  • Megamel, I love the video and the hand me down dr 350 you gave me, I'm thinking of keeping that for dirt (since the carpool lane opens up occasionally on my way to work and the 70mph in high traffic in LA on knobbies and 350cc is more than exciting) and buying a 650 or 1000 VStrom...here's an idea....you buy the 1000 and I'll buy your 650...

    Great video Megamel!

P.S. Megamel is not only great at videos, he's a great dad! :)

  • Hey Mel (I mean John!) I'm on an 02 DL-1000 and loving it! Better power on the highway, but yeah ... a little heavier offroad. The DL-650 is a tremendous bike!

  • Hi, Glad you're loving your DL. I still love mine as well. I also bought recently a almost new DR650 and rode it 3K miles from Yuma to Cabo and back. Fun! Check out the trip on my Blog which you can link to from my MegaMel.com website. Have a super day, Mel

  • Are you John Malkivich?

  • Hi, I think John and I might be long lost brothers. I've had a lot of people say we're a lot alike. Thanks for your note. Have a really super day, Mel

  • I got so excited after seeing this video that I bought a Strom650. I have a week to decide whether or not to buy the extended warrantee. Any thoughts? Thanks!

  • Hi, Glad to hear that you bought a Strom. I still love mine and think it's the best deal on an adventure bike. I don't think you need the extended warranty. The bike seems to be very reliable. Have a super day,

    Mel

  • @MegaMel10 Thanks, Mel. I'll heed your advice, and I'll use the $ for some guards, handlebar risers, and a few other accessories rather than the extended warrantee. Having someone with experience helping out a newbie with advice sure makes life easier!

  • Hi, Thanks for your note. Yes, those add-on's will make the bike yours. Have fun with it. Mel

  • I owned both the 650 and the 1000, the DL1000 is hands down a much better bike the 650 was ok but the 1000 ran 1000 smoother at highway speeds

  • I loaded this for the V-Strom (am considering buying one), but the V45 Honda stole the show. Thanks for that!

  • I just returned from a PA to CA trip on a Vstrom 1000. Awesome bike.

  • Be ok video if it wasnt for the yank accent..........annoying.......

  • Dude looks and sounds like John Malkovich.

  • @lucabrasi944 Um....that is John Malkovich.

  • Yes, the ground clearance is a bit low. Truthfully, this isn't the bike for rough (4WD type) roads. The clearance isn't a problem on maintained dirt roads. The seat height is a bit high due to the V design engine. Thanks for the note. Mel

  • Hey megamel, I know you said 2 up riding is better on the 1000, but how does the 650 fair on freeways at 75-80 mph? I am truly torn between the two... I 90% of my riding will be freeway, and 90% of that being solo. Your thoughts?

  • Hi, The 650 will run all day long, no problem at 75 - 80 on the highway. The only reason to buy the 650 is if you're wanting to maximize the the dirt capability. I'd buy the 1000 now. Even the 650 is big and heavy for any non-maintained dirt. For maintained dirt roads, the 1000 will be totally OK. I ride my HD Dyna Wide Glide on those kind of roads and it's fine. Of course the suspension is not much. Hope that helps, Mel

  • I think the dl1000 is much much better for the highway I had a vstrom 650

  • Hi, Yes, especially if you want to run the higer speeds, the 1000 is superior. Sandie and rode 6K miles to Panama and back last year and the 650 was fine. I only wanted the less weight for the dirt but now I think for maintained dirt roads the weight of the 1000 is fine. Have a super day, Mel

  • Is john malkovich ??

  • V-STROM FAIL!!

    GS FOREVER!

  • which to buy??? the Vstrom is a motorcycle, the HD is a fashion accessory ;)

  • Hi, Tough decision! One of each would be nice like I did. The V-Strom is a super value for a bike that's great for touring, goes on dirt, and is fine for around town riding. The HD is a totally different experience. I liken it to my John Deere tractor. Heritage, sound, cool, and more. Have a nice day, Mel

  • How many miles did the Karoo Metzler's last you?

  • Hi, The Karoo went around 5K before the knobs were worn so unevenly it was annoying. The Tourance on the rear still had 4/32 tread left. I put Michelin Anakee 2's on front and rear and it looks like they'll make it to 10K. If you really want to push on dirt, the knobbie front is nice. Have a super day, Mel

  • the best moto is v-max

  • Hi there I love the dl650 but I'm confused should a person buy a Harley or a Vstrom. You recommend both if you could own one which one would you buy ?

