Hi, I enjoyed your review of this camera. I was impressed by your clear descriptions and the pace of the video. I want to buy one of these cameras but I notice there is now a TZ20. Do you plan to do a review of that model?
Thank you so much!! I am thinking of getting this one or the Casio s95. I have 4 young boys that won't stay still, and I read this one is faster but the casio has a larger image sensor (clearer pictures). Which one would be best??
@TheeTrinityCreation Do you mean the Canon S95? That one does have a slightly bugger sensor, a little better quality and control, but the ultimate camera for parents in my opinion at the moment is the Nikon J1 - see my Nikon V1 review at cameralabs . com which covers both models.
but how can u transfer GPS data on your laptop. I want all my pictures to display time , date and location, it does on the camera but not on my laptop. thanks
@Bondgirl2312 The time, date and co-ordinates are stored in the file and can be read by certain programs. You won't get the placenames which are shown on the camera, but you will be able to plot the position on a map.
@Bondgirl2312 I'd have a play with Google Earth first, try googling 'how to enter GPS co-ordinates on Google Earth' or 'placing GPS images on maps'...
Thanks for the great review. I'm a little surprised that so much of the video is about the GPS and only a few seconds on the manual controls. I've been shooting for years and a GPS is the last thing I'd ever want or need in a camera. I always know where I am. However, manual controls on a pocket camera are quite revolutionary and this is of great importance. I guess I'll go to your site to learn more about that. Thanks again though.
@mittsdad Hi pete, as you've hopefully dfiscovered by now, these videos are just brief tasters. The main info is in my written reviews at cameralabs . com - there's a direct link to the review under the video.

Can you turn off the stabilisation or fix the jurkiness somehow? I'm trying to justify upgrading from my TZ7 but its obvious as you've stated that the TZ10 has an issue with stabilisation when zooming on video mode.
Would you guys recommend this camera over the S95 or not? i want something with allot of manual controlls when i want to take more 'arty' pictures so i need something with the choice to have everything controlled but i still want it to be able to have all the auto functions that a camera should have
.i'm now looking for a new camera & was thinking about the Olympus SZ-30MR Digital Camera but i'm unsure what to do because this camera looks so good as well ......... .great review mate!!
Gordon, I've purchased 3 cameras based on your reviews. You are allways spot on ,and for me you give the best video and text reviews of many I've consulted.
Hi Gordon. I have this camera but can't seem to get the videos transferred onto my laptop. I've tried connecting it to both my mac and toshiba by USB and SD card but no video files show up. What can I do?
What type of file do you convert the AVCHD video files into? I have been converting mine using iSkysoft video converting and converting the file into .mp4 HD files but am unimpressed with most of the videos looking pixelated. Does anyone know what the ideal file format would be to get the best quality videos? Thanks this has been bothering me since I purchased the camera.
why say that tz10/Zs7?? Pliz help me, i want buy this camera but tz10 not sell anymore, and is the same Function and specification of zs7??? Thanks a lot for ur reviews helps so much
The problem on this compact (like all TZ series) is that it does NOT supports RAW image standard, so it takes pictures in compressing data and losing much details. A very very negative point because if I take pictures it is also to record "good" pictures, not images that look fuzzy !
I've had my TZ10 for about half a year now. I'm blown away with how well it can zoom. If you want to take really professional shots, do not use the auto function. You need to learn what ISO does, how to control aperature and exposure manually and you will be amazed at how superior and lush the results are as opposed to keeping it on auto.
Excellent comprehensive review as always. I have two questions: I read in another review that TZ10's image quality is very ordinary and with GPS on (which is automatically even when the camera is switched off) is very low. What is your opinion? (or rather anyone who have used this camera).
I have watched your TZ7 review and when comparing these two in video mode the sound is much better on the TZ7! The video quality also looks better with more colours and not as washed out as the TZ10... Is this so or is it something else that plays in?
Hey there! :) Is there any camera like the TZ10 without those blue lights @ 06:05 for example? I need one with great zoom which takes also clear pics and videos at low light. Thanks.
Hello. I am sorry if this question has been asked, but you see... I bough this camera for a mix of things, but one of the main important reason was so I could record some clips.
The problem is though, just 3 minutes of clips is taking 260mb. I want to send these clips to friend, but being that big, there is no way I can send them without it taking a long time.

