  • Loved this the first time I heard it. What a great pop classic from the Finn boys! Damn, I miss them and the 80's. Great Music and Interesting Videos!

  • MY FAVORITE FROM THEM. SUCH A MEMORABLE MELODY.

  • the pioneer bit at the start really freaks me out... i don't know why.

  • @Jay4P Just go with it!

  • great tune, but a copy of a September 1968 hit for Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich called "The Wreck of the Antoinette" same tune same theme its on Youtube

  • @dawalt009 not really This is no One Fine Day/My Sweet Lord thing. I would call it inspiration but the Jolly Roger musical fling is traditional with no owner and the bridge has nothing to do with Leaky Boat. Vocal range is a coincidence with the engineer most likely responsible if anyone for similarities beyond the obvious.

  • @AnnaMayWongSociety my dear Anna May do you not understand this song came about because the Finn bros. heard the tune "The wreck of the Antoinette" on NZ radio back in 1968/1969, it actually reached no.1 on the charts in NZ. When I meant theme, I meant sail ship theme, just ask Men At Work about minor note copies and what can happen with plagiarism. I don't believe the engineer had anything to do with the obvious, I love Split Enz this is a great song, just making apoint

  • @dawalt009 I see no difference in points but for you want to say it is a copy which only a land lubber split enz hater would use to demean the FInn's. Also since you want to remove the obvious apparently not recognizing the mix and equalization of voices has as much to do with your thinking this is a copy, I have to stop and let readers decide. Now I will go back to my Auto-Tune station full of the newest hit after hit with original beats and tunes 24 hours a day

  • love,love,love split enz.NZ through & through.

  • You've ruined the original sound. Compression is not HD.

  • @zembryoz I would not even attempt to compare anything on the internet to be worthy of "original sound", Playing sound wizard is a touchy thing and my first clue that you are not a good critique is your focus on the word "compression" ,there is none added here. I find your own stuff truly in need of a professional's touch so I suggest you go to a Sydney Sound School to catch up with your ego, For now I pay more attention to the posts and likes by 34,000 others.

  • @AnnaMayWongSociety The apps and plugins you're using all have compressors on them, you just lack the knowledge to comprehend what's happening in the mix you've made. You can't even hear Tim's vocals properly. Your likes aren't generated by your sound but by the fame and success of the song which you've mangled.

  • @zembryoz typical ego inflamed hard head. You ignored what I said as well as any comment reading relevant to this. I know what I said and your reply confirms an all too common trait of ongoing denial while preaching from within a little box, I see this frequently on YouTube by amateurs, stop crying and put up or shut up. Go to a sound engineering school and with some luck you may be able to correct your own less then admirable posted offerings,

  • @AnnaMayWongSociety There was nothing egotistical in my response and I've actually done professional audio production in TV, Radio and Video Games.

  • @zembryoz you are full of it! Go back back to your gaming, eating vacations and ultra low views for all your work. Keep your day job and try your internet bullying tactics somewhere else, you will not pull that on this site.

  • @AnnaMayWongSociety I made a criticism and you insulted me and my work. Bullying mixed with egotism is your tactic mate, not mine.

  • @zembryoz oh the sensitive artist behind the bully mask. Here's the deal, you keep your few thousand views on your site and I will keep my 4,000,000 happy viewers and bid you farewell with a laugh.

  • @AnnaMayWongSociety It's not a competition. :(

  • (HD)

    Hi

    Dung

  • Production values were so ahead of thier time, so much going on but every layer as important as the next! Like Paul Macartney said, when asked what it was like to be the best song writer, "you'd better ask Neil Finn"

  • This band is ledgendary, they should have been bigger than the Beatles. Love all their music, the Finns no how to write a good tune.

  • That's the guy from close up right. Mike Sainsbury?

  • The last minute of the tune is magical. the chord structure is beautiful. what a great tune from such an innovative band.

  • @steveblackqwell Incredible. I remember when this song first came out and they would always cut the song right before that devastating ending. I remember hearing the ending for the first time on Z100 here in NYC and the DJ afterwards mentioned that was strange never heard that part before. Great song, and yes as much as they denied it, they did have "progressive rock" tendencies.

  • Right there with Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone" at the top of the heap of so many wonderful MTv videos during its pre-Viacom golden age. Thank you for posting this excellent recapture.

  • LOVE THIS! THanks for posting.

  • Aotearoa, rugged individual.

  • Thanks! The best I;ve ever heard it sound...the layers come through splendidly

  • @ulfhirtha always so nice to hear someone hears

  • the new zealand natives look beautifull lol

  • skip to 2:45 for the song

  • One persons leaky boat sank!

  • Hmm, looks like Tim Finn's ex-wife gave this a thumbs-down. :-)

  • Thanks for posting this classic !!!

  • The 80's were FUN.

  • @CoonShoot

I would consider that an understatement my friend.

  • @CoonShoot

With a name like that I'm sure you had plenty of fun :P

  • My third mate introduced me to this song.

  • Best tune they ever did. I use to wait forever for MTV to play this when I was a child.

  • @100100911 :

    I prefer your previous post.

  • Best tune they ever tune. I use to wait forever for MTV to play this when I was a child.

  • miguel de unamuno!

  • Now this looks great!!!!! Thanks for posting...

  • Perfect imitation of a polynesian native at 5:08...

  • @sirlovemehard the polynesian native is from new zealand their maori people lol

  • I have always been a hugh fan of this song and especially the artists ... How good is this music and the piano is brilliant.

  • Totally awesome, don't know what more to say, I'll enjoy:)

  • Compare and contrast this song and video with "The Colours" by The Men They Couldn't Hang.....

  • @Wiganmaher :

Good lyrics apparently, but I prefer this music. Makes me think of Leonard Cohen: Great lyrics, but his music leaves some to be desired. :)

  • This song moves me every time I hear it. So gorgeous.

  • I love this video! I remember how blown away I was seeing it for the first time. Had me a crush on Tim after this one!

  • Fantastic. In the summer of 1985, I was a diesel mechanic in the Canadian Navy Reserves onboard the HMCS Port St Jean and this was our unofficial ship's song for that great summer. What a bunch of bums we were that summer.

  • @pinemikey "And to the public, we are the rabble, we are the swinish multitude. But we can still rearrange the colours of the red and the white and the blue.."

  • The harmonies starting in the second verse are. awesome.

  • is it soooo important ... what if they were pomies - after all, great song still - and it's 30 years.. great song

  • I've always loved this song. The piano at the end is very haunting and beautiful. When I had kids, they became fans of the Wiggles. Imagine my surprise when Neil Finn showed up in one of their videos and sang it with them. I'm still not sure what to make of that, but it's not the worst cover ever.

  • Umm, was Split Enz part Australian...interesting. I guess John Howard came from Whakatane.

  • @mrhaymack why is it that Kiwis get so possessive about an artist that had to quit NZ cos they had no hope of making it there?

  • This song has a great melody and clever lyrics. What is it with these Austrians that they have such great bands like Split Enz and actors like Noah Taylor (Flirting, He died with a Falafel in His Hand)

  • Noah T. is Australian, Split Enz were from New Zealand, Unamuno was a Spanish poet.

  • i wish someone would cover this, i really like the melody haha. they were genius

  • the wiggles did a cover. Has to be seen to be believed.

  • little birdy has a cover of this song..

  • You are awesome for posting this!

    <3

  • Great quality for a great song, Thanks for sharing.
