  • That part of 'Never Enough' makes me shit off my pants

  • "im just too sick" 2:40 ;)

  • Comment removed

  • awesome...!!

  • Mike is one of the most talented drumers.. his inspiration is awesome and fits with johns inspiration so well.. DT is a miracle

  • mr. nothing special shut up.

  • Portnoy fan but these are skills easily obtained through practice. Also, I don't think Mike is the best drummer in the world by any means, in my opinion it is Gavin Harrison.

  • You guy's need to watch some Max Roach on a hi-hat if you want to see some mad skill's!

  • phantom towel 2:48. mike is so magical that when he needs a towel, one appears for him

  • Where the hell is Constant Motion at.....?

  • Hah, pretty ridicolous overplaying in the first song.. it's a ballad for christ sake.. and his double stroke roll is totally weak.. MP's creativity has declined for years, he uses the same tricks in every song. And many people who have met him say that he is also a total asshole and primadonna.

I think replacing him with Mangini was a great choice, maybe it opens your fanboy-eyes...

  • who knows what the snare on the left is?

  • Portnoy without a beard looks weird a bit

  • soooo glad that someone posted this video! this truly shows that Portnoy is and always will be one of the best and most melodic drummers of all time! : )

  • better than lars ulrich thats enough to be said.

  • Whats the first song?

  • @drowzy721 "these walls" from octavarium

  • "There is nothing special here"

Yeah, sure, you are totally right, besides, Mike Portnoy is not even a good drummer, right? Who is he, btw? He is just a guy that recorded more than 40 albums, 18 albums just with Dream Theater, 3 Instructional DVDs, 10 self filmed performances and endorsed by Tama, Sabian, Evans and Pro Mark.

You must be the good one, right?

Shut up and enjoy the video, fool.

  • Can i ask where the fuck is Constant Motion part 3:48?

  • to all the guys who said this can be done with 3+ years of drumming...i bet you guys can, but can u guys really create this patterns? i mean, its completely different to play something than creating it. Damn trollers

  • @DT2BLZ damn right, give me 3 years of playing traditional and jazz music and i bet i could play anything.

  • @DT2BLZ

Imo Portnoy plays for himself, not the song.

  • @tomasborralho that's the dumbest thing you could ever say.. probably you are NOT a drummer..

  • @DT2BLZ EXACTLY OASDKHASDKAHSDJHAS SOOO TRUE!

  • @DT2BLZ THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HITTING THAT NAIL ON THE HEAD!!!!! i hate to bring up something that tends to be controversial on portnoys vids but i argue that same point with many people who talk smack on The Rev from avenged sevenfold. one of his favorites was portnoy and he was extremely creative on and off the drums... people take these great drummers for granted!

  • @DT2BLZ Actually, I don't think this can be played with 3 years of drumming. One can maybe play the notes approximately right, but playing it precisely and making it sound good takes a lifetime.

  • @DT2BLZ Everyones talking crap.. It would probably take you three years to Learn these songs and play them with the same sort of fluency.

  • @DT2BLZ hey - we all not Mike Portnoy. All that we say is that we CAN play it - and it's fairly easy to play much more complicated things. Nobody's talking about creating a parts. And it's wrong to talk about it - we are not in Dream Theater and never was. All that we say it's not difficult. And of course it's very musical. I caught myself realizing that I've playing all 6/8 songs like that...It's like second nature. Same as left-hand flams...(talking about myself)

  • @robressource ok dummy, u learn that skill in 3-4 years ???? kiddin ??? pls stop telling fairy tales. LOL. World have enough from faggots shit talking. so pls : STFU

  • I partially agree with @RobResource. Skill-wise it's not that special, but still, it's Mike Motherfucking Portnoy, he's an awesome drummer and I don't think just anyone could come up with these kind of hi-hat patterns.

Also, there plenty of hi-hat parts that do require a lot of skill, like those in The Dance of Eternity, for example.

  • @MIKEPORNTOY Now i understand your username... MIKE.PORN.TOY

  • Portnoy has an unfair advantage over other drummers: a third leg.

  • Lang, Minnemann, Weckl, Chambers and Horacio 'el negro' all put this guy in his place and make him seem like an average drummer. As far as the genre is concerned, he's up there but in terms of musicians/artists, Portnoy is not on my list.

