Hollow Ichi says that he _is_ Zangetsu, and whomever wields more power is the one that lends Ichigo strength. Zangetsu gives Ichigo some healing (Kenpachi fight, holds the blood back), while Hollow Ichigo gives strength using the power of inner darkness. Yes, it is half and half.
