  • thanks, i,m a djembe player i like this! The Nethelands

  • Hi, I am a djembe player and play traditional african rhythms of the Malinke culture. But it is wonderful to be able to groove to more dance and modern rhythms too. Love the way you teach. And I am able to follow your instructions quite easily. After catching the techniques of playing what you teach, I get hold of my favourite cds to match the rhythms and play together with the music. I love it...! Thanks for showing...!

  • hi, ur great, I am new to djembe and have always wanted to try it, i was at the guitar center to get one, that has sound like yours, but didn't find anything close to yours, could you plz tell me what kind of djembe are you using in these videos.thank s

  • These are not jembe techniques, nor is that a jembe, but you have a good ear and some good conga skills.

  • Is it 1e&a TWOe&a ThreeE&a Foure&a ?

  • Love this video, wonderfully taught. I was able to follow along and then slow it way down until I could play it consistently on my own in one sitting. Gonna check out all the rest of your videos. This was a blessing to me.

  • sick beat and good teacher!

  • Isn't that basic guanguanco rhythms? I play that on the conga's a little differently.

  • Is that a 24x10" Earth Remo Djembe? I'm 6'1 so I thought I should have a 14", but since I need about 24" in length, would you recommend it for a 6 footer? I just started playing guitar for church, but I was in love with drums for as far back as I can remember, but never got to play them. You can do a surprising amount with a djembe, however. Thank you for posting this

  • I was getting frustrated at all the Djembe videos. This was EXACTLY what I wanted to see. I played on a friends cheap tourist one once, and this is the closest to my style I think I will find on here. Now I think I know what type I am looking to get. Thank you very much

  • Beautiful instruction from a generous heart! Thank you.

    Michael Hinton

  • man your video is GREAT, just got a djembe and this is a very informative! thankyou!

  • this is one of the most versatile beats on a djembe. learn it and it can be used for endless applications! play around with accents and mutes. try putting a couple coins on the head of ur drum. makes a cool effect. Thanks shawn!

  • Your instructional videos are exceptional. Thank you for making them!

  • Muito bom, como percussionista, me sentia incompleto não tocando djembe, mas o cara aí manda super bem e estou malhando todos os dias os exercícios que ele posta aqui, parabéns e não deixe de postar nunca, eu faço muito proveito disso!

  • what size is your djembe ?

  • Thank you so much for that .I used to play with friends and has been years. I made a djembe and have been playing on my own trying to get feel for it again. You explained it wonderfully. piece

  • greate job. your stuff is very helpful.

  • Nice man, keep it up. That's tight.

  • Very good, thank you.

    Ignore the haters =)

    -B

  • VERY NICE!!!

  • you are a really good teacher. in just one day of practice, i already can do this, and the reggae rythm too!(although my hands hurt :P) Thanks from Portugal.

  • The open tones on this djembe sound clean. Mine has a clang ring sound. Did you do anything to yours to minimize that or do smaller drums have less ring to em? I have a 14'' Remo djembe fiberskyn 3

  • I like the 40 part! and a 40oz ony and a twoy wnd a tree and a 40oz!! great lesson

  • wow, its great sound is impressive!

do u have a certain calfskin or fiberglass material

    on that djembe?

  • what sort of djembe do u have?

  • remo

  • the drum sounds great!

  • Good Teacher we need more of YOU!!!

  • i know now what djembe i'm going to buy. you make the remo 10' sound realy nice. it has a sort of latin sound like a bongo/conga sound but it's a djembe. very versatile drum.

  • Remo are indeed a fine drum to get, I highly recomend them!

  • I use this type of rhythm in slow tunes with a little different style, I use my heal tip and harmonic tone in combination with a slap and it produces this simular rhythm as the one your demonstrating. Good job on yours!

  • 12x24 or 12x25 would be appropriate for your size, and is a more common middle of the road size.

  • Im 5 foot 6 inches tall. Could anyone please tell me what size Djembe would be appropriate for someone my height?

  • Versatile, precise, and an excellent teacher! Thank you!

  • I have that Taylor :)

  • thanks , love your style . Starting a Djembe circle in

Shawforth Lancashire....... We have nothing for the

youth so i am hoping it takes off.