Have you got an indication on how long you can actually take videos with one battery charge? Because the best quality would be no good to me if I had to change the battery every 15 minutes while filming. Thanks. =)
@cameralabs HI, I have a question about the video. Do you think the camera still uses optical stabilisation in video mode or does it only do the digital stabilisation?
Is it possible to turn off digital stabilisation in video mode, that really looked terrible when you were panning & the picture was jerking the way it was.
This is a good camera. I have the previous version (TZ7) and I know two people who bought the TZ10 after seeing my camera. It got me more interested in photography and I ended getting an DSLR.
@nazbilah From what I have seen there is not much difference in quality between them. Though according a PCWorld review the TZ7 has sharper images. The bonus of TZ10 is that you get manual controls for shutter and aperture. The thing is I also have a DSLR so I dont really need the manual controls, all I need is a point and shoot out of this camera. Therefore the TZ7 suits my needs better. I dont really care much for the GPS feature on the TZ10.
Ive recently bought this camera , can you give me example of what setting to use for best results videoing in low light ,indoors? is it true that any movies done on AVCHDlite cannot be played on DVD players? Appreciate any help with these questions.
This is the best review there is for this camera!!! I was trying to buy a cam for my sister, and my research brought me to the Canon 210 and this, and i had already planned to buy this one due to its superior image and vid quality. After this review, i for sure know i've made the right decision!!! Thanx :)
@muzzmackay I agree with you. I think this review is great. I have seen another review of his. Every time I see this guy I get excited because he always makes a good review.
2 questions. First of all, if you use the GPS feature on a picture and then upload it to the computer, what happens? Can you still see the location and if so, can you get rid of it later if you want? Second of all, what's the best way to get at least 50 mins. of video? Should I buy a really really big memory card? Thanks.
Hi, does this camera have auto audio recording level adjust during video to avoid clipping (distortion) in loud settings such as at clubs and live concerts? My SD1100 has it but S90 does not and still not sure about S95... so I was also wondering for this camera. It could make or break a video hence a very important feature for me. I enjoyed your review, thanks!
Why do they all start to make make cameras exclusively with built-in batteries just like all the MP3 players nowadays. I find this really frustrating. I want a camera (and an MP3 player) with an AA battery so I can use it as long as I want. It's much easier to buy another pair of AA batteries in a nearby shop or to buy an additional pair of rechargeable AA batteries than to go home and recharge the camera.
@Isoik YEH! I agree! I'm thinking to buy a digital camera... the only camera i like with AA batteries is Canon Powershot SX20 IS but it is big... i want a good camera with AA batteries!!
@kockgunner That depends on the brand and amount of mAh. Sanyo (Eneloop) batteries for example are ideal for digital cameras. You can do a long time with two pairs of Eneloops. There are also other brands worth mentioning, such as Energizer 2500mAh etc. which if I'm not mistakes are Sanyo batteries but under their own brand. Note that Eneloops are rechargeable batteries.
@Isoik I know, I hate it when I go to a concert and I intend to film certain songs, but I cant because the battery runs out. If it ran on AA's, then I could just put a new pair in.
TQ Gordon, I am fully in appreciation mode resulting from yr great & concise 15mins-plus review . I may soon consider this model, as upgrade on my Lumix FX 07 which I 1st started my Lumix experience in 2007. I have since this Spring, bought the Samsung WB650 with GPS but discovered, no HD value and VERY upsetting and poor support on their geo-tagging as well as uploads for the gps download software.
This review caption did indeed brought great memories we spent in NZ (north & south islands).
I recorded a video in Motion JPEG, HD. 4:17 minutes took up 982 mb, is that normal? Also when I play the movie right off my memory card on my PC, it's decent quality but it def. does not look 1080p or 720p, the writing on the pictures on my wall is kinda blurry from 7 feet away, also I am using two different cards, both are doing this, Scandisk Ultra II HD, and a PNY-HD Optima, both SDHC cards. Do I need to install the software it came with to get the 1080p quality?
@311Vision To get the best use 16:9 mode and yes install the software it helps with mp4 processing my TZ5 at 9.1 mp uses around 990mb for 7 minutes of 720P video, to get the most of the camera you need a class 10 card
Thanks for a very detailed review. Seen your website where you essentially tie for first place the TZ10 and the Sony HX5. As I'm trying to decide between the two essentially on picture quality (colors & detail) which of the two would you recommend? Many thanks from Italy!
@longjevity1 ~~~ That was my experience too with XP but after trying it out on another lappy that is W7, it detects by default and you will see both options available. :))
Check out my recent concert captions {Santana Concert 2010 @ Arnhem, NL, appox. 2 hrs viewing A thru N} taken with a Samsung WB650 despite having a HD vid camera on hand from a Sanyo Xacti CG10.
I bought a Panasonic Lumix TZ10 a mere 7 days ago. It's taken no more than 100 photo's and the zoom has locked in the extended position, the monitor doesn't work and there is a clicking noise audible when it is powered up. It has been kept in a bespoke Lumix case, hasn't been subject to any knocks, moisture or excesses of temperature. All in all, HUGELY disappointing, especially as I now have no means by which to record the rest of my holiday.
excellent detailed review. one thing I wish would be included in more reviews was how the cameras microphone records in situations with loud music. most audio recording becomes distorted at high volume, but some have limiters which normalize the levels. anyhow, thanks!
@KevinKevKev2 hello, how is the audio quality on a concert? i want to but this camera ro record one? do you like the videos? isnt the video lagging or something please reply asap,