  • wtf is so awsome about these hihat hittings ?? wtf .. nothing special at all

  • I'm sorry but what is so MAD about this? He's basically playing some very basic stuff on the hihat which everyone can do if they've played for 3-4 years. I'm not bashing him, I just don't get why everyone is praising THIS video when it's really NOTHING special. There's nothing mad about it at all.

  • @RobResource ok mr "nothing special" :)

  • @DT2BLZ ever heard of thomas lang?

  • @DT2BLZ dude hes just mixing up double and single stroke rolls on the high hat and splashes and shit. Go look up Chris coleman and come back and tell me how good mike is after.

  • @DT2BLZ He says everyone can do it but not many at all actually do it, say, in a song. Most drummers, even those who can REPLICATE all that Portnoy did in this video, composes songs by repeating the same boring popular patterns on drums, over and over. In that respect, Mike Portnoy's drumming, alone, is a good reason to listen to Dream Theater... in other bands drummers don't really do much other than melting into the background, most of the time (or abusing of the bass drums, depending).

  • @DT2BLZ Great cover man!! don't listen to this inexperience fag up there,. He clearly don't play drums hahaha I play drums and Realize how hard this is, he don't have video playing drums, and say this easy a sign he don't play!

  • @rickyelementsk8er so if someone doesn't have a video in his channel of himself playing something, that means he doesn't play anything? hahaha i like your logic XD you tube must be a window of your life... bitch please...

  • @tommasotemporin MISTER PIG HAHAHAHAHAHAHA what a band XD

  • @rickyelementsk8er i know, the name is funny ;) but the components are giorgio "JT" terenziani, michele luppi and michele vioni, go check who they are ;) by the way i'm not the drummer of that band

  • @RobResource I agree that although not technically difficult, he has an incredible presence in the pocket. Tons of drummers out there nowadays can play technical but don't have the groove/feel that is organic. I hate nothing more than drummers that hear but don't listen, and play for the song and not against the groove.. Just my humble opinion.

  • @sahme001 +1000 to that!!

  • @RobResource It is a hi-hat video, what were you expecting? the Portnoy would point a finger at it and make it explode? would that be mad enough for you?

  • @TheBognordave I was expecting a hi-hat video that showed MAD skills. This doesn't. Don't get me wrong, it's good and he plays good - Portnoy's a monster but there's nothing mad or impossible about this particular video.

  • @RobResource I agree it aint MAD but if the title was mike portnoy playing various hihat patterns really rather well, it would not get 116,000 hits I bet! can't imagine what could be really mad on a hihat because at the end of the day all you can is hit it, open closed or foot it, maybe smash it with a john petruccis guitar now that would be MAD. btw don't click any video entitled 'impossible drum solo by mike portmoy' because u will be dissapointed that it is not actually impossible. stay cool.

  • @RobResource it might not seem like much, but he plays it with great smoothness and precision that some people can never achieve, like myself ahaha. quite bitching and just enjoy

  • @ryanoneill91 spell fail me

  • @RobResource yeah but no fucking man on this Earth can put a beat like that together... thats the impressive part dude.

  • @RobResource AAAND he would kick your vagina with a broken pencil and 3 pot lids

  • @RobResource yea bro, your right but the MAD about this is no the skill itself, because if you sit in your drums a couple months u cant play this skills and more, but the MAD about the video is the imagination to create this parts

  • @RobResource dude i'm with you, there's nothing that special going on here, none of it is particularly easy, i know people who've been playing about 5 years who can do more intricate hat work than this, definitely nothing "mad" about this.

  • @RobResource I cant do most of it after 3 1/2 years now :/

  • @RobResource lol, i see you dont know anything to drumming..ive been played drums 10years 2/3 of my life, and i can say that's not so easy how you think.

  • @RobResource it isnt hard, its just quite a bit to remember. the reason why people praise mike portnoys drums is because the drums are loud enough in every song for you to hear every little sound he makes. It sort of over powers everything grabs your attention and gets in your face. Dude mike is a show boat he wants to be heard. I'm not saying hes a bad drummer hes great and it fits that kind of music perfectly and awesome. But yea i agree with your statement.

  • @RobResource So true :)

  • @RobResource It is also his technique wich is very admirable. And if you are saying this easy, you are quite wrong, because some parts are actually really difficult!

  • @RobResource like DT2BLZ said, it's more about coming up with the patterns than just playing them...

  • @RobResource Its great how its intricate but also fits with the other parts of the music so well.

