He was a genuine superstar and a part of the brilliant Walker Brothers. Much as I admire his early work, the later stuff leaves me cold. A true waste of his talent.
MrLawman calls his later solo albums trash. I also miss the romantic and lyrical Scott, but I think he simply went beyond general popmusic-based comprehension. Which is his right, as an artist. While not easy and not really pleasant to hear, he deserves respect for these daring musical ideas. He certainly gets it from other pop artist collegues, so he must be doing something good. Maybe in another 10-50 years, he will be named alongside John Cage and Philip Glass.
I am a Walker Brothers fan from the very beginning (1965). With the years I was able to collect all their recordings, records, live, rasreties, very rareties, etc. Is till live in the Netherlands but planning to move to South America. Therefor I offer my whole collection (ONLY THE RECORDS VINYL). Cannot take them all with me.
Just want to say how sorry I was to hear of Johns passing. I was in New Zealand & unfortunately he left us on my birthday. I know, Scott, you won't probably see this but if you do........x
I don't think Scott subscribes to beauty as being "pretty" or "enjoyable" but he finds that beauty now in the breaking of hearts. Yes. His stuff since 1995 is like open-heart surgery. Painful, but if the heart is very sick, then necessary.
Compassion is the ability to merge the "collective" heart of humanity with your own. I'm not saying he's doing this intentionally. I'm saying he can't help it. And when you see how pained he is, and talks of wanting to move on, I think that's apparent.
It's a refreshing change to come across an artist who seems to be so level and genuine. I remember the Walker Bros. well from the 60s - my sister (who was 14 and hopelessly in love with Scott) dragged me to one of their gigs when they were playing in our city, and I was absolutely blown over by the singing talent of this guy. John & Gary, not so much, but they made up a nice little trio. I wonder if they ever meet up and jam these days.
I don't quite understand his music (my fault) but Scott Walker's interview is filled with his personal integrity and is one of the most refreshingly genuine and honest interview I have listened to. Today's artists have so much to learn from him. Bravo !
@zarathustra1077 It's just the melody that's hard for me to understand. I fully appreciate what he is trying to say though. I think Jarvis Cocker said it well in the interview " He was definitely painting pictures within your mind but not in a cliche way" . Having said that, I just admire his clarity of thought and his honesty so much. As gabe25591 said ... very dignified, even when in the face of commercial disappointment. Wonderful example of a human being.
@Chomuno old and ugly??? you must live surrounded by beautiful people if you think that,, he looks wonderful for his age, I came face to face with him at the Barbican shows, and he has the most fantastic skin,,,, wonder what cream he uses lol.. seriously,, he looks just amazing for his age
But he went to inspiring music lovers to inspiring artists to inspiring composers... and forgot about his early music fans. but you gotta still love him
I find Scott Walker inspiring. He survived all the roumours of being a burnt-out case, but here he is, entirely sane and intelligent, doing exactly what he wants to do artistically. Go, Scott!
you could not find anything to eat on the road in USA, fk, what about UK....Bangers and Mash everywhere:-)))))))))) So not long after his first two successful albums he lost himself up his own asshole...co no one wa sinterested in the obscure trash he produced......Eeryone remembers Scott Walker for his early music not the junk he did later including recent trash.:-)
Great to see Scott again after many years.I Have many happy memories from my teens. What a gentleman in every sense of the word, I hope it is not another 10 years before we hear from him again
He looks like Spock with the way his ears stick out, but hell, it's been 40-some-odd years. As long as the man is happy with his life and career, more power to him.
For someone in his late sixties, he has aged very well. People who have a problem with age, may soon be taking to the bottle daily. They will be unable to cope with looking in the mirror, realizing that they are no longer youthful. Life happens. That includes aging, unless the alternative looks good. His voice is still magic.
God - I didn't see this. I cringe when I hear clueless interviewers saying things like "recluse" to his face. I'm scared he won't do an interview again after he faces yet more banal questions. I'm amazed that he humoured her. He is still charming. I almost expect his eyes to have gone completely black after creating "The Drift" like some demon!. Seriously though, it is singularly amazing piece of work - truly stunning.

Right you are mababaki. In a sense Walker is better on 'The Drift' than ever before. Judging him by his looks is idiotic and sadly typical of our age. A musician isn't pretty so therefore his or her music isn't worthwhile?
He says he'd like to get out the next record before ten years pass. It's been about four, I wonder how he's doing with it.
I don't expect that any sort of updates will come out, since he's so private.
But for most of us, there's enough Scott Walker music to figure out already. I'm sure some people might be working at getting into The Drift. It's not like some music that's in one ear, out the other, and you have the melody in your head for a few days.
Yes -- the 60th were a main decade of wind of change.
Music was the tool - it's nice to see our great musicians like Walker, Bowie and the others in today's vids - they got older but their music is ageless and true!
@gabe25591 i could'nt agree more...so many 3rd rate knowbodies around propping up on any TV show, particularly children in need,,a great charity spoilt by the coverage and participation of so called guests.... Anyone desribed as comedy royalty is past it,,,Vic and Bob....the establishment BBC love them because they are tame....
this is all material from 30 century man...is somebody doing a show just by putting a comment on other people's documentary? so 30 century man is still the only video material about Scott in the last years I've found...
Very sloppy piece! So Brel was French not Belgian. Scott 'disappeared' in the late 60's and didn't resurface until Climate of THE (sic) Hunter and therefore didn't really make No Regrets and the brilliant Nightflights albums with his 'brothers'. Not being precious but he deserves a lot more respect.
Genius. One of very few around at this time; still pushing things, and out there, genuinely so.
Sharp interviews Walker likes it's Smash Hits. What a poor excuse of an arts programme The Culture Show is; and saying Brel was French when he was Belgian! Hilariously bad research - shameful! The Drift is ill-served by this show. Compare the last Walker LP, Tilt, and it being featured on the infinitely superior, The Late Show.
cool thanks! i saw his first four albums all on re-issued vinyl stacked in a row at a downtown record store in Montreal last week but I didn't have the $!!!
@Ze18613 Agreed...Personally, I think anyone interested in Scott Walker should just start with Scott one, Scott 2, Scott 3 and 4...just work your way up (Tho, I love the Walker Bros. Stuff too, so you could start there as well) but generally, I think that's the best way to approach Scott Walker-if you can't handle or dig Scott 4 then don't even think of getting any of his later work, because you'll prolly hate it!
@happykilojoule My suggestion would be that you get the first four albums he released solo instead. It's the more expensive way to go but it is worth it for sure. I went with "Boy Child" first and found that having all four albums was better. Just a friendly recommendation.
Thanks so much for this! He looks so much more at ease now speaking about himself and his music; it's like he's finally found a glimpse of what he's been loooking for for the past 45 years and it has given him some inner peace at last.
Anyway, I don't think anyone could ever claim to 'get' him, he's just on another level. The best description I've ever heard of him was here on YouTube: 'he's been to the future and is trying to tell us about it'.

Not to beat up further on you, Chomuno, but I did wince at your comment.
Look, on one level, it's sad- part of the sadness of this life- that his beauty, the beauty he possessed in his twenties, is gone.
But is he ugly? Hardly. I mean, does one find it hard to look at him? I really don't think you do.
As a couple of people said here, he actually has aged well.
So, I guess, I'm saying, mourn the demise of youthful beauty, but don't think of people as they age as as the living dead.
