@skate77zz thats his personal style, he is accenting the first notation of the cycles that repeat to show the pattern in them . Hope you like them. he is the world's finest ghatam player, and it was amazing to see him "nail" all this vocal material in just one take . truly humbling ...-))
i am 18 and currently living in the UK. I have never been exposed to south Indian rhythm however my interest in it keeps on growing. I am studying drum kit at degree level however the complexity and raw nature of these rhythms affect me like no other. you are truly blessed. would love any advice on how to begin my journey into the world of south indian rhythm, thanks.
Its our pleasure Charlie that you like this and are getting interested. The good news is that you live in the UK where there are many good teachers, only problem is that they teach orally and do not use western notation as you see above. Best way fwd for you would be get 2 DVD's to study from. One is our DVD ( of which you see the excerpt above), and the other is Vikku's son Selva and McLaughlin with their "Gateway to Rhythm"dvd. You can find both on abstractlogix(dot)com. thanks
@arjunbala4u sorry for the delay. it is in limited stores in chennai, but best way is to order online at rhythmhouse(dot)in and they can ship to you. thanks
@02049202 LOL--- Rappers wont be able to keep up with this guy's ( Umashankar) rap. Because his konokol ( vocal percussion) is a language that even precedes his physical drumming and is every bit as intricate and advanced as his maestro percussion!
Richard please go to abstractlogix(dot)com and type ultimateguru in the search box, or look under the "music instruction" category. you will find the dvd there and they ship worldwide. thanks
This world entrances me. I have been playing 'western' jazz and rock drums for almost 30 years and I enjoyed the Shakti music but didn't think to explore this Indian percussion world. Now I am ready and I'm trying to find as much video and written material as possible. John McLaughlin's Gateway to Rhythm DVD was a good start. Do you have any other suggestions? I sincerely believe that God is in these rhythms, they affect me proundly
Richard, I agree God is in these rhythms because they are so advanced and comprehensive. Gateway to Rhythm is a great start, but I think the "Language and Technique of South Indian Percussion" by Vikku Vinayakaram is the gold standard yet when it comes to explaining from rank basic to advanced intermediate level; because its got konokol ( vocal percussion) western notations transcribed, and methodical STEP by STEP lessons and grooves which you can apply to any instrument really
Thank you for the kind reply. I shall be buying this DVD very soon. I am applying certain ideas from konokol to my drumming on a 'western' kit. The initial results are fascinating! Keep in touch.
Wow very interesting, translating mridangam konukol notes to normal Snare drum type music notes, with the eighth and sixteenth notes, this must have been very hard to do.
thanks for your comments Worlddominator. yes it was very tough,as we transcribed 2 hours of south indian rhythm lessons ( ie, the entire instructional DVD) into western notation. Maestro fusion guitarist and composer D Wood did all this work sitting with Vijjuji and Selwaganesh. What you see is one of the lessons, and the downloadable sheet is on our website.
So glad you appreciate this. Makes all our hard work worthwhile to hear appreciation of this sort.
Computer games are a waste of time. Mozart was a genius, but he still had hours and hours of practice. What would it be like if 1/3 of that was spent on computer games?
... I don't see any accents. Why is he accenting those certain notes?
