Anybody who says Chicago losing the bid was a "bitchslap" towards Obama is only saying what he/she *wants* to believe. Obama is much more popular outside the US than he is domestically, and certainly much more popular than Bush. Chicago lost because it just lost. It had nothing to do with whoever was endorsing its bid. There were plenty famous people endorsing ALL the bids. There were four candidates for 2016...only one of them was going to win.

SLC was great games, but it's true they bribed IOC members, which they didnt need to do bc they had a strong chance of winning. It's suspected -but never proven- Atlanta bribed as well. Atlanta's games were a disaster, the worst in recent history; let alone that prior to winning the '96 bid, no one outside the US had ever heard of Atlanta; not having a globally-recognized name counts against you for the summer games . LA only won the '84 bid bc no one else bid for that year.

Flavelas in Rio are about 100x worse than any "ghetto" in Chicago my friend. Rio's drug trade per capital is enormous in comparison as well. If it wasn't for the beautiful beaches and tourist venues Rio would be a horrible choice for the Olympics.

Besides if avoiding places with high crime was the goal then Tokyo should have won by a landslide. I'm happy Rio won. They need the jobs and markets more than any other city on that list.

I wouldn't call Chicago a laughing stock. It's a global city that's widely-respected around the world. Chicago didn't lose the 2016...the *USA* lost 2016. We've hosted 8 games total (4 summer, 4 winter), with Atlanta '96 & Salt Lake '02 still fresh in everyone's memory. If anything, Atlanta ruined Chi's and NYC's chances of landing the 2012 or 2016 games. Atlanta was a city no one outside the USA had ever heard of, the '96 games were a disaster, and 1996 is still too recent.