    Al

  • Hi, For only one bike, I'd buy the VStrom or something like it. I have the HD (local rides - cool bike) - VStrom (excellent for touring/ good on maintained dirt roads) - DR350 (DR650 would be similar - better for tougher 4WD type roads and can be ridden on the highway for long trips and even two-up for shorter trip of a few days or so - we rode our DR650 for a week in Newfoundland) - KTM450 (a real dirtbike for serious trail use and can still be ridden on the highway at 60 MPH all day).

  • Talk talk talk... but no action with the Strom!

  • I love my vstrom dl1000. They do everything right.

  • Hi, I wish I'd bought the 1000. Why not! 1/3 more power and only around 35 pounds heavier. I rode to Pueblo today for lunch. A great ride! Mel

  • @MegaMel10 I can't tell if your being sarcastic? Are you. I'm looking at getting a vstrom I can't afford a bmw and with my back I want a workhorse touring bike

  • Hi, No, I wasn't being sarcastic. I love the VStrom. It does everything well. I probably would buy the 1000 now (more power). I thought the less weight of the 650 was more important but now I realize that the 1000 would be fine for maintained dirt roads. If you want to ride unmaintained dirt roads, you need something like the DR650. The VStrom really works great for touring and the dirt road capabiliity makes it the first choice. Have a super day, Mel

  • hey man are these good bikes for starting riders?

  • Hi, The V-Strom is quite tall and heavy for a beginning rider. But, if they are at least 6' tall, it would be OK. Mel

  • @MegaMel10 - Yeah; a bit top-heavy, esp. when parking it on a slope can tip over. I've almost lost mine a few times.

  • Is that the stock seat ?? Feels a little low thinking about the 1000 seat what do you think??

  • Hi, Yes, my seat is stock. It had a "cut down" seat when I got it but I traded it for the stock one. I think the 1000 has the same seat but if it's softer, that would be better. The 650 seat isn't bad.Have you looked at my travel site? MegaMelAdventures.Blogspot.com

    Have a super day, MegaMel

  • Im a 5'4 girl with a 30 inch inseam and I've sat on the Yamaha 225 which has the same seat height but I wanted to have a little more power and I've been looking at the KLR's as well but was thinking that the DL650's are a little more realistic for my height, without sacrificing suspension. My dream is to go to Alaska also. I was wondering what you think my options are?

  • What'd he say?

  • Hey MegaMel! I love your video series, and was seriously considering getting a vstrom 650. I currently own a DRZ400 that is great, but I have no riding buddy to do some serious off road. I want to take some road trips, and this looks like it's the bike for everything. How many miles do you have on yours? What is the engine life with the basic maintenance? Thanks!

  • Hi, I'm at Lake of the Ozarks. I think I have about 20K miles now. No problems. Yes, road trips are great on the VStrom and you can take the dirt roads as they come. I think the engine should be good for at least 100K. Maintenance is easy. Change the oil and filter. I'm thinking of a DRZ400 to replace my DR350. Have a super day, MegaMel

  • CALA BOCA BURRO!!

  • Sounds like Dennis Hopper.

  • You has start de trip, and no talk bullshit!

  • Cool! Thanks for checking out the Vid. MegaMel

  • I am looking for a new motorcycle and it come down to the V strom 650 or the Klr 650. and i am really torn between the 2. The v stromm looks nicer but the Klr is about $2,000 cheaper. Is it really worth the extra money. I dont the quality or toughness of either bike. Just look on youtube the have both proven themselves too me it just an economice issue. If you have any advice I would like to hear it thanks

  • @codeman1979 Hi, The KLR is best for solo rides and will be much better for rougher dirt roads. The V-Strom is fine for the maintained (smoother) dirt roads but you'll want to go a lot slower on dirt with it than you would on the KLR. I'm considering a KLR or DRZ400 for my Colorado dual-sport day rides. The V-Strom is by far the best for two-up touring and works great on the maintained dirt roads. Sandie and I just did a 6,200 mile trip to Panama and back on ours. Hope this helps, MegaMel

  • @MegaMel10 Thanks I appriciate the insight.

  • @codeman1979 what about the Honda Transalp? isn't this bike aviable in the states?

  • @ohgottweristdas i dont the do. i have never seen it but then again you guys have a lot of cool bikes and cars that we dont see in the states.

  • @ohgottweristdas Transalp is more off road oriented. Chose what you what as a type of bike, Vstrom is easier a commuter than the transalp.. But transalp is a better off roader. Vstrom is a more do-it-all than transalp.

  • @codeman1979 got myself a V-strom . You are going to love every minute

    with it

  • Thanks for the awesome vid MegaMel! keep up the good work! :D

  • Hi, Thanks a bunch for the nice comment. I appreciate it. Have a wonderful day, MegaMel

  • ronaldo!!!!!!!!

