Chambers needs to stop acting like a victim. Just because he is uncomfortable with human sexuality doesn't mean that he needs to make other people feel like there is something wrong with them as well. Blech.

Interesting thoughts from John Smids that Christians want to reach out to gay groups. Hopefully with a loving message. But I still wonder, how will the gay community react to this? We know that Christianity despises homosexuality and want to convert gays, not only to Christianity, but also to a heterosexual lifestyle with wife and kids. It's about credibility in the first place, I think. Clean up the skeletons in the closet, then we can talk.
If the Gay Christian Network would ever have a platform to have a social and religious influence, the organization would defiantly take that opportunity. Not everyone is suited for this conversation. That is why at the conference had the panel as optional piece. If you do not see the good that came out of this conversation, then you do not fully see the importance of bridge building. Change is slow but sure. This conversation certainly marked the beginning of change for God's Kingdom. -Robbie
@bridgebuilder26 Part of the problem though, is that Chambers said NOTHING new. He's said all this stuff before...so how does *this* specific conversation mark the beginning of change for God's Kingdom?
@hubbaduh How can you say he said nothing new? Many of the things he said were news to my ears.
1:27:28
Wendy: “Will there be room in the future for people connected with exodus to be able to openly describe themselves as gay without it being problematic.”
Alan: “Yeah, there might be people who are already there who do describe themselves that way I don’t know. I don’t think it’s the descriptor or the label that leads to inclusion or exclusion from the ministry of exodus.”
@bridgebuilder26 I stand by my comment...I've been told by people who follow Alan much more closely than I do that he's said nothing new. It's my understanding that with a little research, you can basically find everything significant that he said elsewhere from years ago.
@hubbaduh There is no credibility in that statement. I'm sorry just because you think or heard something doesn't mean it is proof. And just because you don't like Alan doesn't mean you have to discount him sacrificing his evening to converse about things that will mark the beginning of change for God's Kingdom. And *even if* he didn't say anything new, is it not enough that he came to our conference? (Are you even a part of GCN? Or are the other dissenters?)
You did say, "Given that this conference's theme was "Ambassadors of Reconiliation" I think it dovetailed quite well with the "point" of the conference." So what are all the ruffled feathers about?
I am left with absolutely no respect for GCN or its leadership after this. I could not watch the full thing because it made me ill. There is a difference between building bridges and trying to make your own organization and yourself look like you are a hero. Why not have done this as a one on one. I thought that a conference like the GCN one was about being around those that lift you up, and make you feel loved and to grow stronger in your walk with God.
@JustinMarvin1982 You might want to check out Ex-Gay Watch. They had a post about this, where a conference goer explained the trauma that they experienced by being at the conference and having Chambers there like this.
I have already listened to the audio of this. Nice to now have the visual. Non verbal communication tell us a lot beyond words and tone of voice. Congrats to all involved as I am sure it was challenging to all involved and incredibly courageous for some. We achieve more by talking with each other face to face then attacking each other in the media and on the net. The journey is not over. Onward.

I am a straight woman, I've been a Christian for 38 yrs. Because of the honesty of the gay community, and because I've been sympathetic to that community for a number of years, I cannot recommend this video enough. I am a straight ally for LGBTIs. I am humbled by them and so blessed by them. And indeed, they have set me free from so much baggage. All my love to you, Justin. And to the rest of the panel as well.
Dialogue is good...but was the GCN conference the place for this? I say no, based off of the 'point' of the conference (well, what other people have told me is the point of the conference). On top of that, I've been told (from people who know far more about this than I do) that Chambers didn't say anything 'new' at this panel. I think that GCN is definitely changing its direction/purpose...which is fine, but I wish that GCN had been more upfront about that.
@hubbaduh Given that this conference's theme was "Ambassadors of Reconiliation" I think it dovetailed quite well with the "point" of the conference. Note that the discussion was optional to attend, there was a special session before and after for people who needed extra support, and that as Christians we are called to love everyone at all times. Note also that GCN wants to be so successful that it will do away with itself; i.e., that the church will achieve tolerance and no longer need GCN.
@taydar64 What you're saying *does* make sense, but I think that this conference then has quite a different 'point' than previous conferences. I'm not sure that it was made clear enough that this conference was going to take quite a different turn. What's also confusing is that in October, Justin told an ex-gay survivor that it would be inappropriate for someone like John Smid to even *BE* at the conference...yet in January, he has Smid AND Chambers on a PANEL?
I admire Justin Lee as a great leader and changer in this issue. Changing the sexual orientation of a human is not only impossible, it is abusive. When religiously affiliated people use the Word of God to try to shame and deem people unacceptable, then it is also religious abuse. The road back to God can often be too difficult for some after events like reparative therapy. I am saddened by the destruction to the spirit and well as emotional and mental health of exgay victims.

Ummm... she'll realize that marrying you was a huge mistake and that you need to learn to get over the fact that you're gay and accept yourself.

Thanks for the vid, I downloaded the mp3 from GCN. It seems that ex-gay "therapists" are coming out one after another.
