Pancake you are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. As a cop in Florida, If I don't make an attempt to negotiate with a bad guy who is armed I can face charges in some situations. If this was in Florida, He would have been shot much sooner I'm sure but!!! We had better have been able to prove to the IGNORANT state Attorney that we tried to give him a hug first!!! AND THAT IS HOW COPS GET KILLED. Gun = NEGOTIATIONS OVER!!! Still by far a great show of restraint by this Hero Officer!!! Great Job brother.
I looked this incident up and can tell you that the officer is ok and still employed. It appears that he lost and eye during the shooting but survived. As I stated before, This is the bravest of the brave!!! While I agree that the suspect should have been shot before he shot, EVERY OFFICER IS DIFFERENT. We ALL make our own PERSONAL decisions and this Officer chose to try and save a life. Unfortunately, the Suspect chose death. Much love to all who serve and protect!! May God watch over you ALL.
The police officer should have shot him the moment the guy aimed the gun at him. Honestly, with all respect for the officers good intentions, it was a bad decision to continually ask him to put the gun down, especially when he aimed it at him.
@thewordsopinion He didnt fire only because the risk of collateral damage was too great. The store behind the gunman contained innocent people which could have been hit. Composure is defined in this video.
When I'd seen that suspect sighting at me. That would have been the end of asking. And wish one of them could have come around the building and creeped up that side, DONE. Thank goodness he survived. This SUCKS.
I can say from first hand experience that this Officer is by FAR the best of the best. To stare down the barrel of a rifle and still try and talk the man down requires unquestionable bravery and restraint. The world needs a billion more like this man!!! God bless all who serve to protect others. Be safe out there.
I think the real reason behind the officers restrain is the number of civilians in the store behind the suspect. If there was a good back stop.. this would have been a full out shootout from the get go.
This officer responded with incredible restraint and deserves the utmost respect. While the "average" person would have immediately responded with a flurry of gunfire at the subject pointing a firearm at the police, this officer thought enough of everybody else (BEFORE himself) to realize that taking a shot could certainly jeopardize the safety of anybody in the storefronts and general area. THAT is an incredibly difficult decision to make and one that could prove fatal for the good guy...
@1247DJM the only option is deadly force when a gun is trained on you. The officer was not trained to get shot, and therefore did not do exactly what he was trained to do.
@IngloriousPancake Problem is when the SIU investigate they will ask if you tried to talk him down first and if you didn't then charges can certainly be layed.
For those of you who don’t know, the reason the officer did not open fire was due to the civilians that were watching the incident through the store window. If you listen, the officer advises dispatch that the people in the store need to move away from the window. That is why the officer didn’t shoot. If he shot and killed an innocent individual, he would be facing charges for manslaughter.
Shit in Iraq we would have smoked that guy as we drove up. I am so tired of everyone living with false sense of securtity that they can get away anything they want cause its their "right." People are dicks to each other all the time cause they think someone wont knock them out for being a dumbass. This officer got shot cause he knew the storm of lawyers and everything else he would have to answer to if he would have taken swift action.
That officer has my respect. Rather than take his shot, he took "the" shot. Most cops WANT to shoot people. This cop saw a troubled citizen and decided to talk first. I hope he gets the Highest Honor.
@SuckMyAssBarf If someone points a gun at me, we're past talking and they’re beyond help. This officer let things go way too far and he may have made his wife a widow let his children grow up without a father. I'll reiterate, talking first got him shot, it was a bad call.
shooting first wasn't an option when you have a business directly behind the subejct with a gun. There is a large glass window, I'm ASSUMING this was during business hours, and the officer felt it wasn't a safe shot behind initially. He had to know where any rounds that didn't go into the suspect would go.
@bpeck20 They ended up shooting into the business anyway. Or is it better that they shot into the business and had an officer shot. It was a bad call.
This officer clearly showed that if you do not follow what you are trained to do, you will get shot. This was completely the officers fault. Out here in California, I don't live too far from LA, you even look at a cop wrong they will fucking shoot you. I'm not too fond of the Police. But its just an opinion.
@wastool Poor cover, too close to a suspect with a long gun, didn't take the appropriate action when said long gun was pointed at him or when supect said "I'm going to kill you motherfucker" 1:23 while aiming the gun and advancing tword him, too casual with homicidal suspect ie "come on man" "Put the gun down dude"
Honestly, I don't know why in Gods name he didn't shoot him when he pointed the gun at him. All police officers are trained to shoot upon the time that a gun is pointed at them because this can happen...You can't just randomly shoot, yet they have their targets on you and can shoot at anytime. This should have never happened. But hopefully this officer has recovered .. God Bless
You can tell he did everything in his power to try to get the man to negotiate. Unfortunately, that got him shot. Not to say he really did that much wrong, but if the suspect had a gun directed at me, I would have fired from square one, or if he had it in his possession AND failed to heed my warning, I would have fired. I wouldn't like, or want, to kill another human being, but if it's my life or theirs, you can sure as hell bet I'll do whatever I can to make sure it's theirs.
"maybe he did wait too long but first there is a business probably with people in it behind the suspect so if the cops miss and hit an innocent person theres (sic) gonna be a lot of shit to deal with"
Tough shit. He should have been killed after the first un-complied command.