  • everything's so fine, but how about a full gear? like motorcycle pants and boots? I'm just sayin'.. :)

  • Hi, You are right! I Ride a KTM 450 on trails and wear everything possible. When I ride the VStrom I get complacent. I did have Tourmaster boots on that day but some better pants would be a good idea. Thanks for the note, MegaMel

  • hi. v-strom or transalp? What would be the Best bike?

  • Hi Dan, I don't know anything about the Transalp. I don't think they've sold it for awhile. Some friends of mine have ridden them but seems like they are in storage now. I think it might be OK but since the VStrom is on the showroom floors, I'd go with it. Sorry, I can't help more, MegaMel

  • Sure does look the real deal, I liked the red so much I purchased one. Add, Avon Distanzia tyres, Renthal Fatbars & raisers, acerbis hand guards, crash bars & bash plate combo, Givi complete pannies & topbox set.

New off road gold chain & renthal gold sprockets.

    Staintune sports exhausts

  • i think ,after six bikes that i had that v-strom is the only real allrounder at the time! i drive every day in the trafic, and at weekends i can travel 500km without geting tired!! most fair buy!!!

    very safe too!!

  • You are really persusive Mel - I have been off bikes since 1974 and was looking for something that would do most everything. This seems to fit the bill. What do you think of the ABS version? Also, do you think I should get a taller windscreen? What other extras did you add to the bike?

  • Comment removed

  • i'll tell ya WHY U want to buy a V-Strom !

Becuz its the BEST F bike out there !!

    Dats WHY !!!

  • So a question for you that have a lot of bikes ?

What would be the Best buy ??

a Harley Davidson Sportster ( Good sound and Respected )

Suzuki GSX -F ( Agility and Speed )

Honda Deauville ( Comfort and Travelling )

    For my next bike ?

  • Hi, Good question. Sorry for the delay. I just got home from an 1,800 mile ride in British Columbia. Fun! I like the VStrom for it's versatility (street and dirt - great for touring). I love my HD Dyna Wideglide for pure fun. A Sportster would have that same fun factor. Is the Deauville a Goldwing? Yes, probably great for comfort but not good on dirt??? It would be nice to have several bikes for different uses. Have a super day, MegaMel

  • Deauville is the Little brother of the Pan European, it's great for touring, but not nearly as cool as the sportster...

    " Honda Touring : Varadero 125c, Deauville 650, Pan European 1300, Goldwing 1800 *

  • usefull and entertaining video, bike looks great in red!

  • Hi, Yes, the VStrom DL650 is a good beginner bike. It's a bit tall but can be lowered if you're less than 5'-8". I have the Givi bags and trunk. My wife and I can travel with clothing, tent, and sleeping bags. What's nice is that it's dirt road capable as well. The right bike is really a function of what you want to do with it. One bike will not serve all purposes. I currently have four. A dirtbike for trails, DR350 for daytrip dualsport rides, HD for street, and the VStrom.

  • ... and the vstrom... you dont state the purpose for that one. Guess its because its an all around bike... and yeah, I switched from the bicycle straight to a vstrom and I can tell you that for begginers its a great bike... Good riding...

  • Hi, Yes, you're right! I like the VStrom because it is a great all around bike. Great for touring and handles the dirt well. I rode mine to Cabo San Lucas last year and Sandie and I will do a British Columbia tour in September. Have a super day, MegaMel

  • Is a bike like this ok for a beginner?

  • Hilarious! *****

  • Hi Kendrick, Cool! I'm running 4 bikes - HD, DL650, DR350, and KTM450. The DL650 is about 40# lighter than the 1000. It makes a difference on dirt. The 650 has enough power to pass on the Hwy. My wife and I tour with it. I love it! It makes an excellent touring bike. Try to take a Demo ride on one. MegaMel

  • Hey MegaMel, I've been researching the DL1000 V-strom as a possible second bike. I currently have a Yamaha XT-600, so this bike can handle the dirt pretty well. I was wondering why you chose the DL650 and not the 1000. My idea bike would be at home on the highway... does the 650 have the torque needed for passing at highway speeds? My XT600 is blown around alot, and doesn't feel secure on the highway.

  • Hi MegaMel...i came to this video as i am thinking of trading in my HD883 for one of these but then i started surfing and got to your blog...Amazing places you've been..Gotta see some of those places with my kids..Truly inspirational...All the best from the UK

  • Hi, Good to hear from you. Thanks for your great comments. Yes, going places with the kids/ Grandkids is great. My daughter and I are going to Las Vegas for the SX race tomorrow and then we'll ride Moab on our dirtbikes for a few days. Good luck on your MC choice. Every bike has it's trade-offs. Have a great day, MegaMel

  • i love my strom, but i want some videos of that v45 dakar in action!