  • @RobResource well.... i have been playing for 3-4 years, why can't i do 1/2 these things? uhmm probobly because i try and get the accented notes and bass drums notes spot on, WHILE attempting these things portnoy does on the hi-hat. if i sat down in front of a hi-hat and just it, maybe i could play these... so ya, this is special... k bye

  • @RobResource I'd really like to see someone doing Stream of Consciousness justice. And I don't mean just the beginning but the second clip the uploader put up as well.

  • @RobResource Hahaha....are you stupid? Portnoy created these patterns and your comment proves that you dont have any understandning of being creative from scratch...LAME comment!

  • @RobResource I agree, any drummer with 5 years practice can play the same amount of notes. It just sounds like a crapfest, but hey, they're playing it! Right? The accuracy and dynamic shown here are beyond what a beginner can play, on any drumset with any kind of recording equipment.

  • ส้นตีน

  • skinny cactus jack 5:48

  • Thumbs up if u think he looks just like Marco Sfogli in this vid :)

  • Mmmh, waht You think about Mike Terrana or Chris Lang or...Mangini?:-)

  • Portoy's the best.

  • dream theatre would be better as an instrumental band.. I'm not a fan of their singer, he sucks

  • @kyle3420 Then you're obviously NOT a Vocalist...You don't even know the difference.

  • @einarabelc5 No, he just sucks.

  • @kyle3420 Show me YOU can sing Pull me Under and then tell me he sucks. You probably don't even know what he did to himself.

  • @einarabelc5 lol I don't care, I just think their vocalist sucks

  • Ok, opinions are like crap.

  • @einarabelc5 well the guy below me agrees...

  • @kyle3420 The point that he was making was that James LaBrie definitely does not 'suck'. I admit, you either love or hate his voice, it's too whiny, or girly-sounding for some, it's definitely unique, no doubt about it, however, as a vocalist, his high notes are incredibly impressive and require a solid singing technique, I don't think you can claim that anyone capable of Labrie's notes are bad singers.

  • @kyle3420 agreed

  • @kyle3420 liquid tension experiment. its dream theater without the singer

  • very good dude

  • he is going to get back to DT, im sure

  • bad drummer

    average drummer

    good drummer

    f**ing awsome drummer

    god of drums

    [huge gap]

    mike portnoy

  • @lordjanko Why such a huge gap between Vinnie and Portnoy? Strange.

  • Comment removed

  • @lordjanko you forgot chuck norris before the huge gap.

  • You know, I was all gung ho about hearing Mangini with DT, and then after about 2 weeks I realized there is NO energy, or if there is it is completely the opposite of what we know from DT. I hope MP does come back, BUT with a change of attitude and an open mind

  • @SeanAsheOfficial Agreed!!! I called it PORTNOY has a BETTER tone. Mangini is Dead on the Water. No charisma on his playing. I DO get nervous about saying this because I can't even fathom Mangini. But that's what my ears tell me.

  • what about 6:00???????

  • someone likes octavarium

  • I walk beside you is basically a pop song, but I don't remember another pop song with such a good drumming

  • Not impressed by his double strokes, sorry. :(

  • are the full videos anywhere, too?

  • i really miss him in dt. =/

  • Mad Skills? These are mad skills: /watch?v=jKdScs6AgaY

  • Most average drummes can do this "great"hi-hat work!

  • @SuperBones6 And you obviously know this by your own experience? Portnoy is amazing and I don't think one of your "average drummers" could hold a candle next to Portnoy.

  • Does anybody else ever notice that the 2nd note in mike portnoys double strokes are weaker than the initial stroke? I know this is less of a problem in set drumming it's just a quirk I notice and I think is odd for a world class drummer that might overplay his songs by 10% or so. Still amazing work and worth watching.

  • @RythmFanatic Are you a marching percussionist, by chance? I played in drumline throughout high school and consistent double stroke heights is a big emphasis in marching percussion. I noticed it, too.

  • @fuzzypear123 Yes I did the high school thing for a while But I'm doing a wgi group and also SoA this year. So yes I am technically a rudimental drummer but I enjoy all forms of percussion i.e. set & mallets.

  • @RythmFanatic Respect! Who are you marching with this season?

  • @fuzzypear123 Hopefully Spirit of Atlanta, the callback camp is the 13th. of January

  • @RythmFanatic Right on, good luck, and have a fun season. :)

  • What Song???