Sad, wish the cop could have stayed down if he was not going to shoot. This is what happens with RIFLES vs pistols, they are able to take a cop down very easily through a car. Would have been better for them to rush the guy, flank him. One cop around the building and that corner etc. Hard to second guess these guys but wish this would have come out differently. Just sad, hope the cop is still okay.

The officer shot was Sgt. James Kelemen, 34 years old. This took place in Conroe, Texas on April 2nd, 2011. The suspect, James Richard Hill, 54 years old, was killed when officers returned fire.
Kelemen was shot in the right eye but remained conscious on the ground as he called his wife: "Hey, baby, I've been shot. I love you. Tell the kids I love them. I don't think I'm going to make it."
Kelemen survived, though he lost his right eye, and still has a job on the police force.
unbelievable, that is what you get for not following protocol. That cop has seen the Denkheller video and the Vetter video in training and he should have know better.
I know your supposed to watch for people behind the suspect but officers should have shot when gun was first pointed. But again your stress level is so high decissions are tuffer
Should've killed him as soon as he pointed the gun. He shows the ability and intent to commit deadly force, and it has to end. That officer never should'e gotten shot.
Sgt. James Kelemen of Conroe Police Department lost his right eye from the shot fired at him. a true hero... i read alot of the comments in here about how he should of shot the suspect right when he pointed the weapon at him, he didnt want to shoot bc people in the store behind him.
im not much on police officers but i do admire the cop tryin to talk him down most cops would of shot first and asked questions later, unfortunate he was shot but in my opinion he is the true hero here
I believe in giving the guy a chance but the instant he acquired a sight picture on me I would have fired. At the end of the day I want to be the one going home.
BB's would of been flying to that dude's direction the moment I saw the weapon. I think the cop was worried about hitting a third party inside the building or what not, but at the end he shot anyway. He should have shot the dude a long time ago.
Again this person should not be a police officer - he basically commited suicide. As soon as that gun is pointed at an officer, open fire and never hesistate. You hesitate you die. Front sight press!
@RangerUp24 I HATE THE RACE CARD AS MUCH AS YOU BUDDY, BUT THERE COMES A POINT WHEN YOU HAVE TO ADMIT ITS TRUE...Can u look me in the face and say that if that was a black gang banger from COMPTON that the cop woulda let him get off that shot? if so your a bold face liar. HELL, I WOULDA SHOT THE BLK GUY AFTER THE FIRST TIME HE DIDNT LISTEN. AND IM BLACK!!! Because of the media portayal of blk ppl our lives are not considered by many to be as valuable as a white person. FACT!!!
@herpshnerp The officer was a DUMB ASS....look at the comment of a police officer ROKASSAN. he should have BEEN shot that guy.. as a result of his BLATANT STUPIDITY he almost lost his life and hes a HERO?
@Mrepifany yes, that is exactly the point, he purposely RISKED his OWN LIFE to try to give this man all the time he could to put the gun down so he would not have to shoot him. Yes, he could have shot him immediately and it would have been "justifiable," but guess what, each human being on this planet has a value to their life, whether you like it, or they deserve it, they do. This officer respected that man's life by giving him as many chances to live as he could, and for that he IS a hero.
@ninjarider84 you obviously have never been trained. You are responsible for every projectile that comes out of that gun!!!! whats in the backdrop? a fucking strip mall with huge glass windows, filled with people that want to see the action. He is a great police officer and did exactly what he was trained to do. Idk what department trained you (if any), but I feel bad for the citizens it “protects”.
@ninjarider84 could not fire because there were civilians in the store behind the shooter that could possibly be hit had he fired and missed the shooter.
@RangerUp24 YOU PPL? LMAO... u KNOW its true... i HATE the race card myself... trust me i REALLY DO.. im a upper middle class black guy... i make over 175K a yr and drive luxury cars and trucks..My home is 14K sq feet and is paid for.....i DONT NEED to pull any race cards at all.. but i know a FACT when i see it....blk ppl lives are not considered as valuable as caucasian lives, not just in america but world wide....... its a fact we all have to live with dude..especially blk ppl...LOL
@FASTPISTOLDRAW What your forgetting to take into sonsideration is that the laws and system in AMERICA is designed to oppress and depress the black people. IM NOT TRYNA PLAY THE RACE CARDITS A FACT. I was just LUCKY and BLESSED to have escaped the GHETTO. I HATE the race card and CANT stand blk people that play it but EVEN WHITE PPL I KNOW CAN ADMIT ITS TRUE...
Did ya classless haters know that pointing the gun at the police is the sign of saying "SHOOT ME PLEASE! "? Police brutality is everywhere and I hate that but in this case the police was doing his job, he tried to save the man by not shooting at him but in the end he couldn't do nothing but to protect himself and the ppl around. so shut the fk up if you disagree cuz guess what? I dont give a fk about you
this officer right here is a remarkable officer...a true one at that! literally...he pulled up and showed this guy pointing a gun at him with some respect, talked to him calmly and everything!!! Man...not many cops i personally dont believe would have not shot this guy on site or even kill him. i hope the officer is well!