@tigersteve1 No, you'll really need a DSLR to successfully capture the northern lights. BTW, I recommend heading up to Tromsoe and using Kjetil Skogli as a guide.
gordon you're doing an excellent review, can you do a review about the panasonic fz100, i have this camera. i just want to know more about this camera. thank you..
@comjuka yuo have the fz100 thats awsome!!! take some videos and upload them i want to see how the 1080p performs!!! thanks and have fun with that wonderfull camera!
many thanks for your excellent reviews here. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. As a result me and a colleague from work here in Germany bought this camera and we are very pleased with it. Actually the same colleague visited Queenstown in March 2008 without bringing any camera along and I turned green with envy because I could not come along either....
I got this camera today and was really excited cuz I've been researching youtube on the quality of the video and focus. I did not do an outdoor landscape test yet (will tomorrow) but I was using indoors in my house and the focus was all over the place?! the focus didn't hold when I zoomed and picture wasn't as sharp? I hope it's not defective :(
Thanks for the review. Is there a difference between the one which carries the Panasonic name under the flash ( less price on Amazon.com) or the one where it is written LUMIX instead of panasonic? What do you think about Amazon price ( 290$ !!! ) ? thanks for the clear talk particularly for us as nonnative English speakers. TA from Canada
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this is quite a deceiving review. there is a big issue with the picture quality yet he fails to mention it. don't believe this guy when he doesn't provide you with the cons of the camera
@dubio9 As I said in the video, I do all the image quality comparisons in my review at cameralabs . com - this video is just one small part of my whole review. Please pay attention next time.

Another fantastic review. I am currently looking for a new camera and I cannot decide between the Canon SX210 IS or the Panasonic TZ8.
Which is your opinion is the better camera for still shooting (video recording is far from a priority for me, hence the TZ8 over the TZ10)?

Why can't they put this zoom in the LX5!?!?
kockgunner 1 year ago
Thanks a lot for this review. Are your going to do the same with the Sony WX5 ?
The TZ10 video samples on the web seem much better than the WX5 ones... :-/

mileycyruslvr101 1 year ago
2 questions. First of all, if you use the GPS feature on a picture and then upload it to the computer, what happens? Can you still see the location and if so, can you get rid of it later if you want? Second of all, what's the best way to get at least 50 mins. of video? Should I buy a really really big memory card? Thanks.
mileycyruslvr101 1 year ago
Hi, does this camera have auto audio recording level adjust during video to avoid clipping (distortion) in loud settings such as at clubs and live concerts? My SD1100 has it but S90 does not and still not sure about S95... so I was also wondering for this camera. It could make or break a video hence a very important feature for me. I enjoyed your review, thanks!
kiman2 1 year ago
Why do they all start to make make cameras exclusively with built-in batteries just like all the MP3 players nowadays. I find this really frustrating. I want a camera (and an MP3 player) with an AA battery so I can use it as long as I want. It's much easier to buy another pair of AA batteries in a nearby shop or to buy an additional pair of rechargeable AA batteries than to go home and recharge the camera.

