Therefore I prefer Anette's interpretation, because I feel she does sing it with emotion. You have to give credit to Anette, for trying her absolute hardest to sing this incredibly difficult song. Nothing will transform Anette to Tarja, and quite frankly, I think it would be stupid to even try.

Regarding your friend, I don't know what "pitchy" means from a musical POV (I am not even English speaking...). If by that he meant that she went "sharp", like singing C4# instead of C4, it's off key.
However when Anette goes off key she does it big time, not with a semitone :)

In the link you gave, even the very first note is wrong. As I have said she can't sing it in the original key so every note is different. It would be OK if the structure would be kept.
But it's not. She sings falsly. Random example: in 3:06 - 3:16 almost every note is off key and she's straining like being on death bed.
I'm not a Anette hater, in fact I love her voice and even some old song versions of her but not this one. The old version is perfect and this sounds weird to me. I don't even like Tarja's 2005 version. :/

I can't fault her singing, but at the same time, this song was built to show off the vocal skills and range of Tarja. All the same, the changes they made to the song to fit it to Annette were very well done.

i think this is the one of the best song she sings, she managed to show sweet emotions through the performance and stopped doing that screamfest that she does out of a sudden sometimes, i like annete a lot, and i'm happy to see her improving and that she delivered such a great performance.
I just watched a video of Tarja singing this and wept about how Anette couldn't quite pull this song off... then I watched this and MY we're I proved wrong! She absolutely pwned the song, I regret ever doubting her! She even managed the high notes in the last chorus (one of them anyway), I didn't think she'd make it but wow, this is great!

@RawrItsJuul Actually wikipedia says that its elements are borrowed either from classical music or progressive rock, but as far as vocals are concerned, the most common is operatic vocals from the mezzo-soprano range. I understand that e.g Sharon from WithinTemptation hasn't exactly the same range, but anyway, I believe the combination with Tarja's voice was the ideal.

I have to admit that Annette here is not bad at all, but there are many better singers around, and especially singers who can sing the nightwish' songs in their real tonality. That's my opinion

You have no logic.
- "same pitch" - Tarja has one of the greatest range from all singers in activity today, spreading between 3 and 4 octaves in LIVE performances.
A normal soprano has about 2/2 and a half octaves, and Anette controls about one.
- She is classically trained but that has nothing to do with opera, The fact that you confuse the 2 terms shows severe lack of culture.
She does sing opera arias at certain events and she does it magnificently.

Regarding your friend, I don't know what "pitchy" means from a musical POV (I am not even English speaking...). If by that he meant that she went "sharp", like singing C4# instead of C4, it's off key.

In the link you gave, even the very first note is wrong. As I have said she can't sing it in the original key so every note is different. It would be OK if the structure would be kept.
But it's not. She sings falsly. Random example: in 3:06 - 3:16 almost every note is off key and she's straining like being on death bed.

I just watched a video of Tarja singing this and wept about how Anette couldn't quite pull this song off... then I watched this and MY we're I proved wrong! She absolutely pwned the song, I regret ever doubting her! She even managed the high notes in the last chorus (one of them anyway), I didn't think she'd make it but wow, this is great!

I understand that e.g Sharon from WithinTemptation hasn't exactly the same range, but anyway, I believe the combination with Tarja's voice was the ideal.

I kind of pity Anette, because she's replacing such a huge singer as Tarja, that's got to be difficult, I couldn't do it. I think she's doing a great job singing songs that aren't even rewritten for her voice.