This is what happens when police try to be nice to crazy people... Don't get me wrong I completely respect the officer for trying to save that "man's" life... but look what happened...
... Now the REAL Sad part is if the cop shot first How many A-holes on here would be screaming for his badge because he shot someone that didn't pose a threat.
If you click on his negative comments/profile, you will see that the majority of his posted pictures are that of his favorite video games. WHO WOULD'VE SAW THAT COMING???? I just cant believe that some good-souled, non-employed, lives at home with parents (despite being 35) video game extraordinaire would have anything negative to say about hard working public servants!! Too bad they have to protect everyone, despite your level of ignorance!
@RangerUp24 you know its true dude... that cop was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too passive, and because of it he almost paid for it with his life... im glad hes ok though... BUT IM JUST SAYING, IF THAT GUY WAS BLK IT WOULD HAVE ENDED IN 2.2 SECONDS FLAT. Can you honestlyu say if that was a young gang banger from the hood, that cop would alet him bounce around like that and point that gun at him THAT MANY TIMES?
I hate to make this a racial thing but if that suspect was black the video would have would have been like: put the gun down, 1.5 seconds later:pow pow pow...
THE OFFICER WAS FAR, FAR MORE PATIENT THAN I WOULD HAVE BEEN - HE TRIED TO TALK THAT GUY DOWN EVERY WAY HE COULD, REASONS:
1) HE WAS A PROBABLY A VERY NICE GUY.
2) HE PROBABLY THOUGHT OF THE SHIT HE WOULD HAVE TO GO THROUGH (LEGAL SYSTEM) IF HE FIRED THE FIRST ROUND - EVEN THOUGH THE GUY WAS POINTING A SHOTGUN AT HIM.
LOOK, WHEN SOMEONE PULLS A GUN ON YOU, YOU SHOOT THE BASTARD TILL HE STOPS TWITCHING - THAT IS THE TRAINING COPS NEED - BUT THIS OFFICER NEEDS A MEDAL, NICE 100%!
While everyone is talking about shooting the suspect how about the fact that the cop took a damn bullet because he wanted to save that mans life instead of ending it, That's some heroic shit right there, The cop told his wife and kids near the end that he loved them and where he had been shot, none of you cock suckers mark my words none of you would have what it takes to die for your country, state, or community or even take a shot like this guy did, so shut the fuck up.
@Trendwin Shut the fuck up pussy. No cop is a hero, and only works for money, theirself, and their family. They build up big ass egos, only to be shot down for abusing their power half the time. There are good cops, and there are bad cops. Everyone gets what is coming to them one way or another, and for good cops its good things. For bad cops, its a casket and a sad family. The truth hurts, get over it.
@Trendwin He did not want to save his life. He could not fire because there were civilians in the store behind the shooter that could possibly be hit had he fired and missed the shooter.
@k4ldh He did not want to save his life. He could not fire because there were civilians in the store behind the shooter that could possibly be hit had he fired and missed the shooter.
@k4ldh Never ever second guess someones action when you weren't there. Yes thats what should have probably of happened but when you are in a stressful sitation like that sometimes you don't do things by the books because of the stress. Unless you have been there before its hard to understand
If it was me as the cop I would have said .."put the gun do...boom boom. No waiting for the guy to shoot me first. Gotta give the cop a thumbs up for waiting but he should of just shot him. No questions asked . Just demand the gun be put down once and if not bang he would be shot first. I t does not matter if he want to die by suicide cop shooting. Just get it over with and get the shift done.
@lewandlo - I am a Cop, and if someone points a gun at me... there is no "put the gun down". You point a gun at me, you are getting shot. As seen in this video, you don't try and talk to someone pointing a gun at you. You protect your life and the life of those around you. It's a good thing you are not a Police Officer lewandlo, because I would never want you watching my back.
@teton152 Did you understand what I said?? It would have been he has a gun boom. You need to read before you shoot me down heheheh. There would have been no questions ,just shoot him before he shoots you or some one else..
It's amazing how this turns out . When Police officers discharge their weapons people start shouting police brutality and questioning why they had to use excessive force. Now here is a classic example of when they should have shot this murfucka but yet they showed extreme restraint . I nothing but utmost respect for Police men and women for the wonderful job they do. I hope this officer made it alive. Good riddance to bad rubbish on that bastard !
Jeez, to the comments saying he should of been shot straight away, not all police are trigger happy nut-cases that want to get into gun fights. The best way to resolve an issue is to apply as less force as possible.
@Andy9742 - Wrong. By pointing a gun at a Police Officer, THAT is lethal force. The Officer should have fired the moment the suspect pointed the gun at him. He would have been justified by his training, and by court ruling. You obviously are not law enforcement, please refrain from commenting on subjects in which you have no understanding.
I think because the guy took so long to point the gun and to shoot the police figured the guy was just trying to get them to kill him -in a suicide by cop. Maybe that is why it took so long for officer to do what they had to do.
I am not sure but I think I saw this on TV and the officer lost one eye.
Well this sure isnt in Texas lol.

