When they asked Michelangelo how he made his statue of David, he is reported to have said, "It is easy. You just chip away the stone that doesn't look like David."
I read McKee's book a number of years ago, in fact, I've read probably every book out there on screenwriting. Well earlier this I began taking the course offered through Reelwriting and it is so mind opening. The approach is so unique that it allows you take any idea and transform it into a screenplay - with clarity. McKee says lots of "right" stuff, but Mitchell German really does show you how to "do it".
Certainly, ideas, characters, settings, problems, needs, wants, desires, and plans will come to mind.
However, I believe that the more a story persists in one's mind is not solely their own story. It is that of the collective conscious. And, for one reason or another, it wants to be told.
This is why we have the almighty "Non-Disclosure Agreements." Because, one idea for a story will spread like wild fire-- at the same time.
Basically, if you don't write your story; someone else will! BetOnIt
Once a writer gets an idea for a story and develop the characters they might as well sit down and write it out because a good story stays on your mind. And the longer you ignore it the more persistent it becomes. So give in, go towards the light, get it done already!
