I still get blown away from this performance. Again, so glad I was there for it live. This is what music is. It's a feeling. It would be impeccable if she was feature on a studio recording of this track. So much soul.
I watch this video every time I need a little pick-me-up... such gorgeous voices and such joy in just making music together. Thanks for the recording, and thanks to the Swell Season and Moji for the tremendous rendition. :)
hey everyone! Moji here from the video, and I wanted to let any Houston people know that my band will be playing at Warehouse Live, March 11th- doors at 6:30pm. check out WarehouseLive(dot)com for more info!
It seems like many of reditions of this go by the name "High Hope." I am not sure if this the name of the song, but until we learn otherwise, it would be great to retitle this so people can find this one in the mix.
Thanks for the info. I've updated the title to include the name of the song. I also just got the latest Swell Season email list newsletter and they had a link to this video in it so I have a feeling the view count is going to jump a bit very soon.
Moji! Love it. Do you have a website...where can we get some of your stuff. That is awesome and very real...it must have been so cool for you! You and Glen can belt it out. Sending good vibes from Buffalo NY!
Hey Chuck! Moji here, from the show. Thanks for posting the video! it was great proof that i didn't dream the whole thing up. I appreciate the compliments and have to say it was by far the best night of my life, a great way to celebrate having turned 25 the night before!
Don't know if this is appropriate or not, but my band is playing a show at Rudyards 2010 Waugh Dr. Thurs. Dec. 3 doors at 9pm.
Hi Moji! You're very welcome. I think each one of us felt like we were up on stage with you that night. As amazing as it was to watch, I can only imagine how it must have felt for you. You definitely earned it and certainly made the most of the opportunity! Thanks for adding some magic to an already special show. And by all means, feel free to promote your shows here anytime. I may even head down for one someday.
Read my comments to the right of the video. She sings in a band in Houston. She was part of the audience with the rest of us and Glen invited her onstage when he heard her singing.
@harapan77 Marketa was heard singing "Stars, stars" for the first time by Glen during garden party in her parents home. the next day she sang @ a stage with "The Frames"; the rest of the story you know :)
Ever since the concert, I check the videos to see what other clips of this concert are up and I still gravitate towards this epic moment. I keep trying to ground myself and say "it's like this at every show" but for some reason, I also defend myself by saying that I was lucky enough to be a part of this greatness of a night. Not to mention that they aren't an American band makes it that much more spectacular. A rare moment to have, especially in Houston. So great.
this was the single greatest thing i have ever seen in a concert. (twenty some years of attending) absolutely transformative. it was a privilege to be there. the entire show was amazing. the greatest show i have ever seen it.
This was the best part of the best encore I have ever seen in concert. Moji rocked. However, Swell Season did a great job letting her do her thing and playing around her too. The sounds worked really well together. It should be recorded. I want to buy it.
My camera sucks in comparison to the quality of everyone else's videos. I'm not even going to bother uploading them. I too stared mesmorized at the magic that was happening in front of me. So glad that you caught this moment!!! :) Wonderful. The crowd was going crazy, what a moment in this young woman's life!
Someone behind me said "She's a plant" but The Swell Season don't strike me as the type of band to do something gimicky like that. There are a couple of spots where Moji sounds like she starts to sing something but the chords change up a bit and she recovers masterfully, a true sign of an experienced improviser. She has great musical instincts and seems comfortable on stage. But the parts where she gushes about TSS and hides her face in her hands and screams "Oh my god!" You can't fake that.
@chuckpadgettmusic Trust me she was no plant. I've been to quite a few concerts and I've cruise YouTube almost daily for the past 2 years. Occasionally things like this happen. Glen's very much a people person and understand of music unites us all.
Oh, I know. I'm almost sure that the person behind me said that she was a plant in jest because it was so good. The stars just sort of aligned that night: Great band + tremendous audience (one of the best I've been a part of) + an incredibly talented audience member + having my camera ready to go = magic. On top of that, I barely made the show. My flight from Charlotte was 3 hours delayed and I missed the opening act. Got there about 15 minutes before The Swell Season started!
I wasn't thinking it was staged. It was unbelievably good. I could definitely tell she's a performer, even if an amateur undiscovered one...it takes years of performance to know how to work voice levels and mike equipment and stuff. It was great, and yes there were definitely times were she seemed a little off. It was imperfectly perfect :) Great moment of my life as well! It's totally brillant to say womanatwittsend, the beautiful story of once - the love of music unites us all.
My feeling was that by sheer luck I was able to capture a moment that moves you much in the same way the film Once does. I can only take credit for having the foresight to know that it was going to be special and maybe a little for the cinematography. ;^)
I met Moji a couple years back at ACL and had NO idea she had a pair of lungs like that. She's a great singer (obviously) and an even greater person - couldn't be happier for her!
Glad I found this! much better quality than mine, The swell season live in Houston. Anyway to get a copy of the whole show!??? That was such a great show!!
I didn't record the whole show, just 4 or 5 songs. The rest of the time I was just standing there mesmerized, taking the occasional picture. I saw a LOT of cameras that night so I wouldn't be surprised if someone shot the entire show. If not, I would think that the entire show might be pieced together from various sources. I'll upload what I have in the next few days but I had to upload this clip immediately.
moji gives this song such a good uplifting feeling. if u heard glen perform it on npr on point it's not as uplifting and this is just brilliant. so good!
I was thinking that they need to get her into a studio and record this track with her on it. If I ever decide to do a cover of Pink Floyd's "Great Gig In The Sky," I know who I'm going to call to do the vocal!
wow! that looked fucking fantastic! Where's the video for the song after it tho! Haha It sounded like a song i can't get off the tip of my tongue! i know it tho! aggg! So awesome tho! thanks for the awesome recording!!!
I had to leave halfway through the next song as I had to walk about 10 blocks to grab the last bus to the airport so I could catch the first flight out the next morning. Was very glad that this song was before the time I had to leave. Did they play anything after that next song? I hope not. I hated that I had to leave.
I saw Swell Season at Stubbs and later at the Paramount after they won the Oscar for Fallling Slowly. This show was the best yet, and Moji's add lib was incredible. What a fabulous time and moving moment.
Believe it or not, it was shot with a Panasonic LUMIX digital camera (DMC-LZ8) with 5X zoom. This camera has really impressed me with its video quality. The only drawback is that once you start shooting a video the zoom can't be adjusted. All my concert videos (except for The Egg) have been shot using this camera.
Man, this part was amazing. His back and forth with a sometimes rowdy Texas crowd was entertaining and handled well. Yes best show I've seen in my 15 years of concert-going. I'm so glad I got to witness this. Also found Moji's band on myspace look them up!
I'm glad I picked Houston from the list of cities on their tour to attend. My first concert in Texas and it did make for some witty banter on Glen's part. Thanks for the tip on Moji's myspace page. I'll add that info in the description and hopefully send a little traffic her way.
I was at this concert and this had to have been swell season's best US performance ever. I don't know how they could top it, honestly. Best concert I've ever been to in my 10 years of concert-going. Brilliant. Thanks for posting this video :)
You're welcome. I've logged 29 years of concert-going myself and this was definitely one of the coolest moments I've witnessed. I had a feeling it would be.
My bad. I was wondering how anyone could possibly NOT think this was awesome, badass and unbelievable! Guess it's kind of like when Glen was talking to the person in the audience who said "Shut up!" and he asked them whether they meant it in a good way or a bad way.
This video still makes me smile. Stumbled across it again -- love it!!! Wonder what Moji's up to?
