip hop fans worldwide
They ruined it, they reduced it from a beautiful piece of soul heaven into a few high-pitched squeals and a load of scat. If you have nothing decent to say, scram and don't say anything.
@Launchballer without kanye and jay z, the exposure to this song would be a lot less. sure nothing beats the original, but you have to give credit where credit is due. instead of hating, be happy for the number people who love this song because of the popularity of "otis". try to walk in kanye's shoes, all he wanted to do is pay tribute to these great artists that no longer get exposure and it's cynics like you who hate him for it. stop the hate, appreciate. peace.
@leepipesateneo i agree whit what you said, although i cant stand Kanye West or the track "Otis", i think i coulda done alot better than he did with this track !!!
@TheUncleBungle you know what they say, you can't please everybody. the only thing that can be kept constant is that you enjoyed what you made and hope that people enjoy what you made as well. who knows, maybe when you have the time or effort you could try to remake this track and pay proper respect to it in the way you think it deserves.
@leepipesateneo see, thing is, it cant be done anytime soon, due to "Otis" being out there, i would love to do it, and one day i probably will, but i'm no beat biter, and i'm certainly not gonna bite Kanye West :/ dont get it me wrong, i like the beat for Otis, but its just sections of this, i also think what they talked about was too outdated and a little insulting, considering the current economical climate of the world !! :/
@TheUncleBungle wasn't my intention, haha. but if you could do it, prove me wrong. actions speak louder than words. send me a link when you finish. no matter how the song turns out, my respect for you will multiply x10 just for the effort :D
@OldTunes20....Your opinion....I'm not judging Chirs on what he's done (God's job not mine), I'm listening to the music, melody, and their differences...As I said Otis is definitely the classic....
I'm in my early 20s, and I swear I shouldn't have been born in the 80s. I remember hearing this song on Amen, and seeing Hope Clarke dancing to it. Renewed my love for Otis. I love the oldies. This is music that spoke to you. Sangggg Otis. Try a little tenderness. I love Jay and Ye, but this is one you shouldn't touch. Much respect b/c they brought Otis to the forefront once again. He's gone but never forgotten.
@Vining212 your like, so deep man, your 18, and like THIS music?? good on you bro, can you like, give me lessons on music or something? i feel i could learn from you :)
@Harlemgurl106 Otis respected women beyond the standards of 99% of men today, Chris Brown didn't come close to a damn thing Otis did. Voice is one thing, but Otis had soul behind his, which is a whole lot more than Chris Brown's woman-abusing ass could ever say for himself.
@OldTunes20 Preach! Chris Brown is a punk bitch in the gutter, as is any "man" who lays his hands on a woman and Otis Redding is a legend standing on Olympus. Chris Brown couldn't dream of touching his ass with his whack track.
Now THIS is the shit. I love Jay Z, but him and Kanye West spit in Otis Redding Face when they used this song. Blasphemy man, absolute blasphemy. This loveliness had nothin to do with the sell-out lyrics Kanye west added in.

@louifnfs search "ray noble orchestra try a little tenderness" on the youtube search bar, song was made in 1932.
bing crosby and ruth etting then did their own version of this song in 1933.
when otis redding heard the 1933 version by crosby and etting, he made his 1966 version of it and the rest they say is history.
is this enough proof for you?
