Yuji Naka (former head of Sonic Team and lead creator of Sonic) has explained that "Robotnik" is the character's real name while "Eggman" is a "common name taken after his shape. Still in Most Japanese Bios list his full name as unknown. Its the same as the Sonic Maurice thing. Sonic's real name is uknown.
