  • That crowd went into full throat after he passed the 50..I remember this game very well..That no name Bengals defence was tough!!

  • i was kid loved real bengals

  • I shook that man's hand about 45 seconds ago

  • I always liked sam wyche, you see how much bill walsh liked and cared for him at the end of the game " I love ya" just pure respect for a good coach. Today guys give the shrug and walk off.

  • The high water mark of our franchise. One day we'll go all the way. Dan LeFevour will lead us to the promised land!

  • lol @VCM,i didn't say that,i was just repeating what a bengal fan said, then made a joke out of it.

  • RIP Merlin Olsen

  • Great game, Bengals probably would have won if Boomer Esiason didn't play the game with a bad shoulder. Boomer just didn't have his normal zip on the ball.

  • Dick Enberg was the best, is still the best, and always will be the best. Thanks for the post. It was my favorite call of his and Merlin Olsen (RIP).

  • if the bengals offense could of gotten more then just three field goals like a touchdown and two field goals along with this touchdown they would have won but when only your special teams can get in the endzone you didnt play well enough to win. The Bengals played well enough to not lose. they didnt play well enough to win

  • R.I.P. Merlon Olson, it was a pleasure listening to you do the games you did...

  • this guy was the answer for mike francessas show on wfan to win the trip to the superbowl this year 2010

  • @soulsupremeone haha I wasn't even close, i thought it was a running back

  • that sidney guy must be fast, he was closing in in a hurry

  • @kurbster26 I don't think that was Harry Sydney, I think it was Terry Greer who caught up to him. Nevertheless, yes, he closed fast.

  • I went to Fuman with Stanford. What a class act!

  • Notice how he exploded right through the hole and ran straight up the field. Guys today would just dance around.

  • LOOK OUT!

  • I yelled my head off at that play.

  • the bengals had the better team in both those super bowls, they just didnt play good enough to win

  • Are you really that stupid to believe the Bengals were better?

  • thats my belief idiot not yours

  • the bengals had the better team in both those super bowls

its allright...i remember my first beer

  • @TheGatorfan93 if they had the better team, then they would've won both those games.

  • @vcrm1 TheGatorfan93 is absolutely right, if the Bengals had the better team they would have won both of their Super Bowls. We can always say "should've" but that doesn't count. Yes they "should've" won both of them, but they didn't, so they aren't the better team either time. Just like the 1990 Oakland Athletics weren't the better team in MLB , as the Cincinnati Reds swept them 4-0 in the World Series. Many say A's were better, but like TheGatorfan93 post, if they were better they'd won.

  • My top 3 "Holy S**t" plays in SB history (as in, 'Jesus, this team could actually win the game!'):

    1. Helmet Catch - Giants/Pats

    2. Delhomme to Muhammed - Panthers/Pats

    3. Stanford Jennings - Bengals/49ers

-Helmet Catch #1 cause they actually DID win

-Muhammed bomb #2 cause it was late in the game and the play came out of nowhere

-Jennings cause like the Pats in 07, the 49ers were invincible in Super Bowls back then, no one thought Wyche's Bengals had a chance

  • This kickoff returns still gives me chills like the game was yesterday. This game is one of the best ever!! I am a Bengals fan, so this super bowl was crushing. Only :34 seconds away. But I will give it to Montana, what a great team!!

  • I was 8 years old...and flying around my grandma's house. You see, I am Ickey Woods' nephew by marriage (his wife Chandra is my late dad's baby sister). We really thought they might beat the big bad 49ers. Except for my dad. He told me, "you watch, 49ers gonna score in the last minute."

When Taylor caught the pass, my grandfather and dad just half-smiled and looked at me. Still an absolutely great game though. My uncle never really dwelled on it though...funny how that works sometimes

  • that was a great year , I think everyone in Ohio was doing the Ickey shuffle . so what's Uncle Elbert up to these days

  • He's just raising his last two boys basically...between that and his women's team the Sizzle, and golf, that's basically the life. He'll make the occasional appearance here and there. Nice to be a celebrity somewhere nearly 20 years after you're done playing...

  • Stanford jennings and ickey woods. two of the best jheri curls in nfl history. gotta love the 80's

  • The best part is Stanford Jennings was full speed to the 1 inch line - in today's game some idiot would have been hot dogging it around the 10 yard line and gotten tripped up

  • @pinhead22

Wrong, the best part (although not shown) was his luxurious Gheri Curl under that helmet.....and I'm a Bengals fan.

  • @LastDom

Ha Ha - my friend had this game recorded on VHS, and I ALWAYS remembered that Gheri Curl.....

  • I don't think this is the best SB, but it's in my top 5. Damn great game.

  • This is the single most greatest play in the history of the Cincinnati Bengals.

  • I agree. It looked like they were going to win the Super Bowl. But then ... Joe Montana... !!! That was a great call by Dick Enberg. That was also the last game that Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen called together.

  • Also, notice the incredible effort by Sydney to catch Jennings. - A lot like Ben Watson running down Champ Bailey. All heart and effort.

  • Great game, and a great call by one of the best broadcasters all of all time, love Dick Enbergs call on this one.

  • Great game. Maybe the greatest ever. Everyone in the stadium, at home,- anyone watching,& the fans of both teams knew,- that Montana n tha Niners were not going to be stopped on the final drive. I'm a huge Niner fan, & I actually felt bad for the Bengals & they're coach.

  • me 2 I was devestated , that was definately our year!

