Celebrating death in a grandiose fashion, as only an artist could, Bob Fosse proves that true art makes one more spiritual than even the greatest ascetic.
The commentary, done just before he died, let's us know Roy was not a pro dancer/singer, but he totally holds his own and earned respect among broadway pros.. He said how a nun said she saw his movie, and found it very interesting that death is woman, a beautiful young Jessica Lange, and like others in the film, a Fosse companion.
How in the hell does Scheider/Fosse keep his watch so close to his wrist, without it traveling upward? I can't do it on a daily basis, nevermind attempting these moves! Seriously, it's like why do you always lose one sock in the laundry. I mean, WTF is up with THAT!!??! GAAAHHHH!
I've only seen a couple of scenes from this movie, and now I'd love to see the whole thing.
I adore this film - marvelous, gorgeous, melodious......with great acting, producing, editing, directing. Roy Scheider deserved the Oscar for this role - phenomenal acting. Other actors/actresses were brilliant too
1979 is one of my all time favorite years in film - All That Jazz, Alien, Rocky 2, Apocalypse Now, Moonraker, Mad Max, Kramer vs Kramer, The China Syndrome, The Brood, Tess, 1941 etc
Ben's moves starting at 5.41 are so great because they hit beats that are so unexpected. Fosse was the master of it. It's weird, it's as if Fosse locates the anatomy of music or the nucleus of it. The choreography is so great that it can be performed without the music or it can be set to various songs.
To those that don't know this at the end, there's a young actress go by Terri Treas who worked with Fosse and appears on this picture according to Kenneth Johnson's DVD commentary from Alien Nation pilot and Alien Nation Dark Horizon. She went on to appear on a # of shows and movies.
(con't).... The lift's seal were blown 'cuzz Fosse needed the band at 0:25 too come up faster, so Fosse had 'em pump up the pressure to raise the lift faster. I've heard that the seals have since been fixed, but knowing NY it probably took 20 years.
@RandallFlaggNY I forgot...the lore had it that NY tried to get the movie production company to fix the lift's seals. This was not a cheap repair, mind you. I don't know if NY State sued the production company, but I heard that the production company never paid, and gave some dog ate the homework excuse.
This was filmed in Theater D at SUNY Purchase. "D" is a black box theater with a built in lift to raise and lower scenery and supplies. During my time there (mid-80's) the lift leaked hydraulic oil and would slowly drop, maybe one inch per day (can't quite recall). This was bad, because sets would be cracked when the lisf dropped. The lift was kept up in position by black iron poles. (con't..)
Whenever I see him hugging his daughter goodbye, her not letting go, and that being the ONLY moment the death angel regrets taking his life, I cry, I swear to god..
Does anyone know if the other female dancer is Leland Palmer (who played his wife)? She doesn't look like the same person to me. Ann Reinking is obvious..... she's so unique (and awesome).
Very first movie dealing with the scourge of A.I.D.S., that alone made this movie special, but, the preformance by Roy Scheider was his greatest of his carrer. This is a movie ahead of it's time, because it also dealt with Choice,of going out the way you want, instead of being hooked up to machines at the very end! Goodbye Roy!!!
@XFringeDivisionX Are you sure you're thinking of the right movie? "All that Jazz" was premiered in 1979. Detection of acquired immunity deficiency was not first uncovered until 1981. As a matter of fact it wasn't even known as AIDS/HIV in it's earliest days, it was called GRIDS. All That Jazz predates this period.
@XFringeDivisionX He doesn't have AIDS. He had heart failure because of extreme drug abuse and overwork. And if yout think the movie was about choice you missed the point. The point was that Gideon / Fosse has the choice to be happy whenever he wants to if he can just give up his reckless, self-destructive behavior but is unable to. A very self-loathing film (and one that also hates the latent hypocrisy in Broadway - see music choice at the very end).
Yes, this is sped up. A half step high. The end of this was stolen from Billy Joel's Captain Jack. It also features Jon Faddis on the repeating trumpet high E flat concert and Lew Soloff on the screaming trumpet solo.
I remember when this flick came out. Don't think I've ever seen such eroticism without anyone actually .... ya' know.... The music throughout the show was superb !
Great movie,great music...

@toobusywriting I think it's Kathryn Doby who plays the assistant. She was Fosse's longtime asst. as well.
