What a fantastic version of this classic tune! What an apt time to be remembering Dublin in its prime. Was lucky enough to hear Patsy belting this out in O'Donaghues in Dublin a few months ago. His voice and his talent is a national treasure. We may be in the shite financially but we will always be rich in our music and culture!!
what an amazing version of this fine song...patsy is an absolute legend and personally id rate him just as high as luke ronnie paddy etc etc... beautiful stuff
If they only know how inspiring they can be for young music lovers like me..
You fill my hearth with so much hope, joy, and feelings hard to cope with. I wish you the best, Dubliners. Thanks for being musicians and not farmers or something alike (: Thanks for being with me.
man i'm norwegian and I love irish music :D!!!... it's not so unlike norwegian folk music but in this song the lyrics are so...yhea.... :P... going to dublin for a week this fall...I'm really looking forward to it :) .. cheers friends :D
it is not as surprising as you think to find a commonality between Irish and Norwegian folk music, during the period known as the dark ages the east coast of Ireland as well as the northern coasts of Britain were vulnerable to raids by 'Norsemen' some of whom stayed and brought their music and traditions.
@Tryssya1 not thats ridiculous lol the vikings had very little impact on gaelic culture only something like 50 words were adapted into irish from the vikings.
As much as i love luke kelly and always will, people seem to forget that this song was written for patsy to sing and i think he done an excellent job here.
As much as id love luke to be still singing with the dubliners, sadly he isnt. I think patsy is on par with luke if not better on this song
what do real irish people think of flogging molly's version of this song? do they like flogging molly or do they hate flogging molly for having americans in the band? or whats the deal?
What do you mean "real" Irish people? Dave King who started the band was born and raised in Dublin. Yea, there are some Americans in the band, so what? FM is huge in Europe, so I seriously doubt there is any hatred.
shut up you guys who are mean to my grandfather! Patsy Watchorn is my grandfather, I called him poppely when I was small (still do). If u dont believe me, ask him yourself!
I'm sorry, but whenever he says, "Choir again, choir again!" it makes me think of the Mad Hatter. It's a wonderful song, make me feel slightly helpless but hopeful at the same time, you know? I love it. Sadly, I don't remember Dublin in the rare old times.
This is a completely different version to Luke's and to Paddy Reilly's. I like all three voices, although they're completely different; Paddy sounds smooth, Luke kinda sharp and Patsy sounds quite raw, he growls. Nothing wrong with that.
I'd tend to agree. This is perhap's the only Dubs song where I prefer Ronnie's version to Luke's. That said, Patsy gives an excellent rendition here. Is it just me; do John & the rest of the band look slightly bored here?
I'm not Irish but I love Irish music I've nothing against Patsy he comes across as a nice genuine guy but for me his singing is a bit hard on the ears I'm sorry but that's the way I feel.
I have heard Kelly's version and I prefer this one - Watchorn's voice suits the bittersweet reflective nature of the song perfectly for me.
Likewise Ronnie's version of McAlpine's Fusiliers, Paddy's Athenry and Luke's rendition of Scorn Not - sometimes a certain voice fits the song better that's all. Plus the fiddle playing on this is wonderfully mournful.

Flogging molly also has a version of this song, who covered who here?
joeymadstoned 11 months ago
@joeymadstoned I think The Dubliners covered it first. But it's not their song. It was written by Pete St. John i think.