Sgt. James Kelemen of Conroe Police Department lost his right eye from the shot fired at him. a true hero... i read alot of the comments in here about how he should of shot the suspect right when he pointed the weapon at him, he didnt want to shoot bc people in the store behind him.
OPRFirefighter25 4 months ago
im not much on police officers but i do admire the cop tryin to talk him down most cops would of shot first and asked questions later, unfortunate he was shot but in my opinion he is the true hero here
onefoodstamp 4 months ago
I believe in giving the guy a chance but the instant he acquired a sight picture on me I would have fired. At the end of the day I want to be the one going home.
paultana 4 months ago
The officer was too nice. I've seen too many videos like this in the police academy. I would've shot the sob in the dome as soon as I saw the gun.

THAT COP WAS WAY TOO NICE,AND PPL THEN COMPLAINT COPS ARE HARSH,WELL THERE YOU HAVE IT. THUMBS UP FOR THE COP

@superkampion Suggesting one officer is representative of all is stupid from both sides.
MentosMan727 1 month ago
BB's would of been flying to that dude's direction the moment I saw the weapon. I think the cop was worried about hitting a third party inside the building or what not, but at the end he shot anyway. He should have shot the dude a long time ago.
siggnolove 5 months ago
Lmao the cop is Pussn out come on man
TheJeffhero 5 months ago
Yes, he put himself in danger. But in the beginning of the video you can hear him tell dispatch to get the people in the stores away from the windows.
If the police would have opened fire they could have injured or killed innocent people.
Xevamir 5 months ago
Again this person should not be a police officer - he basically commited suicide. As soon as that gun is pointed at an officer, open fire and never hesistate. You hesitate you die. Front sight press!

@roddenby U a police officer?

FACT!!!
raekwon250 5 months ago
I think the concern is crossfire.
It sounds like he's having his dispatcher call into the business to have them get away from the windows.
madmaxman8 5 months ago
Kind of sad that the officer was trying to be nice, but if anyone pointed a gun at an officer i think it best to open fire at that person
nraugzajxyooj 5 months ago
This is why cops die... failure to act. This guy put himself and his partners in danger and should not be on the street.

