When Kakarot made it earth he hit his head really hard as a baby and it changes his nature- instead of clearing earth of all possible resistance he was friendly- then was adopted by an old man named who named him goku. So anyway Kakarot grows up and Vegeta who is from the original planet(Actually the prince of that planet)- never knew him as anything besides kakarot.
