I don't really buy that hollywood as a sample population of women is misleading. Funny people should be most represented in Hollywood regardless of their gender. Even if you used youtube as a sample you would find the same results: women are generally not very funny and when they try to be they can be annoying. Compare an average looking woman with an average looking man. you will realize that the average looking woman can get sex and date men a lot more easily than the other way round. I think you missed what he was getting at. He isn't saying "I don't think Tina Fey (my stand in for "small sample of women in hollywood")s funny, so women aren't funny." He is saying something like, "There are some funny women, like Tina Fey, but in general being funny is not a common strength among women."

you dont want to acknowledge the advantage that women have when it comes to attracting the opposite sex. Compare an average looking woman with an average looking man. you will realize that the average looking woman can get sex and date men a lot more easily than the other way round. Ever been to bars, the least attractive of women can get fit guys for sex, while there is much greater pressure on men to stand out and be good looking in order to take someone home.

While an average looking man can will have much much fewer opportunities, I can assure you of that. I think Hitchens has known more women than you have, better than you have too. The same can be said about men. Women can make each other laugh, and men will laugh at them simply to get laid, and so they comonly have a reason to believe they are funny, while Men are in the big leagues and many woman challenge us looking for reasons not to laugh, and we must crack them like a safe armed with only our humor. Women are superior to men in so many ways. Men are more violent, less able to communicate, less physically attractive. Why can't you give them this one obvious advantage. That, in general, men are far funnier than women. The best comedians are all men. This isn't saying men are better. I think they just feel the need to be funny from an early age. Or we are out of the evolutionary race, as Hitchens says.

I think you missed what he was getting at. He isn't saying "I don't think Tina Fey (my stand in for "small sample of women in hollywood")s funny, so women aren't funny." He is saying something like, "There are some funny women, like Tina Fey, but in general being funny is not a common strength among women."
To be perfectly honest, no one can point to anything but personal experience. And my experience leads me to agree with Hitch. I've known plenty of wonderful women, but few truly funny.

Yeah, Christopher is careful not to generalize (except in the title of his essay, which is a pretty good attention getter). His actual argument is founded upon evolutionary adaptation, basically that women have less need to be funny. On the other hand, he is rather blunt about it.

Joke telling is masculine by nature, but it is independent of sex (which is what Hitchens was saying). Women can tell jokes: but when they do so, they are "playing a man's game".