@Isoik I agree!!
mileycyruslvr101 1 year ago
@mileycyruslvr101 Luckily for us the best photo camera brand still makes them: Canon
Isoik 1 year ago
@Isoik YEH! I agree! I'm thinking to buy a digital camera... the only camera i like with AA batteries is Canon Powershot SX20 IS but it is big... i want a good camera with AA batteries!!
arnaud92pt 1 year ago
@arnaud92pt There's also the smaller Canon PowerShot SX120 IS
Isoik 1 year ago
@Isoik It's probably because of the size. I also thought the newer batteries last longer than regular AAs?
kockgunner 1 year ago
@kockgunner That depends on the brand and amount of mAh. Sanyo (Eneloop) batteries for example are ideal for digital cameras. You can do a long time with two pairs of Eneloops. There are also other brands worth mentioning, such as Energizer 2500mAh etc. which if I'm not mistakes are Sanyo batteries but under their own brand. Note that Eneloops are rechargeable batteries.
Isoik 1 year ago
@Isoik erm.. size maybe? lol
TheMoo1231 1 year ago
@Isoik I know, I hate it when I go to a concert and I intend to film certain songs, but I cant because the battery runs out. If it ran on AA's, then I could just put a new pair in.

what camcorder video-camera are you using to film the intro, with you talking?

311Vision 1 year ago
@311Vision It doesn't do 1080p. Please see the video section in my review at cameralabs . com to find out all the details and settings.
cameralabs 1 year ago
@311Vision To get the best use 16:9 mode and yes install the software it helps with mp4 processing my TZ5 at 9.1 mp uses around 990mb for 7 minutes of 720P video, to get the most of the camera you need a class 10 card

Hmm im deciding between tz10 and the new ixus hs 1000... which can take better photos under concert settings or nite?
fizzna5 1 year ago
Thanks for a very detailed review. Seen your website where you essentially tie for first place the TZ10 and the Sony HX5. As I'm trying to decide between the two essentially on picture quality (colors & detail) which of the two would you recommend? Many thanks from Italy!

how do I save my videos from my tz10 to computer as they show up as pics?
longjevity1 1 year ago
@longjevity1 ~~~ That was my experience too with XP but after trying it out on another lappy that is W7, it detects by default and you will see both options available. :))
Check out my recent concert captions {Santana Concert 2010 @ Arnhem, NL, appox. 2 hrs viewing A thru N} taken with a Samsung WB650 despite having a HD vid camera on hand from a Sanyo Xacti CG10.

if you have a 8 GB card, how many photos can you have in your camera more or less? thank you
arnaud92pt 1 year ago
I bought a Panasonic Lumix TZ10 a mere 7 days ago. It's taken no more than 100 photo's and the zoom has locked in the extended position, the monitor doesn't work and there is a clicking noise audible when it is powered up. It has been kept in a bespoke Lumix case, hasn't been subject to any knocks, moisture or excesses of temperature. All in all, HUGELY disappointing, especially as I now have no means by which to record the rest of my holiday.

Thanks a lot for the review. It was very helpful and cause of this I bought this camera. Ask a cut from Panasonic :-)))
gordonmatthewsumner 1 year ago
excellent detailed review. one thing I wish would be included in more reviews was how the cameras microphone records in situations with loud music. most audio recording becomes distorted at high volume, but some have limiters which normalize the levels. anyhow, thanks!

So,i have a PAnasonic camcorder TM700 and a compact camera Sony DSC-HX5V and i will bring a tripod with. But noone of those s a DSLR.Does it mean a reflex device (Camera or camcorder? with interchangable lens? If so do you think not even the TM700 will be ok for the aurora????

@tigersteve1 No, you'll really need a DSLR to successfully capture the northern lights. BTW, I recommend heading up to Tromsoe and using Kjetil Skogli as a guide.

Hi Gordon,
many thanks for your excellent reviews here. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. As a result me and a colleague from work here in Germany bought this camera and we are very pleased with it. Actually the same colleague visited Queenstown in March 2008 without bringing any camera along and I turned green with envy because I could not come along either....
Keep up the good work.
