  • PATSY is the legend ! :D I cant believe he is so modest and friendly :D and his singing is just epic ! :D

  • i love dubliners - nice channel! best wishes PAUL

  • @Lasse3030 why? 1916 remember

  • Love this song, but Ronnie's version was one for the ages.

  • I love every version of this song

  • maybe we should just back and enjoy!that would be easy!

  • What a fantastic version of this classic tune! What an apt time to be remembering Dublin in its prime. Was lucky enough to hear Patsy belting this out in O'Donaghues in Dublin a few months ago. His voice and his talent is a national treasure. We may be in the shite financially but we will always be rich in our music and culture!!

  • Flogging molly also has a version of this song, who covered who here?

  • @joeymadstoned I think The Dubliners covered it first. But it's not their song. It was written by Pete St. John i think.

  • @Lasse3030 To call the greatmasters of the Irish folk ''wankers'' should be the 8th deadly sin.

  • What a voice

  • I love this song. I also got Luke Kelly's and Ronnie Drew's version.

I do not compare just enjoy the different voices.

  • Hes defonitely up there with the very best chrisinireland1...the guy is a legend

  • Ireland's greatest living ballad singer, by far!

  • awesome, but like Flogging Molly's version better

  • Patsy ´s Version ist für mich die Beste, er singt einfach wunderbar...

  • @cedricbeyerh die von paddy reilly ist aber auch klasse :)

  • Patsy is a great singer. This song is one of the best!!!

  • your close there SignusMelko, it was written for Patsy to sing by Pete St. John...alot of people seem to forget that sadly

  • @SMartyn1000 ah gotcha, thanks

  • He's the one who wrote the song, no?

  • what an amazing version of this fine song...patsy is an absolute legend and personally id rate him just as high as luke ronnie paddy etc etc... beautiful stuff

  • habe immer wieder Freude an diesem schönen Song mit Patsy

  • 1Just as good as Luke on this one if ya ask me

  • Great Song! Love it on St Patrick's Day!

    My Name "IS' Sean Dempsey!

  • hes no luke

  • fantastic please have a look at my video the rare auld times by the world famous tony mccabe of the ghosts of erin

  • If they only know how inspiring they can be for young music lovers like me..

You fill my hearth with so much hope, joy, and feelings hard to cope with. I wish you the best, Dubliners. Thanks for being musicians and not farmers or something alike (: Thanks for being with me.

  • Great song but with all due respect i love Luke Kellys version.

  • so damn beautiful

  • man i'm norwegian and I love irish music :D!!!... it's not so unlike norwegian folk music but in this song the lyrics are so...yhea.... :P... going to dublin for a week this fall...I'm really looking forward to it :) .. cheers friends :D

  • @laksenfranorge

it is not as surprising as you think to find a commonality between Irish and Norwegian folk music, during the period known as the dark ages the east coast of Ireland as well as the northern coasts of Britain were vulnerable to raids by 'Norsemen' some of whom stayed and brought their music and traditions.

  • @Tryssya1 not thats ridiculous lol the vikings had very little impact on gaelic culture only something like 50 words were adapted into irish from the vikings.

  • as a belfast man truely great song no doubt !!!

  • well the gargles proper dined me brain but this version eases me pain top marks

  • As much as i love luke kelly and always will, people seem to forget that this song was written for patsy to sing and i think he done an excellent job here.

As much as id love luke to be still singing with the dubliners, sadly he isnt. I think patsy is on par with luke if not better on this song

  • ring a ring a rosie!!! beautiful song

  • luke kelly sings this the best, you cannot beat my 1 true god at this song

    patsy is class to though

  • Ronnie sang it the best

  • don't compare...different people...same feelings for all the songs...from Luke to Ronnie to Patsy...and so on...

  • well siad

  • what do real irish people think of flogging molly's version of this song? do they like flogging molly or do they hate flogging molly for having americans in the band? or whats the deal?

  • its about the bloody song not the singers, if it where Germans, if they sing it well let them sing it

  • What do you mean "real" Irish people? Dave King who started the band was born and raised in Dublin. Yea, there are some Americans in the band, so what? FM is huge in Europe, so I seriously doubt there is any hatred.

  • What a fantastic version of this classic song Fire it up Patsy.

  • shut up you guys who are mean to my grandfather! Patsy Watchorn is my grandfather, I called him poppely when I was small (still do). If u dont believe me, ask him yourself!

    I love you Poppely

  • Haha yeah right

  • Well your granny is fantastic. Saw them at Vicar Street just before new year. Best ever. Legends.

  • Best version I've heard. Gives me goosebumps almost everytime I hear it.

  • top stuff , go for it Patsy , many many folk have done this fine song justice , this fella most certainly stands among them

  • personally i would like to hear seán sing this

  • You need a true dub to sing this. Sean originally comes from Galway

  • good call but to be honest - it doesnt matter who sings this song - the lyrics are the main thing !! unreal

  • Personally I thought Paddy's version was better

  • I'm sorry, but whenever he says, "Choir again, choir again!" it makes me think of the Mad Hatter. It's a wonderful song, make me feel slightly helpless but hopeful at the same time, you know? I love it. Sadly, I don't remember Dublin in the rare old times.

  • this guy has one of the greatest singing voice ever

  • The right voice for the right song !

Great irish feeling. Just missing ale around... ;-) ... or a glass of whiskey and a crowded pub.

Love to hear that - even not beeing native irish.

  • This is a completely different version to Luke's and to Paddy Reilly's. I like all three voices, although they're completely different; Paddy sounds smooth, Luke kinda sharp and Patsy sounds quite raw, he growls. Nothing wrong with that.

  • usermate55, you`re a complete braindead idiot!!

  • you`re interpreting too much of your brown right-minded shit into that!!!

  • Pete St.John wrote this song specifically for the Ramblers and for Patsy not for Luke.

  • Go on Patsy.

  • Ha-ha not a youngster anymore mind ye;o) but you are right, give me Ronnie's edition any day!

  • I'd tend to agree. This is perhap's the only Dubs song where I prefer Ronnie's version to Luke's. That said, Patsy gives an excellent rendition here. Is it just me; do John & the rest of the band look slightly bored here?

  • Ha-ha there ye have it, it's that Patsy bloke again! Just joking;o)

  • go fuck yourself

  • no offense bud but i take this stuff seriuos like are u even irish??

  • I'm not Irish but I love Irish music I've nothing against Patsy he comes across as a nice genuine guy but for me his singing is a bit hard on the ears I'm sorry but that's the way I feel.

  • Ronnie's version has to be the best I think. Even better than Luke's

  • That band is dinted without Luke,Patsy please don't immatate!

  • Thats who i class patsy as .

  • I was there tht nite ..brill thats the only word for the dub . c . ramblers.

  • the best of luke kelly double CD has the greatest version recorded of this song, check it out

  • Gav I take it you have never heard Luke Kelly's version, If you did and you think this is better you must be the only one...

  • I have heard Kelly's version and I prefer this one - Watchorn's voice suits the bittersweet reflective nature of the song perfectly for me.

Likewise Ronnie's version of McAlpine's Fusiliers, Paddy's Athenry and Luke's rendition of Scorn Not - sometimes a certain voice fits the song better that's all. Plus the fiddle playing on this is wonderfully mournful.

  • I know you wrote this, like, a year ago-- but well said. Nicely put.

  • The songtext is very nice (the performance is very well, of course, too)

  • The best performance of this song I have ever heard, utterly magical. Many thanks.

  • Missed this when it was posted before, thanks so much!

    One of my favorites!!

  • Amazing!
