my guess is they were trying to blend in with the TV's. I remember we had this giant box TV with a giant wooden frame.

I like the wood decor. Much more pleasant than the various plastics everything else uses.

I had an Intellivision of some kind growing up, but it had a joystick instead of a disk. I still don't know what it was beyond some kind of Intellivision.

I was born in 84, so I'm really just guessing, but I'd say that the whole wood style craze was just a fad.

The wood finish of the 80's, was mainly due to trends of the time.Lots of house decor at the time,featured wooden effect wallpapers,and plywood wall panels were in vogue too.