  • Until now, Nicko Mcbrain was the only drummer i realy liked, but now ive added this guy to the list

  • Rock and Roll is here to stay!!! It pumps my gonads!!!

  • We need some Hero...

  • @snaredrum110 I assume that's why he's famous and you aren't... right?

  • "Actually he is the best drummer ever" Haha, it's probably true, but it just sounded like... ah, nvm.

  • Great drummer but he never learn his rudiments..... his double strock on the hi hat don't sound equal.....

  • @Sam555768 He's self taught. And it sounds great.

  • @Sam555768 he is buzzing them when playing fast...I agree not the best technique but I actually know a University that teaches this so...lol

  • @Sam555768 I think these kind of comments is mostly "I think I know something"... C'mon...:)

  • Comment removed

  • fuck these videos, just makes me sick knowing ill never come close to being that good lol

  • simply flawless..

  • Comment removed

  • WTF is this ? what is happening ? MY POINT is that i thin Mike MAGINIE`s aproach to the Dream Theater music is heavier then Portnoy`s. I DONT LIKE MAGINIES APROACH THAT MUCH. BUT both are world class drummers!!

  • Petrucci wrote the drum tracks for the new album ... Mangini has nothing to do but play and replace Portnoy. You cant leave your family forever .... I still wants to see musically speaking what Mangini can bring to DT. Next album maybe ?

  • @SmoothGTR33 Couldn't agree more. Mangini is a great drummer, but I want to see how drums composed by him will sound.

  • @SmoothGTR33 Actually, no, JP programmed them on some software, and Mangini just re-recorded them.

  • @SmoothGTR33 Portnoy can never be replaced... he is the best metal drummer ever!

  • @SmoothGTR33 Petrucci and Rudess Wrote drum track

  • @SmoothGTR33 Actually Petrucci did not write out drum tracks for Mangini to play note for note. Petrucci had ideas of drum patterns for certain riffs he had created and left Mangini room to bring in some of his own ideas for parts of the album. Basically, Mangini did not just play note for note what John or Jordan told him to play.

  • @SmoothGTR33 I like Portnoy's Tone MUCH MORE THAN MANGINI's

  • @SmoothGTR33 Mangini said that he was given free reins to play whatever he wanted, but he just played "what the others were playing, but on drums", which he does.

  • @Datasint Ya buts kinda the problem isnt it? He isnt really adding anything to the actual songs he plays. Thats what Mike Portnoy did, he influenced the songs with his style of drums, and for me thats wat makes Portnoy better than just amazing. Not doubting Mangini's talent just giving my opinion :)

  • @romski3737 I do agree with you, while Mangini is an amazing drummer, I prefer Portnoy's style of drumming. It's all about preference.

But on for example Build me up, break me down, Mangini really is doing something completely different than the rest of the band, and it really sounds amazing.

  • 7:50 is awesome

  • what kind of a stick holding is this....mangini is so much better no need to disgust.. bu jojo mayer can eat them alive :)

  • @emirsengezer There's not even a competition when Jojo is mentioned, he's on a different level. That's like a"Duh" moment.

  • You forgot Constant Motion!!

  • Best Drummer alive

  • @down2despair .....AAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...................Look, if he is your all time favorite, you look up to him, he's your biggest influence......Then thats all well and good..................but comments like yours are as silly as they sound........................and means you need to listen to "different' drummers.

  • @mikeybbdrummin that god damn suspensive points are fucking annoying, but it is more annoying ur "trolling", if u dont like MP please go to ur "different drummers" videos, ur trolling comments are more silly. Thank you

  • @DT2BLZ .........No trolling......Mike is a Great drummer and has done great things for DT....not my favorite drummer and not The Best Drummer Ever...................and I watch a lot of vids of different drummers......Nothing is as silly and uneducated about drumming as saying MP is the Best Drummer Ever...............he is great at what he does....thats about it.

  • @mikeybbdrummin What's wrong with liking a drummer....

  • @OneTakeJesus ...Absolutley nothing....I like some drummers and some I could listen to their drumming all day long..........Portnoy is a great drummer, his time signature vocabulary is incredible......I just think things like "the best drummer ever, the worlds best drummer and stuff are funny.....even if its about guys way better then MP.......I think one of the most skilled drummers ever is Steve Smith.....and it would be tough for me to say he's the worlds best.....but way closer then MP.

