I served on the USS Turner Joy, TDY, a couple of years after this incident and some of the crew that were there in Aug. 4th were still there. NO ONE believed that they were attacked on that day. However, the N. Vietnamese Komar missle boats were surely powerful enough to have sunk both destroyers if they had tried. They are basically PT boats with two large anti-ship missles mounted on each gunnel.

Actually they were provocing the hell out of them with CIA organized raids against NVA coastal installations that the Maddox was supporting. That's why they expected an attack. But those sly communists didn't rise to the bait. No problem! LBJ & the Big Mac just declared an attack anyway.
