Actually... the funny part is, that black smoke is possibly the most environmentally responsible part about it. Black smoke is visible, so it gets a bad wrap from people as "pollution", but it's actually unburnt carbon. Some of that carbon may remain in elemental form for a long period of time. As long as it's not reacted with oxygen, it has not formed Carbon Dioxide. So, as ugly as it is, black smoke is not the culprit.
@Nimrodgtr12 well theres time for a quick tea break between starting it and waiting for it to warm up and i think it was around 0 possibly a little colder.
@Nimrodgtr12 You have pre-heat plugs in your car (if it's a diesel) these things don't...that is why they smoke (clag) like they do until warmed up....anyway when they were built they really weren't meant to be shut down that is maybe why they aren't fitted with pre-heaters...they were just stabled in the sidings overnight and left running!!!! Diesel (even red) was dirt cheap in the 50s/60s/70s so why bother to stop them!
