@noneyageorge85 you need to group the units you want by selecting the units and pressing the 'group' icon with three flags on it and then the formations icon which is the circle with the picture of the three art horse and inf on it :) hope it helps if confused just say

but if the cav isnt anywere near the squire (soz for speling xD) formation and the enemy inf is very near if u had those guys in lines u had more fire power ..... so this propobly only works if ur enemy is an idiot .... because no1 would atack a squere formation whit cav ... (except if ur an idiot) :))

@only1fullmetal square formation is the standard infantry formation when getting ready to recieve a cavalary charge. Line infantry will suffer heavy losses and rout without being in a square if they recieve a cavalary charge. Although slightly out of context this will give you an idea search for : Battl eof Waterloo French Cavalry Charge

Here's a random suggestion no offense but you click attack like 50 times for the same target it kinda is anoying, BUT great vid, all I do is take defensive positions on hills or in the corners of the maps lol

Against the cpu i just make a big line of infantry with my artillery in the middle. Behind the artillery I keep a unit of grenadiers just in case. Cavalry at the flanks. But against a human opponent this tactic will fail miserably probably.

Janissaries where Christian boys who were taken from their homes forcefully, converted to Islam and trained as Turkish warriors. yeah you can but i think if you play online you can only do it on the "late" setting rather than early, you have to research it for campaign :)

That's fire by rank, and it works up to 3 lines.

Fire and advance has one line fire, then move up. Then the next line fires and moves up.

its not really a formation, but more of a strategy\tactic. In the game its called fire by rank. like you said one line shoot crouches and the second line fires. You have to research it in campaign mode for youre units to use it.

no i read it somewhere..it doesnt give any strength..really why would a triangle do more damage than a square..compare it with a spear and a hammer..now horses dont slice through units..so why not use a square..i dont think you get my point but oh well..

It doesnt give it more strength but it focuses a large number of troops against a small area which means that you're more likely to break their ranks, if you wanted to get troops their with minimal losses you'd send a thin line ahead to get them to empty their muskets. and besides you cant qoute something if you dont know where it's from. oh well ...

no i read it in rome total war it the same kind of idea charging in with cavalry and you can select help and the guy will tell you about wedge formation..and besides..if you make a gap in the enemy unit.they will surround you and kill your horses with bayonets.. doesn't make any sence

but you've broken their line, demoralised their troops and horse men usually have swords. oh and in reply to your comment about horses not cutting, swords and lances do.

When you play group all your units, (the icon with 3 flags) and then An icon of artillery, cavalry, and Infantry will show up.

Then you click on that icon with the 3 units and the list of formation should pop up! :)

Less fire than standard and slight movement forward. However I think you get a better chance to evade shots since they are in a loose formation but the loss of firepower is not worth it.

This is a really good tactic for Russia. Send in some cav followed by hand mortars. Usually the enemy will form squares and then your mortar infantry pick them off really fast