  • Hi, Thanks for the tips. I didn't know the DL1000 seat was better. My buddy sold his DL1000. I should have trade seats with him. I'd like to try the pipe. I hate the sound of the stock pipe. The grips seem like a good idea as well. Mel

  • Hi, No one calls me MegaMelkovich. I'll have to look him up - I don't know who he is.

    Mel

  • Hey Mel, you look a bit like John Malkovich. Do your buddies call you MagaMelkovich?

  • Hey MegaMel, I put the DL1000 seat on my K7 DL650 which now means I can do hours in the saddle in total comfort. Also put on hand-guards and a Staintune exhaust. The exhaust made a real difference. A little more power and an awesome rhythmic note that caresses one's soul. Throw in a set of dual density Pro Grips, and you got the perfect machine. It's the most comfortable bike I've ever been on.

  • And you gotta love those head lights--the way those big babies shine straight through the back window of any car car you are approaching is a real plus for safety. It's a good thing to be a bit higher on the road. Besides making you more visible to motorists, it also gives you a much better view of whats ahead. I love my Wee-strom and would highly them to anyone who's looking for comfortable sports tourer or an everyday city commuter.

  • And it can go anywhere you would take, let's say a Subaru Forester. With the right tires it will eat dirt roads. Oh, and I love that honda. Looks like something outta Mad Max.

  • Hi, Right! U put the Mettzler Tourance and Karoo on mine. Yes, Milo's Honda is really pretty cool and it's feels good on dirt. Mel

  • Hi, Yes, I agree totally. Mel

  • I'm looking for a bike that could cruise as well as perform as a good dirt bike ... can u give me some opinion except V-strom??

  • Hi, The KLR650 might be the best bet for comfort and ability to handle dirt. I had a DR650 but the seat was too hard and the tank too small. The Honda XL650 (I think that's the number?) might have the best dirt performance? The trade-off is the dirt versus street performance. Mel

  • haha you only said that other guys bike was good so he didn't feel bad when you started bragging.

  • Hi,

Right! Kinda'! I certainly wouldn't want Milo's Honda but but he and I ride the Gold Camp Road out here and when we trade bikes, I feel a lot more comfortable on his bike. It sits low and feels very stable on the dirt roads. I love my V-Strom and plan to do a big trip in B.C. this fall.

    Mel

  • I have had both dirt bikes as well as cruisers. A couple of years ago, my late wife and I were at the BMW dealer and I fell in love with the GS 1200. But at 20K, I could not rationalize the expense. I finally discovered the DL 650 V-Strom and I am more than pleased with the overall versatility, awesome engineering, and great value of this machine.

  • Thanks for the video "MegaMel"

I like to see more videos like this on you tube

I'm stuck on whether a KLR 650 would suit my needs better or a V Strom 650, I know i would use the bike on pavement majority of the time, but then on the weekends id be riding logging roads, simple trails, and maybe a little desert riding, not sand, but dirt/rocky stuff here in eastern oregon, but looks like a great bike! Nice tires it gives it that off-road look i think it needs!

  • Hi,

I had a DR650 for a couple of years and wished I'd bought the KLR 650. The seat is too hard and the tank is too small on the DR. My V-Strom 650 is only good for maintained dirt roads. For un-maintained dirt roads, the KLR would be much better. The DR is even better except for the things I mentioned. Good luck and have fun on whatever you get. MegaMel

  • I had the same choice. I'm 80% on road, but try to find some dirt when I go on trips. I went with the VStrom because for me it is much more comfortable. I hated the seat and sitting position on the KLR. I've got a skid plate, crash bars and luggage on the strom and went to Trail Attack tires. Still not a great off road tire, but much better than the stockers. I've done quite a bit of off roading and it works well. KLR is better for more serious off roading. Both great bikes.

  • Why this? Why not a Harley 883 or Harley 1200? Other than a bigger gas tank, what's better on it? Just asking your opinion...

  • Hi cabritorsss,

The right bike is the one that meets your specific criteria. For "Adventure Touring", my two posibilites were BMW GS 1200 or V-Strom 1000 or 650. The BMW was too pricey. Suspension travel on the HD's may be lacking? The V-Strom is really great for touring. Not sure I'd want to try a two-up trip to AK on the HD 1200/883. I have a HD Dyna Wide Glide and love it but the "Use Model" for the two bikes is different. MegaMel
