It's sad that in the United States that private insurance will not care for seriously ill people like this. If he was a danger to himself and his family, and the private insurance will not cover adequate treatment...
This is a disgusting lack of legal action. This is America. We're supposed to have a safety net.
Parents in these scenarios are not to blames completely. The Health care system is to blame. I work at a mental hospital, and parents who have private insurance are only allowed to stay for a few days. However, the parents that have medicaid can stay for almost 2 weeks. I have heard doctors tell parents to give up custody of their child to the state, so they can get the treatment needed.
@ChristinaDuffer Then you should understand the difficulty she faced, and especially since the child was already exhibiting signs of violence. Living with someone with Aspergers can be highly frustrating; imagine someone who when manic poses a threat to you and your family AND themselves.
@nicolina1987 Your saying they should just give up on them? Thats bullshit. I joined the army so I could afford to put my father in a program to help him. We didnt just pawn him off because "we couldn't deal" It was difficult, but he is worth all this trouble. People just want to take the easy way out. This is the best choice? You dont think they are going to still be pissed when they find out that they were just handed over because they couldn't be dealt with? You are fucked up.
@ChristinaDuffer No I don't think they should just "give up" on them but the mental health system is inefficient. If her other children or herself were at risk she was right to get him help the only way she could. They might be pissed, but people can't go around in life making decisions based off of what people "might" feel in the future. He might also be grateful that he got his life back, if his treatment is successful.
i beleive she id the right thing too. i have no kids, but i can clearly see it was her last option. she probably saved him by bringing him somhwhere where he could get the help he needed...
If she had not done this and her son had killed an animal from the neighborhood, or another child she would be accused of other things. I can see how and why she did this and it was courageous.
i dont give a shit about "it was out last choice" whatever. You should never abandoned your child. JOIN THE FUCKING ARMY or Work harder. Your children are worth working extra hard for.
Is there not any government funded service for mentally ill children? Isn't chips like a step up from medicaid, and it has a much higher income guideline.
Mental health is the most important, if they didnt have to worry about money, or if they have health insurance, then these events would not happen! These children cant help that they're born with bi polar or the like! This is why National Health Care is essential!
This mustve been a horrible, hard desicion for her to make. I am bi polar and was adopted - not because of that but because my biological parents were meth heads. Anyway, my adoptive parents never gave up on me. Ive always refused medication and my parents stood by me. I have 2 kids of my own now, and I fear what mental illnesses mightve been passed down the line. My husband is adhd, bipolar, and has depression. This situation for her though seemed unsolvable. Hes gettinghelp now tho good.
A real heartbreaking choice would be for the mother to donate part of her heart tissue to give to her child, most mothers would do that, but that would literally be heartbreaking.
Ugh, how awful, to just drop him off on someone, giving up on the child because he has a mental problem. Bipolar is a treatable, not something you just throw your child away for.
well, lady, you can't just drop your child off at a hospital and expect everybody to uderstand!!! Ya'll are a bunch of idiots!!!!! And you are an aweful mother! You need yur child taken away.
Please. She didn`t just drop her child away. She had to, mostly because your U.S health care system is so bad. In better countries, with better social struktur she wouldn`t have to give her child total away. And if your child is serious ill, you have to take it to a hospital.
i agree with her

I don't think this was a wrong choice, unless you've raised or lived with someone with mental illness your opinion is lacking adequate insight.
