"Chicken"? -The word has a special definition in gay-lingo,& probably had the same meaning in the '60s too,& it's certainly not the same meaning as "chick". Besides his brave determination to be himself,appearance-wise,onstage,don 't tell me Jackie was making coded sex confessions to the audience too! But it's hard not to admire him, not just for his obvious talent, but for his unapologetic, unstifled expression of himself as he was, unafraid to challenge early '60s
I went to the Sapphire when I was underage, too much make-up and fake id to see Jackie Shane, I had all of his music on 45's, I still love him wish he was still around to give us first class entertainment
Another example of how RnB was back then. The rawness only helped the talent shine through. The fancy equipment of today only masks the lack of talent and energy of modern artists. Just listen to Jackie and you'll realize he didn't need any of that to thrill his audiences.

Great stuff!
Sounds like Jackie had quite the following in the 60's.
