  • @michaelteter:

Well, I guess that's just too bad for you then, isn't it?

    Sincerely,

The Saxophonist Who Actually Played The Tenor Solo, Joel Frahm.

  • I'm completely in love with her musical expression. It's utterly genuine, and it is the highest representation of modern vocal jazz. The only way I could improve on this would be to bring back Michael Brecker for the tenor solo...

  • I'm completely in love with her musical expression. It's utterly genuine, and it is the highest representation of modern vocal jazz.

  • This is OK, but she seems so affected, maybe it's the pressure of the venue. I still prefer Astrud Gilberto's version--where Monheit tries too many mood shifts and nuances Astrud just gives you the continuous innocence of true love. But I am eager to hear the Flora Purim and Willie Bobo renditions recommended earlier here.

  • @Canal138 I agree completely. Too many young singers today seem to resort to "vocal pyrotechnics," inordinate attention to stage presence, make-up, and clothing than singing a song simply, but beautifully. She strikes me as more of a theatrical singer than a jazz baby.

  • @pauldershem And being a "jazz baby" is different from merely "jazzing up" a bossa nova song. Viewing the vid again, I do hear her talent more than b4--but is it augmented or cheapened by the frills, whether the way she funkifies some of the phrasing, strays an already paradoxical song (I'd let you go away / If you'd take me with you) into extraneous echos, pats her breasts, perms her eyelashes, or pushes back a wave of her hair. But there is an inspired jazz-baby moment at 4:37.

  • She's beautiful, sassy and a fantastic singer... Goosebumps time!!!

  • who would dislike that for fuck's sake??

  • When you hear Jane Monheit you almost take for granted his incomparable vocal technique .. because you are struck by a so unique and original interpretation that touches all the registers of the human soul ... and her incredible technique passes in second floor

  • For me and for all Brazilians, listening this song like this, is the same that see someone making shit on Jobim´s Head!

  • @maiararbelli Certo. Jane Monheit tem uma linda voz, mas este é arranjo prá gringa. Jeito brasileiro não tem nenhum.

  • Tho I adore Jane, her colorful, sweet and lyrical voice, her sultry persona and her humble finish to this tune, no one will quite capture this tune like either Flora Purim or Willie Bobo. Flora's is dreamy and evocative and Willie's...well you'll just have to listen to his version and use your own adjectives - it escapes me how to describe Willie. Vibraphone seems to pair with this Jobim tune, Dindi. Tempo must be slow.

  • Love, love this song. It's beautiful.

  • Beautiful improv at 4:22. I'm not even a jazz fan and absolutely love this whole performance.

  • @richmonksgtr You mean at 4:37!

  • @richmonksgtr You mean at 4:37! (4:22 is rather ordinary.)

  • AMAZING LADY, INCREDIBLE TALENT!

  • Finally! Done with raw sensuality instead of pretentious corn.......Bellissima!

  • wooow me encanta esta mujer!!! tiene una voz tan dulce que hace viajar a un mundo romanticista!!! wooow!!!

  • This is unbelievable! Gorgeous.

  • PERFECT!

  • Incredible woman and singer.....

  • Sultry is exactly the word to describe her... her voice is nothing short of phenomenal... pheromones for the ears... irresistible... it doesn't hurt that she's VERY easy on the eyes, too...

  • I've never heard this song sung quite so beautifully. This is gorgeous.

  • @Aviva2121 I agree!
