Hi, If you are familiar with Eric's you'll know that he won't do a "cover". He always puts his own spin on it. If you want the original, you'll have to go to the Byrds or Dylan himself.
@kaymo211 would you believe he is my mentor, and close personal friend? i'm sure he would be very happy to know he is still recognized. thanks for the kind words brotha.
I didn't really like this song but the lyrics were great, however, I just checked out Bob Dylans version, and it's crap. This one is the boss compared to that one.
@aIbertfataIbert Eric johns is genius, I found his work about 10 years ago with "Tones" & "Ah Via Musicon", and it just blowed my mind :) The best version I ever heard of this song althoug is from Carl Verheyen, another great compositor/guitarrist. Look out. ;)
tone sounds good, i hope he uses some of his older tones on his new album. this sounds more raw than his "bloom" tone, so hopefully he's goin back to using some of his 100 watt marshalls, instead of those 50 watts. they sound good, but you can't beat the early 70's and 80's tone he had.
Ya, i kind of dig the end of the 80's and early 90's tone.
He still uses 100 watts frequently at shows, Its probably going to be the same tone on the new record because he's using different pedals and devices now-a-days than he did 10-20 years ago.
Hey videoeyes! Thanks for the kind words. This was filmed at Eric's Lake Tahoe concert earlier this year. I'm glad you enjoyed it, Eric was great that night.
Wow, great video lanecam1. Great audio and perfect one camera coverage. Was this from the recent Hendricks tour?
"...version sucked??" I guess robibm2003 didn't buy the Bloom album. It's EJ's version, and it's all in the tones he uses, a far cry from the Byrds though. After listening to it a few times, it really gets into one's head. A big thanks for posting. It's a great live version.
Eric is naturally very creative. I don't think you will ever hear him do a cover that sounds anything like the original version. He has his own voice, I dig it, and so did the audience!
Eric Johnson is a hell of a guitar player, but this frankly sucked. Maybe it's because I am so used to the Byrds version, but this didn't come close to working.
...oh yes, takes me back to thoughts of Bill Nelson....

He's a great guitarist but this sucks...to quote a former post (I couldn't put it any better), "horrible interpretation of a great song"...

very good video! but is it true that this is a cover?
DarthAyreon 2 years ago
Yes, it is a cover of a song written by Bob Dylan also covered by the Byrds.

Yes, its a Bob Dylan. You will find that Dylan's version doesn't sound anything like this :)

Wish he'd release Tears Of A Clown. Tommy Taylor used to sing it & it was very cool...

Probably because you're used to other versions. With the exception his Hendrix covers, he normally does them his way. I tend to like them.