  • Fuck i wish they won i hate 49ers they never lost great one

  • my heart still beats fast off of this super bowl, the best I've ever saw

  • my daddy is close friends with stanford jennings and his brother keith jennings. my daddy is way faster then stanford jennings and keith.

  • Hey, you know what. Just shut up and give us the brief moment of joy that we deserve. We get this moment........you get the super bowl.

  • you shut up man

  • he fast

  • DAMM, I can't believe this is almost 20 years ago. I feel old now lol. This was one of the greatest superbowls and this play helped the cause also.

  • I wish you hadn't said that! Now I feel Old!

  • My previous comment was to meathead

  • Dick Enberg " OH MY!!" the best ever !

  • Yes, if you look at a ton of old clips with Dick Enberg, "Oh My!" has been a good friend to Dr. Enberg. "Hello Friends" by Jim Nantz came very late in his career, sometime in the 2000s (maybe about 2004, I think, Nantz's 19th year with CBS when Nantz became the lead NFL announcer). If you watch the CBS NFL recaps, I think Nantz has given up on "Hello Friends." I think Dave Ward, KTRK-TV Houston news anchor came up with the "Hello Friends" line first!

  • im watchin this because i remember this game like yesterday, hope we get back to this game again one day!!!

  • Ha! As a Niner fan, I loved this game! The Bengals felt they were on top of the world after that play, only to come crashing back to earth when the Niners scored on their next possession in only three plays. Everytime the Bengals did something in this game, the Niners ALWAYS answered back.

  • It always helps when the opponent drops an interception in the endzone, now doesn't it?

  • Burn in hell :D

  • It's odd, teams which usually score kick returns in a Superbowl tend to lose for some reason. -Is there some unknown curse to this?

  • I don't know, but that is weird. Here's who returned kickoffs for TDs in the Big Game...

Fulton Walker, Miami, XVII, lost 27-17

Stanford Jennings, Cincinnati, XXIII, lost 20-16

Andre Coleman, San Diego, XXIX, lost 49-26

Desmond Howard, Green Bay, XXXI, won 35-21

Tim Dwight, Atlanta, XXXIII, lost 34-19

Ron Dixon, N.Y. Giants, XXXV, lost 34-7

Jermaine Lewis, Baltimore, XXXV, won 34-7

Devin Hester, Chicago, XLI, lost 29-17

Teams who return a kickoff for a TD in the Super Bowl are 2-6.

  • What's funny is I was about...8 years old when this game was played. Ickey Woods is my uncle by marriage (he's married to my aunt Chandra). My dad absolutely NAILED this ending...we're getting ready to head to my grandmother's house and he says, "Montana's gonna hit that other receiver with less than a minute to beat them. You watch." Absolutely dead on...and i'm still pissed to this day (even as a Raiders fan)

  • Gotta love Dick Enberg "oh my." Here. Classic broadcaster

  • As a Furman alum, this was one of the greatest moments in pro football history for me...Sam Wyche and Stanford Jennings, who scored late for the Furman Paladins in "Cock Shock '82" as FU defeated the Gamecocks in Columbia 28-23. Sam was FU qb when I was at Furman.

  • Upset in the making? NAW, we know how this Super Bowl ended, Montana to Taylor...yeah, you remember:-)

Now, the NY Giants beating the New England Patriots? Yep, THAT was an upset indeed:-D

  • enberg is the best

    OH MY!!

  • Perhaps the single greatest moment in Bengals' history. It's really too bad they couldn't hang on in this classic. I still get chills watching this though. "He can't! Touchdown Cincinnati! OH MY!!" What a call.

  • I like the Bengals radio version because you can hear one of the announcers yelling "GO STANFORD GO!!" like any fan would in that situation.

  • man, i was very little and my dad flipped out when this happend and scared the hell out of me. too bad we lose to the 49ers almost all the fucking time GRRRR. well i have no doubt we will stick it to the nfl next year.

  • man, this is not super bowl XXXIII

    its super bowl XXIII...

  • can you post the whole super bowl? (make sure it's hard to find like this clip, 49er made it too easy)

  • There was a guy that tryed that about 2 years ago, but he was thrown out the window.

Personally, I'm (pleasantly) surprised that hasn't happened to WIICTVFan, who uploaded all four "Steel Curtain" Pittsburgh Super Bowls.

  • Also too bad this isn't superbowl XXXIII. It's superbowl XXXIV

  • actually it is super bowl XXII(23)

  • XXIII(23), this is what i meant

  • No its Super Bowl XXIII in January 1989.

  • shame we lost...go bengals

  • did you get this on NFL Classics or something?

  • I think so. They left a lot out of this one on NFL Network for some reason. In fact, that (and the fact my dad has the original NBC telecast on tape) is why I didn't tape it there.

  • Probably because NFL Network has other programming planned, so they took out what they deemed "insignificant" to fit it into its time slot. Or something like that. If you want to garner ratings, fair enough, but I'd rather see the ENTIRE game.

  • Wow,i love this, cant believe we didnt win though

  • Stanford Jennings was a legend at my Alma Mater which is Summerville High School home of the worlds winningest head coach.

  • its too bad that they didnt win

  • the only towntown we scored in that super bowl lol

  • Same but it makes me mad that we lost

  • I remember watching this game. really brings back memories.

  • Me too. Here in Britain I remember they had a commercial break while it happened! That mistake never happened again of course!