  • @mikeybbdrummin Then why are you making comments like this? Be positive about it. Who cares if somebody says he is the best. You don't need to get involved... Who cares? They are just saying that because they like him the most out of every other drummer. I'd say Dave Weckl is the best in my personal opinion. But Portnoy is definitely my favorite.

  • @OneTakeJesus ..You mean dont get involved like you are to a comment that was not directed at you?..Nice point.....anyway, IMO, which I will speak, is that there is a huge difference between favorites and "the best"...Gregg Bissonette is my favorite/biggest influence, but for me to say he is the worlds greatest would be a HUGE statement...............and saying The Best Drummer Ever is different than he's my favorite drummer....not the end of the world, but he should expect comments about it.

  • @mikeybbdrummin Well uhh.... Who cares? Not a big deal...

  • @OneTakeJesus Evidently you since you say who cares and jump in on something not directed towards you......Thats my guess.

  • those sticks look incredibly long and thin

  • It's actually very easy to play...But I like his orchestration, i mean HOW he uses drumkit. MP has his own style.

  • for a second i thought you were portnoy without beard...lol,,then i read the description...

  • portnoy n1...heavy?! please ...listen chaos...

  • wheres honor thy father? the verse rules!

  • this actually istn that hard its just portnoy that makes it seem so amazing.

  • I don't think DT became any more(or less) heavy with magini because just look at the Train of Thought album....only thing I WILL say about Magini is, that he didn't leave a mark on the new album in my opinion. He felt more like a stand in drummer vs a permanent drummer.

  • @terrence77477 he didnt leave his mark because he didnt write the drum parts, petrucci did, but what was written was amazingly inhuman and mangini pulled it off flawlessly, and does it live with ease, i cant wait for the next album when mangini has a lot more input on what goes on with the drumming, he had a little this last album, but like i said, petrucci wrote the drum parts with a drum machine and pretty much asked mangini "hey can you do this?"

  • these tricks must be the only things he has added to his repertoire during the years :) but this video is really interesting

  • i guess he's the best with the hi-hat, up till now, never seen anybody do it like he does. People try to emulate it but, that's bout it.

  • @Transferhell i would check carey's polirhytms first :D

  • Mike is a better drummer

  • Mike looks so weird without a beard :P

  • thanx, excellent...

maybe should by fine to finish every single samples lost to silent. I always start to "fly" in every sample and the hard end of one is litttle big shock. But I know - it´s technical document...

10:30 great cap. I want one. I must have one. :-)

  • are those triple strokes in These Walls?

  • is it only me, ore does it seams like DT have become more heavy with magini at the drums? ^^

  • @123LarsUlrich DUDE WHHAT THE FUCK?! seriously how can u even...you know what, nvm

  • @DT2BLZ I think so, and i don`t like it... My opinion....

  • @DT2BLZ i know what hes saying but i think they are the same. they'll always be good.

  • @DT2BLZ its okay dude, he has lars ulrich in his name...

  • @aki010 Hey, this user is old, and i hate Lars ^^ But how the fu ck do you change the name?

  • @DT2BLZ mangini was a wrong move for DT

  • @lengman2112 ...Mangini was the best move IMO....all the choices were great.....but Mangini went in w/the attitude of playing MP's parts to a T!....for the DT guys and forthe MP fans of future gigs that know and love MP's parts...you cant listen to the new cd and say he's not good or not creative, because we all know he played what was asked of him for the first cd....and Mangini seems humble as can be....not all seemed humble IMO....almost like DT was lucky to have them auditioning for thm.

  • @mikeybbdrummin i agree with what you're saying. I was a mangini fan prior to portnoy leaving the band. it just seems that the DT guys didnt try their best to keep things going with portnoy. i mean, all he wanted was some time off. I know they were growing in popularity, gaining exposure and didnt want to stop their momentum, but I feel Portnoy was absolutely vital in the whole DT machine. without him, they're going to turn into something they were always striving not to become.

  • @lengman2112 ......I dont see the DT guys making up MP's desire to take 5 years off.............I wouldnt do it if I enjoyed what I did and had one guy calling the shots.....It shit or get off the pot time t that point....And Mangini is a perfect fit playing wise and attitude and humbleness from what i can tell........Mp's "I only want to take a year or two off" ploy on That Metal Show?......I personally dont buy .....Mp realized hs mistake, thats why he wanted back in......Too little too late!
