  • Do you sand a surface with a rough (low count) grit if you want to stain it? I'm thinking this will leave more pores for the stains to penetrate rather than fine grit which is smooth and less porous. Is this about right?

I'm going to be working on Birch, some Ikea furniture.

    Thanks

  • hammerofharpel > ".. mention using a respirator .."

A respirator? You've got to be kidding. People have been woodworking for thousands of years without a respirator. Even with modern aggresive power tools, a respirator is not needed as long as good ventilation (real or artificial) is available and the the dust removal system within the tool is working effectively. Even without that, a simple dust filter mask is usually more than enough for bare wood.

  • Thanks for the comment. In the future, you may want to use the *Reply* text link under the original comment you're responding to. That way it keeps your point in with the thread instead of making people go find the person you're debating.

  • I wasn't really responding to, or debating with, anyone in particular, just the notion of using a respirator in general. The quote was included only to illustrate the subject had been mentioned previously.

  • i like the big one sander belt sander but its cost to much maybe$ 300 right ?

  • Tim you should always mention using a respirator when using a power sander. That fine micron dust is a bad idea for a set of lungs. You should also mention that belt sanders can gouge a surface -- if you're note careful.

  • Great points. Once you decide to stay under two minutes in a video, it is really hard deciding what points should be covered and what gets left by the wayside. :-/

  • Yes.