  • Great sound! Who makes your Djembe? What would you recommend on buying?

  • some sort of singaporean?

  • Yo bro~ Great sounds ya got going on there :) Using them gifts to praise the Giver! SweetOo!!!

Ps. are you in the USA?

  • @seeinglight he sounds australian

  • I just wanted to say music is not mathematics...even though you can count in it. IMHO if it sounds good it doesn't matter how it's played. Just have fun and experiment a little :) btw this rhythm rocks! :) can't wait to get my djembe and learn it

  • one of the best demonstrations I've seen on youtube. thanks a ton.

  • hello kelvinjester,

i did mention it's not your traditional djembe. do me a favour, be less narrow minded ;)

  • nice Taylor Big Baby in the back ground.. great guitar... I think I might get a djembe... sounds great, and only around $60

  • Thank you.

  • Your videos are, hands down the best instructional videos on playing the djembe on the internet. Would you please tell me how you miked it ? I have had so much trouble with the separation of ow and high end. yours is dramatic.

I have had some success mounting a vocal akg mike into the bottom of the same djembe you have. Thank you peace/b/w/u

  • wow, thank you for your encouragement!

i mike the top skin, that's all. there was audio post done, so what you're hearing was tweaked. miking the bottom gives you the oomph, but if you'd like the "crack" and finger movements to be captured, the top would be essential.

  • dont listen to all the athiest hater that rate u on 1 poor keep on dude

  • my mom showed me your videos on playing christian music on the djembe and you are really good. i am going to be playing for my church soon so ill keep practicing thanx a ton

  • Nice little rhythm man, first thing iv learnt on my new djembe, cheers!

  • hey man. good vid. nice quality and very professional! i just got one question. what djembe do u use?

  • hi joshuag94,

    i'm using a remo 10", fibreglass / fibreskyn :)

  • wow thanks so much!! i play in my worship team!!! and its always nice to learn new things..... shalom and may yeshua bless you!!!

  • That is Tumbao, just morphed on a djembe.

  • Well done high quality video.

  • This is the 2nd video of yours that I have watched. I just subscribed and I am going to check out your blogspot page. Take Care, Great Job and Great Sound, that would be a good video to make. "Getting good sound , miking a drum and voice on a video". Joseph W., Cape Cod, MA, USA

  • hey waterrabbit,

that's a good suggestion. perhaps "tuning and miking your djembe" for a start...

  • wow excellent man thanks for turning me on to hand drums

  • look forward to your hand drum videos!

  • thats a fiberglass drum right ?

  • hi xhellabentx,

    you're right :)

  • that drum sounds great

  • quechino gato,e

  • Really great man. It's a good thing you are doing. Thanks for your time.

  • ive noticed in here you only slap twice,,,but in your song u slap the drum about 4-5 times. 'ish' lol

  • Hey man, thx a lot for this vid and rhytm ... I brought an Ashiko and Im playing this and is very very good :D

    Regards from Argentina!

  • great vid! what kind/brand of djembe is that??

  • gameon15,

it's remo's fibreglass djembe, with synthetic skin :)

  • your the most amazing teacher. thanks sooo much

  • can you post to me how u play this?? like in words. thanks

  • you are amazing! thank you so much for your videos! they really bless me and may you be blessed all the more. God bless you brother :D

  • thank you thank you thank you.

    excellent video, and perfectly taught!

  • Great, fun rhythm! Basic structure is something like this - right?:

    B t t t C t t t H t H t C t t t

(where B is bass, C is closed harmonic, H is harmonic and t is touch)

  • hi,

    it's more of like

B ttt C ttH tttt Cttt

    have more fun!

  • Thanks!

This corresponded well with what's played at the start of the video. But from 3:37 it seems like two harmonic tones are used.

  • ah yes!

    i did use two...variation :)

  • It is a little bit confusing, because when you take it apart, you have H t H t @3:45

  • Thank you so much .....

  • Your tutorials are Awesome! I never thought I could pick up the djembe so fast! I'm excited to use this in my small group. Thanks so much!

  • hey janderberg, glad they're of help.

    help spread the knowledge!

  • by far the best djembe instruction i've seen on youtube!!!

  • fantastic djembe! :D