He was upgraded to stable condition but last report said he could lose his right eye. It happened in Conroe, Texas

That officer was a hero.
herpshnerp 6 months ago
@herpshnerp The officer was a DUMB ASS....look at the comment of a police officer ROKASSAN. he should have BEEN shot that guy.. as a result of his BLATANT STUPIDITY he almost lost his life and hes a HERO?
Mrepifany 5 months ago
@Mrepifany yes, that is exactly the point, he purposely RISKED his OWN LIFE to try to give this man all the time he could to put the gun down so he would not have to shoot him. Yes, he could have shot him immediately and it would have been "justifiable," but guess what, each human being on this planet has a value to their life, whether you like it, or they deserve it, they do. This officer respected that man's life by giving him as many chances to live as he could, and for that he IS a hero.

ninjarider84 6 months ago
@ninjarider84 you obviously have never been trained. You are responsible for every projectile that comes out of that gun!!!! whats in the backdrop? a fucking strip mall with huge glass windows, filled with people that want to see the action. He is a great police officer and did exactly what he was trained to do. Idk what department trained you (if any), but I feel bad for the citizens it “protects”.

Man...not many cops i personally dont believe would have not shot this guy on site or even kill him. i hope the officer is well!
lonbites 7 months ago
This is what happens when police try to be nice to crazy people... Don't get me wrong I completely respect the officer for trying to save that "man's" life... but look what happened...
... Now the REAL Sad part is if the cop shot first How many A-holes on here would be screaming for his badge because he shot someone that didn't pose a threat.

In regards to: "lazarusthehucast" :

Mrepifany 7 months ago
This is a RARE, GOOD officer however. He did what was right.
lazarusthehucast 7 months ago
That officer is a better man than I. I would have let 'er as soon as he pointed that shotgun at me.

Trendwin 8 months ago 48
@Trendwin Shut the fuck up pussy. No cop is a hero, and only works for money, theirself, and their family. They build up big ass egos, only to be shot down for abusing their power half the time. There are good cops, and there are bad cops. Everyone gets what is coming to them one way or another, and for good cops its good things. For bad cops, its a casket and a sad family. The truth hurts, get over it.

@k4ldh Never ever second guess someones action when you weren't there. Yes thats what should have probably of happened but when you are in a stressful sitation like that sometimes you don't do things by the books because of the stress. Unless you have been there before its hard to understand
jsbaker6415 4 months ago
If it was me as the cop I would have said .."put the gun do...boom boom. No waiting for the guy to shoot me first. Gotta give the cop a thumbs up for waiting but he should of just shot him. No questions asked . Just demand the gun be put down once and if not bang he would be shot first. I t does not matter if he want to die by suicide cop shooting. Just get it over with and get the shift done.
lewandlo 8 months ago
@lewandlo - I am a Cop, and if someone points a gun at me... there is no "put the gun down". You point a gun at me, you are getting shot. As seen in this video, you don't try and talk to someone pointing a gun at you. You protect your life and the life of those around you. It's a good thing you are not a Police Officer lewandlo, because I would never want you watching my back.
teton152 8 months ago
@teton152 Did you understand what I said?? It would have been he has a gun boom. You need to read before you shoot me down heheheh. There would have been no questions ,just shoot him before he shoots you or some one else..

It's amazing how this turns out . When Police officers discharge their weapons people start shouting police brutality and questioning why they had to use excessive force. Now here is a classic example of when they should have shot this murfucka but yet they showed extreme restraint . I nothing but utmost respect for Police men and women for the wonderful job they do. I hope this officer made it alive. Good riddance to bad rubbish on that bastard !
ogamike 8 months ago 2
Jeez, to the comments saying he should of been shot straight away, not all police are trigger happy nut-cases that want to get into gun fights. The best way to resolve an issue is to apply as less force as possible.
Andy9742 8 months ago
@Andy9742 - Wrong. By pointing a gun at a Police Officer, THAT is lethal force. The Officer should have fired the moment the suspect pointed the gun at him. He would have been justified by his training, and by court ruling. You obviously are not law enforcement, please refrain from commenting on subjects in which you have no understanding.
teton152 8 months ago
I think because the guy took so long to point the gun and to shoot the police figured the guy was just trying to get them to kill him -in a suicide by cop. Maybe that is why it took so long for officer to do what they had to do.
I am not sure but I think I saw this on TV and the officer lost one eye.
IamtheBurceDickenson 8 months ago
